If memory serves me correctly i used red all the way to the bow.  You are doing well.  Be careful when you start buiding up the bow some of those shapes can be confusing.

This is one of the interesting parts.  The planks are straight run for the top ones.  What I did was literally make card templates for the rest.  Since there are no stealers you will have to bend and shape every plank to fit.  It will take some practice but if you like the end result you did it right. Check out the English Long Boat Logs and they will give you a good idea of what I am describing.

You picked a model that will give you some interesting moments.  I built this model years ago when I still had a full head of hair.  But I will be glad to give you any advise you need if my feeble memory can remember.

Nigel, It depends on the paint.  I have used this method with pear, and apple as well as several hardwoods.  Once the piece has been brought to the right thickness I would give it a coat of sealer.  Once dry I would spray it on usinf either a rattle can or my airbrush.  Since the paint would be half dry by contact I never had any problem with bleeding.  But you are correct that experimenting is the best way to do it.

Like I said before Nigel.  A great Idea.  However at the smaller scales I have found that taking a piece of wood that is the same thickness as the width of the plank and giving it a light coat of paint will do nicely as well.  Once the paint dries you just slice off the planks and apply them in the same matter.  Since I am a firm beliver in scraping a slight irregularity in the plank hight does not bother me.

Great looking deck Popeye.  I see that you follow a rule I always like.  When caulking a deck try to make it subdued so that it does not stand out and detract from the beauty of the planking and the wood used.

Robert one of the rules in planking is the type or design of a hull. If you can get a copy of Monfeldt's book on ship modeling he can show you the different ways it was done depending on the area and time. Many of the mediterranean vessels were built without stealers. They were built with the hull planking first and the frame and supports were put in later. In Europe it was frame first then the planking was added. This is the reason for the straight run of planking. If my memory is correct your kit is single planked. I wish I could find the photos I took all those years ago to show what I am talking about. That is why I suggested going to look at the English Longboats. To further your research Google galleys and check out the results. The end result will be your choice and what you are happy and satisfied with. Satisfaction and enjoyment in your work is the greatest and most important rule of all. If you are having a good time that is all that counts.

Jerry, with everything that has been happening with me I missed your log.  My apologies.  If I had the software I could make a small fortune turning it into a book.  Titled the Journey of the Constellation, from concept to the Water.  I am learning many things about RC that I have never knew before.

My package arrived today.  The book is a nice size and and easy to read for those with bad eyes.  There are several tables giving sizez and dimensions along with plans and diagrams.  To me this is a keeper.  I will enjoy this book when I go back to Iowa City.  From what I have seen this is a must for anyone who want to build a Swan class vessel either kit or scratch.

Another thing you have to think about is the species of wood you are using.  Is it flexible or stiff as a board.  I have found using the right type of wood helpful when planking and bending.

For anyone who uses a syringe you can flatten out the needle.  Then use this to make your trunnels.  The hollow needle will leave a very fine circle and with the grain going in the same direction looks great.  I am now on Lovenox injections daily.  Once I learn how to deactivate the safety on the syringes I will flatten out the tips and give it a try.  Be very careful if you do this though.

The problem with naptha is that it is  highly flamable.  Not to be used in a confined space.  While I have used it every now and then I prefer not using it in my apt if I do not have to, the fumes may ignite if there is a spark if there is no adequate ventilation.  As a result I prefer mineral spirits ot turps as my solvent of choice.

dgbot got a reaction from Bill Hudson in Is there a better #11 blade handle
I use a handle I found in a hobby shop years ago.  It tightens from the back and is rubber with a hexagonal shape at the end so it does not roll around.  As a result of being tightened in the back the blade is secure and will not loosen up.

Fantastic build Greg.  I thought it was the real thing when I saw those black and whites.  I would love to see that model at Manitowoc when finished it would be a show stopper.
