Finally finished building the frames and installing them on the keel (in the building jig). Only had to unglue and reinstall 3 of the 27! As nice as accurately laser-cut elements are, I'm joining others on the forums in my disdain for sanding char! Below are a couple of views of the frames in place: Notice the switch in orientation between frames 12 & 13. In this photo the keelson has also been installed. Next up are the upper planks and ceiling (inner) planks!

Sorry for the long hiatus. Back to work assembling frames. CAF includes sets of clear plastic alignment jigs for this phase: a flat base, a layer laser-cut to receive the floor futtocks and another layer with cutouts for the side pieces which overlap the floors. Instructions assure you that woodworking glue will not stick to the jigs -- well, guess what! Needed to contact CAF for replacement frame parts -- which arrived promptly, btw -- and am now gradually getting the frames together. The key seems to be sanding off ALL of the laser char from the frame pieces (without snapping the little buggers!) and test-fitting into the jig to be sure that they'll push through the cutouts without binding. Have also been running my 11 blade around the glued overlap area before lifting the top jig layer. Also found that doing three frames (one 'column') at a time instead of the full jig's worth allowed me to gradually lift the top jig layer while pressing the frame down through it. Cool concept, difficult (for me anyway) in execution Pix to follow with my next post, when hopefully I can show the frames complete!

Is your production of Chuck's Speedwell on the schedule anywhere?

I understand that Portland is designed as an "Admiralty style" model; BUT do you have available a masting/rigging/sail plan for the ship? I actually enjoy building all of the "top hamper"!

I've been following for months, and am thrilled to see progress continuing. As soon as there's a sign-up list for purchasing this kit, I'm THERE!

Have been following quietly, but have to jump in and say this looks like an awesome project! Looking forward to getting started on it!

Any further progress on this boat? Mine is on order, and love picking up tips from a master!

Starting my first build log: the 1:48 Longboat by CAFModel, designed to go along with their French frigate LaRenommee. I've been wanting to get going on a POF model for some time, but am not ready to go scratch -- neither in terms of skills nor in terms of tools. I'm hoping that this small kit will allow me to build my skills to the point that I might attempt a larger POF project. As a brief aside, there do not seem to be many options for POF kits from approved producers; I've found CAF to be basically it, except for Chuck's exceptional models which are not currently available. Perhaps Chris Watton at Vanguard will have the Speedwell available by the time I'm ready to move on! James H has a wonderful kit review up for this model (https://modelshipworld.com/topic/36837-148-longboat-cafmodel/), so I won't spend time repeating what he already has done. I WILL say, though, that Tom at CAF is very responsive to questions and got my kit to me from China in under10 days -- and without my paying any TrumpTariffs! The box is compact and carefully packed: We begin by building the framing jig from well-fitting plywood parts: Next is the assembly of the keel to the stem, along with the construction of the hawser roller at the peak of the stem.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
