What a great time of the year, not only the holidays, but all the college football games.  I’m not going to get much done on this build for the next three weeks.   I did manage however to clean up the bulkheads and dry fit them, that’s when I found out #14 (third from end) was bad.  You can see in the first picture #14 is not big enough.  So it was back to the drawing board, so to speak, I use DraftSight, and I did find the error.   Picture two shows both #14 bulkheads and then how the new part lines up.

And with that I’ll say Merry Christmas to all, with wishes for a great 2014.

    Bob

Hi Robert. I am watching your log and I am filled with amazement! You are doing a great job tackling some of the issues that are inherent with this kit. I have just purchased it myself, and I can't wait to get started. I really like the changes you made on the windows and shutters. The yellow is a bit too much in my opinion. You did a fine job with the curved staircases as well. One of the biggest things that concerns me about this model is the deck support posts. I hope I am able to find a way to make them work for me! Thanks for sharing your build, Robert!

Firstoff, a HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone on MSW.  May health, wealth and good building be in store for all!

Thought I'd start the year with a small update.

The planking of the upper hull has been completed with the addition of the second layers for the main and channel wales.  In addition, the main wales have been painted........8 coats of diluted MS acrylic black.  It's got the slightest bit of sheen to it but I'll address that later:

Here's a close up.  The strake just above the black main wale is the 'black strake' which, for some reason, is not black.  It is thinner than the wale so it makes for a nice detail.  The wales and black strake have been tapered and contoured into one another so the edge is nice and neat.  Thanks to Bob (Rafine) for mentioning the fact that he paints the edges of the wales before putting them on.  That really simplifies the painting:

The next step will be treenailing the outer hull.  I'll be using the 'drill and fill' technique.  I need to get the right color on the filler and determine the pattern before proceeding.  Once that's done a second coat of stain will be applied to darken the upper hull....then more painting etc.  FUN STUFF

OK, let's see your latest  !!!!!

Looking good Augie.   Should you choose another treenail pattern remember to still go small.  Anything larger than a #78 drill bit would probably be too large and historically inaccurate.  Although it is a matter of personal taste.   Going with Bob's pattern is also not accurate so its just a matter of going with what you like.   You dont want the model to look like it has the measles.

But thats a long way off.   Try a few tests on some scrap first.

I have found a solution thanks to Popeye and Mobbsie

I let it twist, remove the lanyard while holding the deadeye, replace the lanyard and it stays straight !
    Only a lot of rack......
So the deadeyes are a little bit lower.
I have to leave it for one day and then tight them up.
    2 shrouds ( 1 pair ) a day......
Thank you Popeye and Mobbsie !

And the Aggy still stays in the box !!!!! (takes a long time before it is the first of January )

Sorry to hear about the setback Sjors...I think I qualify as the queen of reworks...it does delay things a bit, but the results are usually better the next time around.

    Augie,

The planking is looking really good.   One thing to watch is when you are ready to place the second layer of the wales (both of them) on top of the first layer.  If your planking run isnt identical at the stern where the planks run off the hull,  dont just follow that first layer with the wales.  Make some adjustments on one side or the other so the wales are even port to starboard.  Should they not be even it will cause you some problems when trying to get the quarter galleries built and the PE decorations on.   The same is true at the bow when it comes time to make the headrails much later.

Try and measure down from the cap rail on both sides after taking the measurements from the plans.  You have a bit of wiggle room there if you need to adjust them to make them even.  Just giving you something else to worry about!!!! and I hope you find it helpful.

Augie...Sorry to hear about your unintentional paint job. I look forward to the build resuming. Good to know even the best have their off days. It makes everyone look human! I'm sure the Confed will still be a prize ship when she is completed!

CaptCraig reacted to Modeler12 in Where Do You Keep Your Working Plans
I like this idea for several reasons. Plans are usually quite large and many. Having them on the computer means you can always make copies of close-ups or full size. Scaling becomes a problem, but that can be overcome.
I have been shuffling eight large drawings for more than two years and they show the wear.
Where do I store them? On top of the hood (or bonnet, if you please) of my 300ZX parked next to my workbench. Just have a peek at the first clip of the following video.

Be careful with those paper cannons. You can get expelled from school for having one of those! The lintels look great, but I see a discrepancy in the photo as well where John pointed to. Sometimes it's just the camera angle...

These Dremel tables certainly get around.  Keep them under lock and key!!!!

Is Australia really that far?  I'll bet that doesn't even count the one mile + downhill

Continued patience, Andy.  You're Peggy is not to be rushed.  Your beautiful rigging makes me feel like a cat in a yarn store.

The carpenter is back on duty and all is well with the world.  Photos when the quarter deck work is done and my embarrassment subsides

This is looking immaculate Augie! I am amazed at how fast this is coming together. I like the treenail idea as well. It looks easier then using brass wire or a treenail puller to get the right diameter...
