  1. Thanks for that discussion. I will try Sparex after soldering before blackening and cut the Brass Black with water at 1:5 and report. Is the Sparex suitable for degreasing such that the pickled piece can go directly into the blackening solution, or is it best to rinse with water or acetone first? HD
  2. It’s like the patina rubs off. I’ve tried cleaning again with Acetone and dipping a third time, but that doesn’t seem to really solve the problem., Any thoughts?
  3. Yes. Overlooked the section in vol 2. What does it mean when my blackened pieces, even after 2 drippings in Birchwood Casey Brass Black, when dried, leave spots of copper looking metal when gently rubbed????? Henry
  4. Remaining swivel guns, rails, safety ropes. Deadeyes and stern light next. Can someone tell me what the large beam mounted across the foredeck and protruding well off the starboard side was for? Henry
  5. The swivel guns took about a month. After I mounted those on the quarter deck, I realized I was one short for the fore deck! Been counting constantly, just to make sure they were all there. So, of course, one is missing. Looked everywhere. Anyway, making one more shouldn’t be a major deal. Just beating my head!! Also, one of my LED leads broke off where it exits on the bottom of the keel. No slack. Oh well. I might cut a section out of the keel to retrieve the end of that lead. Haven’t decided. 6. Third go at Perseus. Each one a little better than the last.
  7. Doesn’t pass the camera test but at 1/48, that’s my best shot. If I tried to smooth it out, there’d be breakage!
  8. Perseus minus right arm holding Medusa’s head. To be added later with Pegasus’ wing. Too many break offs!
  9. Thanks Kevin. The TurboCarver bits on the mill were invaluable in making the pilasters. And the Tulle mesh is perfect. Trying to decide what’s next. Henry
  10. I found a posting within the forum in fittings, etc. dealing with this subject and suggesting Tulle netting fabric in beige and was able to order a small sample. We’ll see what comes.
  11. In contemplating the netting for the birthing rail, the gauge is just too narrow for my skills to undertake. Does anyone have a resource for its purchase? I have some which I bought for my Gros Ventre but it’s black. Maybe I ‘ll spray it tan, which is the preferred color, unless there are better recommendations.
  12. Beautifully done! Did you do the rails with a scraper or knife? I found the former produced more irregularities than the #11 blade.
  13. Main elements of the head completed. Does anyone know of a good resource for relief carving?
  14. You’ll notice that I don’t try to sanitize my work, however humbling that of so many on this forum is to me. The dirt, dust and imperfections, however, are the real thing. The important message I try to convey in sharing my stuff is that there are no short cuts, that the time and effort, as well as the imperfections, are there, in plain view. While I follow many of your builds and am inspired beyond words by your images, which render me speechless, I will continue to share my progress and learn from your example. Thank you. Henry
  15. Thanks, Kevin! Putting a bit of time in with the weather as it is here. Gotta make headway before fishing season. Henry
