FriedClams reacted to rwiederrich in Great Republic 1853 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - four masted extreme clipper
Thanks Patrick...I work relatively fast when I have the time to do so.  I plan out my work in stages and finish each stage before moving onto the next.  I feel I get more accomplished when I tackle small jobs....they eventually all add up.

Once I can measure the finished dimensions of the ship....I'll probably frame out(from knotty maple) a display case.  Unlike most of my models that are out of reach by most..this one will be at table top level and needs protection from marauding grandkids fingers and creeping feline-ical critters.

    Hi Rob

Dang, you work fast!  She's gonna pretty spectacular once done, that's for sure.

Have you got a display case sorted for her?

    Cheers

Sorry about all the clutter behind the model...it's just too big to move around all the time for images.

I have to make sure I pay close attention to getting all the mast hoops for the spanker sail in place before I mount/step the spanker mast.  So too for all the other masts that will be having pin posts added to their bases.  I probably won't secure the masts till they are totally complete.

Clear skies and smooth sailing .......

Well after lots of quality time working on the build...I finished up the spanker mast....oiled it and the jimboom..tinkered on a few other minor details..I think I'm done for the day.

    What's next.....

Well I still need to rig the top deadeyes and futtock shrouds on each mast and then rig the topmasts and so forth till I'm done with the masting.

    Here's a couple more pics.

Well..I'm almost there.  Here are a few images to bring ya'll up to speed.

I finished the tops and rigged them with their eyebolts...now I'm focusing on the spanker mast.

Finished the foremast top.  I had to make 3 sizes of eyebolts for this build and set the medium bolts for the clew/leach line blocks.  They were probably painted....because black iron rust horribly in salt air.

After I finish all three masts..I will add the deadeyes and futtock shrouds.

Just so no one is confused(especially myself).....  the Fore/main/mizzen lower masts doublings will be painted black as will the top mast doublings.  I left them white and was waiting till the mast is fully assembled before painting them.
The top masts and topgallant masts will be Varnished...only the doublings will be painted black.

    More later....as later gets closer.

After lengthy searching I found the appropriate version that nearly represents the Great Republic as she sailed down from Boston to NY.
One item that will be altered is the lower spanker mast which was not painted white, but was varnished to permit free movement of the spanker sail mast hoops.
As depicted in lithographs of the period and described by eye witnesses(Such as Duncan McLean) she had no sail higher then Royals forward and aft.

This a good representation of how I will depict the beautiful Great Republic.

It is prudent to mention that most images and paintings of her show her with 6 sails per mast...this was her final representation after she was rebuilt...this was because her overall sail plan was reduced(doesn't look like it when you go from 5 sails per mast to 6)...but the size of each sail/yard was reduced significantly...so in reality she actually lost several hundred yards of canvas.
No wonder she was originally called the *Behemoth*.  She was HUGE with the largest main yards (120ft) ever placed on a sailing vessel.

Reminds me of my daughter when she about 5.  I walked into the kitchen where she was holding a glass of water.  She promptly let go and the glass and water was all over.  I said " Annie, why did you do that?" She responded that it wasn't her fault "it was gravity.........it's everywhere".  True story.

    Hello Frank,

What a great subject.  I really enjoy working boats - and what a bonus that she is also beautiful in line.  I wish you enjoyment on this build.  I'll be following along and learning.

Hi Druxey and John, yes I will be doing that with a little clear just to maintain the idiosyncratic method of the originals. That will keep future conservers thinking.

Happy to have you following along Pat
Nils, at least I didn't have to make them just fix a few up.

I have begun working on the missing davit replacement the first thing was to sort of measure it up I did this with a pair of vernier calipers and a pencil tracing.

I could have used the mill drill out in the shop but it was snowing and getting late so just opted for a drill in a pin chuck with a #68 drill bit to spot the holes through the .020" brass for the side plates.

After the holes were drilled I used the jewelers saw to fret out the sides these will be annealed before I bend the bottom section prior to soldering the three main body parts together.

I used some brown Testors paint brushed onto some different textures of card and the Stash tea box was the best to give the right amount of absorption of the gloss paint to leave it as a semi gloss.

the three following images were taken with different lighting the first Tungsten the second Fluorescent last one being Daylight I am happy enough with the results and as long as I am careful with the placement I think they will be passable.

    Very nice restoring work Michael,
and quite a task to get all those boats in order again, the result is good looking
I`m just reminded of the boats fabrication I still have to push on when I get to that sequence...

Druxey,Yes a good Idea I shall certainly give this some attention. three of the boats had no thwarts in them (no doubt swept up in the debris of the event)
a couple of the boats on the starboard side have one or two thwarts missing with most showing some level of random curvature. only one of the port side boats had all the thwarts intact.

    I'm looking John, I'm looking.
well I made an interesting discovery and I am not quite sure how I missed it but this one will be tricky.

So easy to spot now but was more difficult earlier

The davits that sustained the most damage were in line with the aft funnel and got pretty twisted up. I noticed that the arms were stamped out of sheet so Bassett Lowke must have either jobbed out the stamping or made enough of these to have their own small punch press or fly press.

I am going to be using one of the good davits as a pattern and will fabricate one out of some brass and paint it to look like the rest.

I might suggest leaving at least one 'original' boat's thwarts for posterity? Perhaps there is one boat where the warpage is not objectionably severe? Also, you might want to see if the curvature can be flattened by dampening the underside of the card with a wet brush. If this works, consider sealing the underside so that the card does not change dimension with atmospheric humidity.
