The aft platform was fairly simple to craft. Edge-glued after using a #2 pencil to simulate the caulking. After I was satisfied with the shape of my template I traced it onto my maple strips. Straight cuts were made with several passes of an exact knife for the general shape. The rotory tool with sanding disk got the wood close to the outline so I could fine sand the rest.

Since the strips were edge-glued, there was a slight bend. I braced the back with a single strip of wood. One more sanding and coat of finish is needed before it is glued.

They were never a sponsor but they are a great supplier.  I just placed a huge order for Cherry from them.  You cant go wrong with Ethan.  I am hoping to get them on board as a sponsor soon.  Make sure you tell him you found them through MSW and mention my name....it will help.

I will grab a seat and follow along,  as for staining make sure you sand off any excess glue or your glue will show worse because the stain can't penetrate

I was able to get a little time this afternoon to get started on the model. Since it's my first build, I figured I'd err on the side of oversharing and if it gets to be too much, everyone can let me know to scale it back a little.

I was able to put together the stand without too many issues. Will like need to stain it to help cover up some of the super glue stains but will wait until the build is complete to decide what will look the best on that front.

I sanded down the deck and started to map out the guide lines for the hull sanding but found out that the rear hole wasn't aligned with the front two. Looks like I'll get an opportunity right off the bat to get creative on moving that rear hole over and filling in the remaining gap. I still need to get the template for the deck mounted on card to trace out the rest of it but at a first glance it looks like it'll be a little tight in one or two places with not much room to work with. I'm a little worried that the alignment of the centerline on the deck and the keel is off a little bit but it may work out once I start sanding everything back so we'll see how it goes. If anyone has any things to watch out for as I start that process, I'm all ears. I'll be able to put the feedback into practice early next week, most likely, after travel is complete.

    Windlass.
I think this is better made and fitted before the thwarts are permanently fixed, more room to work with.

NMM model of Medway Longboat 1742.

Rather than just stick a pin in the end of the Windlass and engage it in a hole in the Risings I followed the arrangement of a reinforced slotted  block  as shown on the NMM versions. (see above)

    1807
Windlass blocks being formed on the Mill.

    1820
I firstly had to get the overall length of the Windlass as it would fit into the blocks before I went to the trouble of shaping the real thing.
This was very much a trial and error exercise.
In practice my Windlass worked out at 42mm o/a length as compared to the plan indicated length of 47mm.
The difference is accounted for by the thickness of the risings/reinforced mounting blocks and the inward curve of the hull.

    1815
Using some 4mm square stock I firstly made a windlass of Beechwood  to practice my technique and fix the proper dimensions before I moved onto my precious Boxwood stock.
Beech is easy to carve, and is far better than Limewood at holding definition.

    1816
So far so good, onto the proper version.

Hello. My name is Rob Robinson and I am from Victoria British Columbia Canada. I will be building the AL Bluenose II over the winter. My wife and I are snowbirds and since I don't golf I need something to keep me out of trouble for five months. Years ago when I was much younger, impatient and less handy I attempted a Bilings Cutty Sark. Disaster. Did not even make it through the planking. A lot has changed over the years and I feel this build will be better. I hope to complete the project by May so that it can be entered into an auction for sick kids in Victoria.

    Hiya Rob,

Welcome to the site from a fellow Victorian. As it happens I am currently building a Billing Cuty Sark. What are the odds?... Anyway, I take it that you'll be building your model in sunnier climes. This happens to be my building season, precisely because of the weather. It keeps me inside out of the rain.

Good luck with your Bluenose. It's a good model to get into the hobby with. If you have questions, just drop me a line.
