Of course not, it depends of the lens. In this case, this is the lens of the small action camera Yi 4K which has a wide angle lens of 155 degrees with distortion. This do not necessary means it is a cheap lens even if it is really but it shows a very clear example of what not to do.

In the category of the wide angle lens, there are lens with minimal distortion. This meaning a straight line will stay straight and will not curve. The other category is the fish eye. This kind of lens is not interesting for us because this kind of lens like to create artistic curves.
I have never tried a tilt and shift lens but I often use a wide angle lens with minimal distortion and what is also interesting with that lens is that you can be very close to the subject. Here is an example: the camera was at the opposite of the gallery but stuck on it.

first photo :  2 photos of a 74 guns at 1/24 scale, the only difference is the date: 1 photos is dated 2008 and one 2019.

second photo: did I really shaped the closest deck beam  with a circle arc so big?  Not really, it is  a lens deformation because  the lens is too close to the deck beam.

At first sight, having  to choose a very good knife  for model ship making is a very easy thing, at least, this is what I thought when I bought my first Exacto. In the last months,  I learned that this subject is much larger. The shape of the handle, the kind of steel + carbon, the profile of the blade, just to name a few. In addition to this, sharpening is another domain difficult to master from water stones to leather. In fact, it is a good thing I shared my thoughts on this forum because Vossiewulf helped me a lot to understand what is a good knife and what is a good blade made of. This week, to put the cherry on the sundae, I received a very beautiful gift; 1 knife from North Bay forge, and another one made by the master himself. There are a lot of interesting features like aniline dye to enhance the color of wood, the finish is CA glue. Who could have thing to this? surely not me. the choice of steel for the blade and to top  all this the knife is balance.

First try in another subject with an action camera; a small camera, go pro style. I had 3 small webcam but I realized that they worked only with Windows 7. This kind of camera is mainly use for video, but it can take photos also. It is about 1,5 by 2,5inches. The fun thing is that it will be easy to insert it in the entrails of the model ship, also we can see what is the camera is seeing through the phone.

What will be the next step? Every time I take a photo inside the model ship, it is difficult to level the camera, so the next thing I will try will be a 3 axis gimbal stabilizer. This little gadget can automatically align the camera in the 3 axis.

Moldings around pillars  are cut at 45 degrees with my favorite knife, not with the saw.

Glued  most parts except the rail where the deck beams will rest. These rails must be still removable to  be able to cut notches for  the deck beams from the first deck later.
Half frames rest on these rails and to glue the half  frames , a spacer is added under the rails  so that the half frame can be glued somewhere.

Also the setup to take photos is now completed with a new tv. This way, it is very easy to observe very closely construction details photos

2019, the beginning of the construction inside the model ship.

First part,   planks to support the deck beams, very easy to position; the height in reference with the gun port openings  is the same everywhere.
    Followed by 7 inner  frames.
Still other parts to do before to fix everything.

    USING A FLASH OR NOT?

Last week, a man, in an exhibition, was saying that he was always using a flash in manual mode, never in TTL (true the lens).  Many years ago, it was true. Todays flash are much more performing.

Here is another common belief : a studio flash is much more performing than  a flash on a camera. With the development of the electronic technology; you can buy a flash  which fits on the camera hot shoe and it can perform in TTL as good as in manual. This week, I got a new on camera flash and I am very please by his performance.

On the last 2 photos, untouched, show the result of this morning test : The first one : with a flash in TTL mode, 100% automatic. The last one : no flash, neon lighting. The color are not as much appealing!

To build a model ship has  in a way, similar procedures used  in the industry: one of these is: INSPECTION.

The first step is done by eye but when the ye is not able anymore to discern the imperfections, we need to magnify the details to better understand where  further work will be required for a better result. The easiest way to concentrate on the model ship exclusively is to take photos. A camera is ruthless, she does not forgive mistakes and shows them. Sometime it is even difficult to accept the thuth in front of us.

