Having reached a goal with my anchor pool yesterday I ordered a Byrnes 4” Table Saw with some extras like Slitting Blades. Being just a wee bit excited about it I thought I would share my good fortune with the squadron.   Looks like I plan on continuing with the ship building and especially scratch building for some time.

You all have heard me say this before but I’m thoroughly enjoying this experience.

While not being able to get to the shop until late yesterday evening I did practice installing my first treenails pinning the stained basswood keel and false keel I replaced as the practice piece. Using bamboo the treenails used where pulled to .037” and inserted after applying glue to the bore. I was amazed how fast the pins would grabbed and not budge. First lesson, don't dally, get the nails home quickly. The second photo is a close up of one of the trimmed and sanded treenails which you are just able to see and pointed to with the pencil. When I start applying the treenails to the cherry frame this afternoon we’ll see what contrast occurs between the cherry and the bamboo. The last photos is the tools I used trying the razor saw and the sprue nippers. Both work well but the razor saw is limited to how close you can get to the base of the treenail depending on the location. I’ll be using .039” treenails for the frames.

Now to research where and how many treenails I should use per futtock. Lunch, then back to the shipyard. Fun!

Time to celebrate by knocking back a double tot of Nelson’s blood me thinks; I finished my first frame today. I am pleased with how it turned out with the exception of a couple of the futtock butt joints and having to sand so close to the template lines to even out the forward and aft frame segments. If I had stayed at least 1/32 of an inch proud of the template lines it would have been a big help, which will be the case for the next frame.
After letting the treenails cure over night I trimmed them so I could take the frame to the drum sander for the frame clean up. I then jigged up the frame so I could make sure that the frame mortises allowed the proper fit and squaring up to the keel and keelson. The template paper was then removed and the final sanding of the treenails with a small sanding block took place. The second picture is of the clean frame's forward side or the side that will be see as it's the "C" frame.

I know I’ve said this before but once again I’m really enjoying this. Russ and those who worked with you, thank you very much for giving us the Triton Frigate Cross Section.

Thought I would let you all get a look at my lash-up after starting the first frame assemble. After going this far it’s obvious that it could easily have been better but I will give it a go to completion of the first frame. Then if I can’t stand it I’ll make some modifications to improve it. The basic idea is OK I think I just should have planned the under framing of the jig giving more thought to the clamps I have on hand and clearances needed to take advantage of their jaw lengths. Next time.

Having read a suggestion by Russ in one of the logs I’m placing the aft futtocks with their templates to the jig and the fore futtocks with their templates facing up to aid shaping the frames once pulled from the jig.

You're doing a great job and I thank you for the detail and pictures. Like those wing-nut clamps you're using. Build on!

Life has tossed up a few distractions, and I'm doing several things similtaneously so progress has been a little slow. The hooks for the gun rigging are complete, and a start has been made on the blocks. I think the following sequence is pretty self explanatory. The second last picture shows putting a slight reverse curve on the end of the hook.

    Daniel,
glad to be of help to you.
The gun assemblies are finally complete, time required:10 weeks. For a first attempt at this stuff, I'm  satisfied with the result. This model was supposed to be finished for my sons last birthday, I'll be lucky to finish in time for the next one. Still, haste makes waste.

Thank you Josh, Rusty,Ron, and Pete.

Rusty I have put my elves to work and we will have 80 by Christmas.

      Ron,It is brass.

Pete I know yours need to be bigger.I have called the steel yard and will have the steel delivered.I have also ordered an arc welder.Yours may be a little longer wait.

Sometimes I laugh at my own jokes.

I also tried making some tacked together with super glue then re-enforced with epoxy. This was an easer way.I did this in case I do the the full model.

As you can see below I also made my wife a lovely pair of earrings.

OK, I will stop for now.   Larry

Welcome to the cross section build. Believe you will have some fun here. Your start looks good.  What types of wood are you using?

Started on the aft portion of frame "C" and thinking I should pause at this point and work out the fixture that I will use to assemble and glue-up the frames now. I have some idea also of the care I’ll need to take in cutting the keel and keelson notches. After roughing out the notches with the scroll saw I used a small file set and hobby knife for the clean-up and fitting. Kind of slow going but I enjoyed the work.

Near the beginning of my log I stated that I wanted to cut the False Keel from African Blackwood. So I thought I would throw it out here and see what may come back. At this time I’m leaning to the African Blackwood since the contrast between the cherry keel and cherry false keel is so slight.

The picture layout top to bottom is a slice of the African Blackwood that I milled the false keel from. Next is the cherry keel sitting on the African Blackwood false keel. Third is the cherry false keel and last is a glue up of cherry and African Blackwood to test the bond. The glue I used was Titebond Translucent. Seems to be strong.

Bob: One of the first things I noticed with Goodwin’s book is there isn’t an entry in the index for tree nails but I quickly learned their under Trennals.

Joss: Thanks for that. Also, thanks for giving me access to the plan locker.

Larry: I was really getting a twist in my knickers over what wood to use. I appreciate your input very much.

Today: I made new progress and after a clean sweep-down fore and aft we’re underway again. With the good description and photos of a rabbet scraper provided by some of you I tried my hand at making one and the following is the result. The wood I used is Cherry which I had a 2” x 2” x 24” stick of. It’s good to be regrouped and working again thanks to you all.

P.S. I’ll not be using a V gouge anymore for my rabbets now that you all have shown me the way. A custom made tool can put the depth and location spot on. Thanks again to everyone.

Note: The curve you see in these photos is from my lense beinging in wide angle mode at these close views.

I think I’m getting there now after you all setting me straight. After some practicing today I think I’m in business. I laid out the rabbit with the two stop cuts as Russ suggested and then cleaned out the channel with the V gouge.

    Hello Pete and Larry,
Thanks very much for that gents. When I attempt the four for the Triton I’ll just pretend that they were booty from four different foreign foundrys.

Looking at a printout of my Keel Parts Templates page and laying a straight edge on the Keelson there is a slight curve to it. Is this correct or has my printer run amuck?

    Cheers
