Keith Simmons got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Kalavente by Keith Simmons - FINISHED - An Elven prayer ship
I decided to try a more advanced style of a hollow hull and as usual with no specific theme in mind..lol. I started with some scrap pine and ran it through my table saw at a 22.5 bevel. Then just started to to glue them up to a 33.5 degree keel.

At the water line I reversed the angle and extended the hull to a desired deck width. Once that was done I added cross members for the decking and strength, ran the Cherry decking and sat back looking for a theme. Then it came to me, a Timber Framed sterncastle and of I went creating an Elven Prayer Ship. Silly I know, this stuff just comes to me...lol.

The ship is made of just Pine and Cherry, and the final design is still evolving, hope you like the end result and the " hollow hull " evolution. Thanks for looking...

I'm picking this log back up starting with the rigging stage of this model. The masts and yards are complete, and the hull's deadeyes and etc. are on.

My goal with this model is to accurately depict the appearance of a prime example of a clipper ship. My concern is to depict all components scaled correctly and to do all at the best of my ability hoping to show the highest development of the wooden merchant ship.

I like speed. I like the example these ships made in the form follows function regard. These ships came about at a period in history when speed was essential. Generally they were driven without mercy as a true racing machine should be. As an old worn out motorcycle racer and builder these clippers really grab me by the guts

You see the model after she has had a first attempt at the standing rigging stripped from her. As with most of the build I've had to do everything at least twice.

I'll post as time and health permits, hope you enjoy the rigging process.

    I think this pretty close...

Here's the jig I've been using along with a pattern.

I've cut out the coat from thin cloth that has a light brown stain to emulate the Stockholm Tar and have started the installaton.

It's been folded down for trimming and gluing.

And the final gluedown.  It bulges nicely but still needs a bit trimming after the glue sets.  The rudder is a slight angle to port and puts just bit twist to the coat.

I think I'm onto the quarter galleries....

I think I got it.  Or are at least darn close.  If not, I'll do another one.

Mate you'll be fine, the problem at this scale is rigging, it's hard to belay, pulleys and blocks are too small, and you have to come up with a representation of what it should look like. I e spent 6 hours today doing shrouds and signal ropes. All my plans were for nought as to what I wanted to do as its too small. On a wooden ship I can belay and place stays, at this scale there is no rope on earth I can use, so I use EZ line, which sometimes does what it wants. Rigging my Endeavour was fun and logical, this is not.

Thanks for the comments and the "likes"...

Here's the rudder ready to hang.   Once the cudgeons are on the hull, I'll add the rudder coat and mount it.  I'll probably pin it to the sternpost from the inside of the hull just to keep it in place as I'll be flipping the hull over a few more times before cutting it loose and mounting it to a cradle.

I made a judgement call after testing on some scrap about the bolts.  Not going to happen.  If the bolts are visible, they're oversize by an order of magnitude.  If' they're just the right size, they're invisible.

I also did some testing to compare Jax Black to Birchwood Casey Black.  Not much difference except maybe the Birchwood Casey is a bit blacker and also seems to cover silver solder better.

Been a busy of testing this stuff.

    Ok.. pictures.....

First piccy shows the old and the new together.  I'm happier with the new and the old is hitting the scrap box.   The second pic has a dummy sternpost next to it.  I've got a big smile on that one.

Thanks Patrick, had a bit of a problem with the sail configuration and I am in the process of rethinking rigging. The real problem of design on the fly is when it doesn't look right , it doesn't look right ..lol. Hopefully I get it right this time...

Thanks Jolley, appreciate the input, Since I was using African woods or this build I looked up Lightning Bolt and saw the current spelling. I actually like the correct spelling better so I will use that on name plate....  thanks again....

Finally have 80% of sails made and mocked up on ship. Time to take it all apart and start final rigging, my fingers are sore just thinking about it...lol. With ships this size, once I decide it's new home I have to patch and paint walls. The work never ends...

    Hi guys,
I’m a newbie here, and I come from Taiwan(not Thailand).
here I'd like to show you my little tips & tricks:

You can get the wooden Christmas card or any wooden book card:

to make carved doors or carved wall

And the lead ball is better then steel balls to simulating the cannonball ….

using syringe to control the flow of glue

May the force be with you.

    Hi Keith

Nice to see the sails temporarily set up.  With her raked masts and lofty sails, she looks fast just sitting there.

    Nice job.

    Cheers

thanks Mark Keith and Greg.......also to those who hit the like button.   white primer is good.......it will keep any color that the hull will be, bright as it will affect that pigment in the paint.   I have a color in mind,  but I'm curious to see what hue it will become,  using a darker primer.   not only that, but the red primer will also work as the bottom paint.   I worked on her a bit more last night......I put a border strip around the top of the inner bulwarks.   it will reinforce the bulwarks and give a better surface to cement the cap rails to.

I have a thought about the fore deck........and the helm room.   I want the helm room aft,  but with what I want to do,  it can't happen.   I didn't make the fore deck large enough to accept it.....but in writing this,  I thought of something that would be a good solution.   one problem though.......the more I think,  the more that the tree boat concept takes a back seat.   I have also given this some thought as well.........I do have a back up solution,  but I don't want to cause confusion.  it would be sad to think that this type of hull,  was a bad idea to base this concept on.

thanks for your likes and comments,  I really appreciate it
