RGL got a reaction from ScottRC in HMS Dreadnought 1907 by RGL - FINISHED - Zvezda - 1/350- PLASTIC
At home off work with man flu. Being productive, I cut the pulleys off the one piece etch and rigged with easy line. The pivot point on the boom is somewhere on the floor of my garage as it was dropped by some idiot whilst it was being painted, and I had to fabricate a new one from plastic card.
The search light platform and a smaller search light. I will need to add a small ladder when the crowsnest goes on.
And finally the sidelights which are referenced in the AOTS but ignored by everyone else.

The bottom of the foremast is now pretty much complete.
I fabricated the three tripod support struts out of very very thin copper pipe, placing 1x1mm support blocks to rest them on.
As this is the 1907 version, I have added boat booms (using the undersize coaling derricks from the kit) making support brackets from spare etch. The larger derricks are Pontos. I won't rig them up until the upper masts go on. I have also added 6 belaying points to the tripod which will be needed later.
The engine telegraph platforms come withe the Pontos kit, but the telegraphs are North star, and I rand some black line to simulate the control rods which run belowdecks.
Finally the 1907 version had semaphores just off the Admirals cabin which a fabricated agin and have the resting on another support strut made out of excess etch.
It does not seem like much, and the macro is not flattering but it was as fiddly as hell. There is a little bit of touch up painting to go but that can wait.
I guess I'll have to do the main davit next, and it's rigging and pulleys consist of a single piece of etch which I have cut up so I can rig is correctly.

And done.Messy at first;
Then, they are supposed to be slung below but at they are under tension, they need to be tight, and as the whole assemby is very fragile, it's somewhat nerve racking.

Getting there.
Next, the Anchors. The original photo shows no running plates for the anchor chain, but the instructions do. So I didn't do it.
The Kit provides a basic bit of blurry plastic, Pontos provides some blackened chain and befitting my OCD I went with North Star, using their patterned chain as is correct, a little bit out of scale, 2 days of pain. Seriously, my forearms and hands feel like a really good session on the heavy bag. At least one complete line is somewhere in my study of individual pieces flying around. I eventually figured out a technique using jewelers pliers, tweezers and back crams that worked, allowing me to close the loops so the thing does not fall to bits. .
Next, the Capstans, just plonked on, fit and look OK.
Then the anchors again after market (the kit ones are rubbish) joined with a proper metal loop.
Next, threaded in and attached to the deck. I had earlier drilled out the holes. I am leaving one sitting at length as it makes sense to have it on the sea floor given there nets will be out.
Next the stoppers;
Finally, the dandyfunk of vents, hawser covers, brakes and extra equipment boxes.
Finally I'm at that impasse where I have to do the turrets and big guns that will go under the rigging and inside the rails.

The trickiest thing so far, the davits, with the canvas straps replaced, rigging attached and the smaller whalers.

The large boats now added to the ship.
And the breakwaters.

Now, there are a LOT of ships boats. The kit provides some aftermarket and I've added a bit more just to be silly.
The row boats need to be hollowed out and some grates and planks added,
And finally the davits. The loop shown is supposed to be canvas strap which I'll remove and rig properly (to a point).
I am in the process of painting these now.

I have added small vents to where the AOTS references them, the rear compass stand, two aftermarket winches (instead of the blobs provided), the coaling booms, affixed the main mast..
A big problem is that a LOT of the deck glue is going, requiring the application of glue to affix it properly. .
I have now added all the hatch covers bar one which is going to be sanded right back and re done due to a fail on my behalf, plus I added the breakwaters. Photos of those later once I have done up the ships boats.

Haha, you're correct. The 3 colours are white, rust and black. I actually prefer the Uschi brand. I read that it deteriorates in UV light. Still, a lot easier than stretched Sprite as you can lash it.

You'll need differing diameters just like a tall ship. It's a pity it does not come in grey. The smallest is very hard to see and harder to work with. It sticks to the oils on your fingers.

Have you tried Ezyline? Very light, does not have to pull hard to get tension and if you knock it, it gives. Try a pinprick of CA to the joins on the rigging just to be sure. Basically very thin elastic bands.

Considering how much even the really expensive aftermarket leaves out requiring even more internet shopping, I'm not going to go larger, as I have lots of spares now, yet alone the storage space required. It might force my hand into buying an airbrush as well which I have been putting off. This scale shows detail without the bulk.
Happy to watch others tackle the big stuff!

The spreaders are steel etch that came with the upgrade. I am now in the process of bending the torpedo net Davits, comes in two pieces, so that's 84 pieces, requiring 120 folds for the base, and 42 folds for the davit itself. Eyesight fading.
