got a half decent day yesterday so got the bottom lacquered (still stinks of lacquer in the workshop after 24 hours!) also test fitted the figuerhead which needed a bit of fettling and tweaking to fit. Bit of advise for billings vic builders- trim the forepeak to shape before you add too much detail to the hull as i had to pare a lot of wood off to get it to fit.

Not been much done with models recently due to visitors and the untimely passing away of our tabby cat Jack who was 3 years old- he was rescued by the R.S.P.C.A. and adopted by us along with his sister- He did have health issues but he did have three happy years with us hunting every small furry animal within range of the house. Just wanted to post a tribute to him he was hell of a character!

Jack with his sister elizabeth or elly for short when only a few months old- our daughter is a massive fan of pirates of the caribean hence the names!
Back to HMS Victory- primed the hull twice which will now be sanded back to bare wood. also primed the wheels and stained them.

So in the mean time back at the ranch....

I have decided to try my hand in scratch building the ships launch(if that is the correct term?), as the metal 'thing' supplied by AL does not look good.

Got the plans from the Swedish Maritime Museum site, it might not be 100% historically accurate, but i'm hoping its going to look better than the AL offering.

Peter thanks for the good words.
I purchased Rigging Period Ship Models by Lennarth Petersson, this has excellent drawings of different parts of the rigging for period ships. The drawings are very detailed and a great help for someone like me that has limited experience of rigging a ship.
The other book I have is The Armed Transport Bounty by John McKay, this is from the Anatomy of the Ship series.
These books I can highly recommend for anyone building the Bounty.

1.7.2015 Preparing Mizzen yard and sail.

Everything went pretty smoothly today. I spent quite a time thinking the position of the sail in the mizzen mast. The sails are ready made in Constructo kit, but looking at the guide and looking model I found in Internet, the sail is positioned differently. Also, in the Constructo part guide says that the mizzen yard is 215mm, and in the plan it's clearly 265mm. Also the sail's longest side is 260mm. Next I examined the sewings, which are different in few models. I decided to use the long mizzen yard (265mm) and attach the longest side of the sail to the yard.

    It's looking good.

The best way to learn is by trial and error, in my opinion.

I'm building the AL version of the Mayflower, so i'm following your build with interest.

I have started this model a couple of years ago, but being my first attempt, realized that I was way out of my depth.

I then put the build on hold and decided to try something simpler to develop my skills and try again.

I have since completed the basic AL Mare Nostrum (loaded the pics in the Gallery), which taught me enough to build up the courage to try my hand at the Mayflower again.

I have to say that the planking and other tutorials and knowledge on MSW(1 and 2) has been a tremendous aid in teaching me the basic skills.

    Thank you MSW!

So this is where it is at the moment, I have put the bulkheads and keel together, decided to add extra balsa wood spacers between the bulkheads, as they felt a bit wobbly.

The false decking has been installed, but the Ramin planks supplied for decking, is in my opinion, crap! Way to brittle and it does not sand to a smooth finish. Not sure if anybody else have had the same problems with Ramin, but I decided to replace it with Maple, so i'm waiting for delivery from Cornwall Model Boats.
Since i'm living in the good old South Africa, this can take a while!

    Obechi - similar to mukaly

Annegre - same as tanganyka pretty much, same application, Billings use this for decking

    Bokapi - not sure

    Dibetou - a walnut

    Manzonia - similar to walnut

Mukaly - yellowish wood, used for deck planking (constructo kits use this)

Red Paduc - not sure but reminds me of sapele

Tanganyka - very very common wood for deck planking, light brownish. Italian companies wood of choice for decking.

Mostly these are African woods that are similar colours and properties.

Check out Constructo and Billings kits as these woods are supplied with those kits.

Most italian manufacturers and Caldercraft use tanganyka for deck planking
