Hi, Thanks again for those likes. This is just a short update on my progress. Only the rails at the stern to show, but progress is progress. You may notice that I've started the rear boat davit, one of many, there are eleven ships boats on board, something to look forward to building, ( or not )

Hello first modeler,
I built my first basic wooden ship kit in 1983/84. It was a Billings Golden Hind. It came with a large book of instructions (one language only), quality drawings and excellent timber. At the time I guess the price was around A$200 to A$300 dollars (say around $1000 today). Included in the instruction booklet were comprehensive "how to's" on plank bending, planking and rigging. I completed a creditable model by following the instructions.
Instructions contained in today's kits within the above price range are essentially non existent. Kits are reasonably priced (some would say cheap), so I guess manufacturers would tend to skip the niceties and assume in some instances that the builders are already a part of this niche hobby. The manufacturers are after all scrambling for market share and profits.
Flashy boxes woo the unsuspecting and excitable newcomer with promises of glorious galleons and clippers from history. Exciting stuff. And why not!
Build what you have an emotional attachment to, I believe this is the most important requirement for completing a model. Instructions come from researching sites like this. The internet age has delivered all the instructions you need to the tips of your fingers. Never have we had it so good. All that is required is your attention.
Dive in, the waters warm.

Hi. The build continues, this time it’s the platform that the two large pinnace sit on, a bit fiddly to make because of the round slats but no real problem. I’ve also made and fitted some small parts but these now seem not worth mentioning. I’ve attached some pictures.

Hi Bruma. I did try it. Massive Thank you! I will post you probably love emoticon as you pointed me to dry brush method and helped to enhance the hard effort of carving
. I knew there was somethijg missing in it, something very important. I looked into it and the mwthod is fabulous. It consist of building up layers upon layers of tiny amount of gold or metallic color with pointing of brush rather than strokes. Always from tiny portion up not otgerwise. I believe it paid off hansomely. It enhanced carved relief that stepped even more out of black surface behing. At this point it is more than adequate i think. What do you think?

Little amusing details.
(So Still ongoing)..... How is everyone? Im posting sime recent detailing work along lifeboats platform. I decided deliberately to sit platform on cabin roof instead of letting it little higher and I secured it with curved rod endings eyes for middle boat. Thin legs supporting it are simply not fastened on bottom side as firm to keep all platform and boats firmly, now its okish. then various works on boats related...rudder is not completed yet... ..thank you very much for the look. The carved (3D) one is much better, more realistic, and more suited to a model of your size. Even without gold paint.
But maybe consider to make it a bit more gold somehow, highlight it maybe?

Dear all,
Last chapter, Captains gig.
Irony of life do magics. Its strange that such small boat would bring me most joy of entire mammoth project on scale vessel. I have lits of small leftovers so i decided to make captains gig as a last point before wrap.
If someone is interested i can describe this method i tried. I observed mold works - so i bought small boat model for few euro. Completed bulkheads Filled up with balsa wood and voila - mold ready. - than i bended ribs/ to be oversized / and just simply clamped them with some rubber ring fasteners. / girls clamp their hairs with those/ ...
.....rest is usual as any clinker....
Even she is not symetrical gave me fun.

Good day everyone,
Im posting some updates from last twoo weeks. There is proper flooring completed on all decks at this point, I aimed for symetry of bibbing on forecastle deck. I installed new sheer and painted proper "cemented dark grey strake stands are moored into, i quite like what it looks like after i twisted metal sheet to prpoper topraip curvature facing outwards. ...i need to fill bowsprit / floor gap though... also showing how did i worked on forecastle from start to finish. Poop deck floor is properly curved along the gangway...and met in center/ probably not like prototype but...well...Toilets have dark paneling as seen on famous picture of cutty moored at melbourne wharf.
I see now that proper decking is probably one of most essential parts of boats designing / structural and functional object covering vast amount of space in ship. It looks majestic now..
From now on I will install functional machinery, etc....i have still work on remaining 2 rowboats ongoing, capitain gig and dinghy. so that will come further. This time i will try to put on the floor osmo top finish that should not color the floor. Willl see the outcome. Many thanks for watch etc... V.

Usually running rigging consists of halyards, lifts, braces, parrels etc.. Job done. Model complete. However, I am coming up to riggging my Cutty Sark. So, my basic question. What was the standard practice regarding bunt lines, clew lines, sheets etc,,, did they come down with the sails, or did they stay up there?

Hi, The build continues at a good pace. Today’s post shows some of the smaller projects that I’ve made up whilst waiting for paint/glue to dry, they include some hatches, waist lockers, deck storage units, skylights etc.
I’ve shown my start on the wheelhouse, I’ll continue showing this soon, I’ve done more of it but I haven’t sorted the photos out yet, it’s coming out better than expected

And so it has started....
Great planking of 2020. Started offv yesterday , had to use paper as caulk because no pencil would be wide enough to be realistic un my scale. I worked in batches of 13 timbers - cutting, gluing with wood glue to furm paper of 1/3 mm, i was nervous but once lfigured out that it went smooth cutting with surgical scalpel, ut went quite fast. When glued up i sanded rough ends to the line in once... fingers crossed as im doing this first time, but i rembmber from real floor laying that many can go awfully wrong easily. measured it throughout twice and so far satisfied....will see how it goes on if the kung plank is straight...im less nervous now but sheer will be it....ow . Done roofing on decjs as well. Poop will be dark with white seams..thx

You are correct Vlad. Longridge states that "the wooden deck was bolted directly onto the beams, and the bolt holes filled with dowels".
All he mentions with regard to the deck house roofs is that he believes they were originally roofed with teak planking and caulked like the deck. Not much to say really.

Further information. Longridge also mentions the holes as being .8mm diameter (and 3mm in from the butt end of the plank) in 1:48 scale. Adjust this to your scale.

I have a copy of Longridge's book on the Cutty Sark. He states, "each plank had a dowel in the centre of its width wherever it crossed a deck beam, and one close to each end to secure the butt from rising."
I guess the answer is one treenail in the centre of the plank.

Hi,
First thanks again to those of you who are following my build and for your likes and comments.
My build is progressing nicely and I have just completed the stern gallery, it went well with no issues. I kept the construction as simple as I could and have not kept to its proper colour scheme again choosing just black and varnished wood, some staining was applied.
The pre cut ply was too large to fit the hull properly so I added three planking strips to the inner edge, with the extra meat I was the able to sand it back to get an exact fit to the hull. I made up the several gratings then using the plans as a guide only, assembled it, painted and varnished then added the name. The only disappointment was that one of the cast supports was missing, I left the gap at the centre to keep it symmetrical and hope that the ships boat which will eventually hang over the stern will hide the omission, apart from that it came out well.

Good evening everyone,
so i am posting completed lifeboat. took me whole week.
thank you for looking, comments etc...its only my 2nd so please dont expect much interior is simplified comparing to prototype... ...painted acrylics and vaxed oil afterwards.
feeling like medieval monk doing minucules and yet building on mammoth scale. from now on
starting deck planking !