Actually I am sanding the arch of the model ship. When I do not see any more details to ''sand'', I take few photos which will easily reveal where the corrections are needed. Fortunately, a day will come where no more modifications will be require. I can still see some spots which need to refine the curves. That will be the next step.

5 posts pass through the taffrail.
The angle for the piercing is determined by tracing the angle on a block set on the vice as  seen on the second photo.

    My last Experience: Focus Stacking

When focus is done on an object, the focus is done at an exact distance. This depth of field is  very limited especially with large opening like F4 by example.
There is a way to increase that depth of field: in manual focus, take a photo, readjust focus 1 clic or 2  forward, take a photo and 4-5 times like this.
In photoshop, you open these photos  a pile  and merge them in one photo.

In the example, the result will show a greater depth of field than F22  could give.

Few years ago when I decided to try cherry  wood instead of pearwood, it was not clear if
this wood was suitable for the task. In Europe, pear wood is a common tree, in Canada, pear wood is very expensive, but cherry wood is very much affordable. Workability of pear and cherry woods are very similar. For planking, pear wood is often use but it has no grain pattern. At the opposite, cherry wood has many grain patterns but not all of them are suited for the task, especially when the grain runs perpendicular to the length of the plank.

If we understand this  simple rule : ‘’The grain pattern must runs parallel to the length of the plank’’,  then I believe that cherry wood can be a good choice for the model ship builders.

    Hi Ron, yes I saw these but opted for Canon MP-E 65 mm F/2.8 x 1–5 x.
Here is an example of a figurehead at 1/192.

Building WOOD model ships is a process I enjoy very much working with wood.
Photography is also another process I like to experiment.
And lastly, milling and turning metal like aluminium and plastic is also something I enjoy. As a side note, you can turn plastic with high precision.

Just like in car products, where you cannot install a door mirror of a car from one kind to another kind; the same thing appears with photography adaptors.
Fitting adaptors or adapting some new ones to experiment further in photography  of model ship is also an interesting avenue that I like to explore.

Some examples are following to show trying to take photography a model ship and getting a photo with exactly the same colors as what you see.
Of course you do not need all these adaptors to take photos but I like to experiment.

You need a focusing rail, here are 2 on top of each other. The idea is to have a cart sliding on a rail with a screw or a motor to adjust the focusing distance.

50,000rpm is for metal. Many operations works better at that speed instead of a lower speed
1000 rpm is the lower speed
2 ways to adjust the speed: roughly by the pedal or precisely by a control knob
this one has  a lot of torque , it extremely quiet and it is brushless

Scale is the first factor to consider. Which part with what level of details is the second one and finally what wood to use?

Roughly, we can divide the carvings in 2 parts: human with fine details like the hands and face, decorations like flowers.

There are still many experiments to be made with different woods than boxwood. Pernambuco, ivory wood could be good examples of dense wood with fine grains which could be good. The safe way to use a wood that can take small details is to use boxwood.
Boxwood takes details of a figurehead as good as  at 1 /192 and 1/24 scale. But all the carvings do not need extreme fine details. Cherry is perfectly suitable for general carvings

One last point, Color, for this build, up to now, is made 100% from cherry wood. Ideally, I would like to use cherry for all the carvings, but unfortunately this wood will not take the fine details. The same thing is true for apple wood, I tried it for another figure head.
Ideally, I would prefer the figurehead  would be, also from the same wood, as the ret of the build: cherry wood, so that int this specific build, every part could be the same color.

There are many choices that a model ship builder has to deal with and the main rule should always be: it has to look harmonious. Tree nailing is a good example. It should be visible from close but not from far. If the contrat is too big, the eye will only see the nails, not the ship.

What is the last photo? Lighting in the working area is done by 8 LED lights mainly. Lat week, Our electricity company installed new thermostats, switches and electrical outlets. Every device is controllable via an app. I used the 4 electrical outlets to control the lighting with an Ipad, near the desk
