Hey Dennis, good to hear from you. It's not resolved yet, but seems to be on the right track. Good to hear from you. Don't freeze it off....got out the shorts and T shirt yesterday, nice to sit on the veranda and watch the sunset yesterday....sorry to rub it in, but the south is hard to beat.....

Looks good Augie. Worked in the yard yesterday---shorts, T shirt, sun and 75 degrees. Yes spring is getting here...finally. Let's hope winter is gone or going.

texxn5 reacted to Force9 in USS Constitution by Force9 - Revell - PLASTIC - Revisiting the classic 1/96 kit
    Folks -

I thought I'd turn some attention to the half hulls... Up next was the tedious task of filling in the holes for the port covers.  I won't be fitting gun port covers on my build.  I filled them in with .040 x .040 Evergreen strips cut oversized for ease.  I then came along next day and snipped them cleanly along the edge.  I'll cover with filler and sand flat before painting:

I also decided to improve the air ports along the berth deck.  The Revell kit comes moulded with some small oval ports, but the credible sources suggest small scuttles instead.  Note the air ports in the Corne painting:

Chappelle notes in his American Sailing Navy book that " the frigates were all fitted with air scuttles on the berth deck... The scuttles had solid covers hinged at the fore side..."

We know from Constitution's log dated September 1810 that the air ports were added:
"Caulking gun deck -- cutting air ports for the berth deck."

I simply glued some .010 x .080 strip over the existing ovals and added some of the small Jotika eyelets as hinges.  Tough to properly represent the hinges at this scale, hopefully these will look fine after primer and paint:

    All fun stuff.

Looking good Patrick, and I like the new toys  I need to buy a few new ones myself...

The Charles Morgan's keel also came in multiple pieces.  I'm thinking of cutting out a new one out of one solid piece also.  The multiple pieces are probably ok if glued correctly, but I think a solid piece will give me more comfort.  Not sure why MS does their keels that way.

Managed to get a few things done before Spring drives me outdoors

Firstly, I talked about thinning the bulwarks.  The first two photos show the 'before' version.  You can see the thickness of the bulkhead frames, combined with the outer planking, gives me an overall thickness of 1/4" +.

This needed to be brought down to an overall thickness of 5/32" at the caprail and 7/32" at deck level which is seen in the next two photos:

The transom had been previously done.

It was then time to add the cap rail to the transom.  Although it may have been possible to do this with one continuous piece (I tried but couldn't), the kit provides two laser cut pieces to handle the curves and a third section is added to the center.  This worked quite well although I need to work on the seams a bit.  They are actually perfectly smooth to the touch, but not to the eye.  Here it is depicted from a few different angles:

Finally, the quarter galleries are making progress.  The first layers have been added.  There is an overlaying layer and additional vertical area to be added.  But I'm pleased so far with the arrangement:

The interior areas of the QG were stained before it was closed up.  Not much will be visible once completed but this was a good time to get it done.

That's it for the time being.  Everyone grab your favorite beverage and sing out a toast to the long-awaited Spring, 2014!

Yes, we have Harbor Freight out here.  We call it the 'Chinese Store'.  I have gotten good service out of their $89 scroll saw.  Don't put much stock in their hand tools......I kind of like the ones that last 2 lifetimes (like those I inherited from my Dad).

Popeye and John, a dual build was not actually the plan, however, this is an interesting possibility  as I am already remaking many of the kit parts for Connie.  I do have two center keel pieces and cutting and finishing new bulkheads would not be too terribly hard with some new toys. If I officially decide to do so, I would start the other build in the scratch build forum. I don't think the hull sizes are that far off. From what I can tell without any heavy research, the ships have the same length and beam but the United States has a poop deck.

On with my progress so far today. I managed to cut out the slots for the bulkheads. The slots need some fine tuning still. I also got the 1/16" sanded from the top of the center keel piece to make up for the planking to go on. Two new toys I have are a belt sander and a spindle sander. I live by the saying "Ask forgiveness rather than permission" so I purchase these today to facilitate efficient sawdust production.

Next up will be the widening of the bulkhead slots and and construction of my building slip. If I get the time, I may post some more progress later.

I'm also doing the Revell U.S.S. United States.   in those plans they have the hull stripe as yellow,  which is what I'm going to do.  on my first build,  I did it white.   looked good,  but I think the yellow will add to the build nicely.   the Revell kit doesn't have the split gun port lids....this would be detail....too big for Revell to ignore.  they have them as full lids.   I haven't been in the box recently......but I don't recall a figurehead.   I wanted to get the Connie kit as well,  but the admiral kinda went hay-wire on me.....so I guess that's a bust

the Revell United States kit is a spin-off of the Connie kit........I wanted to see if the United States was larger.  she was a bit bigger than the Connie.....mostly in the stern area....the addition of the poop deck and additional living spaces.

oh....oh!  I hope I didn't plant a seed.......but really,  you made that keel......you have the original one......it would be nothing to make up some extra ribs and hull parts.   the President and the Connie mirrored each other close enough.....it can be done.  whatever you choose to do,  I'm sure you'll have a fun time with it.   your amassing some really good info there......your well on your way!

Another quick update tonight. Not too much done, but I did get to break in my scroll saw. It cuts greats and the variable speed is invaluable. What did I do? I cut out the overall keel frame piece. I also started transcribing some of the lines from the plan copies to the piece itself. You'll notice a small 1/16" strip of bare wood at the top of the piece. This will be cut off so make up for the 1/16" planking material as the plans had that line marked as the top of the gundeck.

Tomorrow I am going to get the bulkhead slots cut and get the rest of my lines marked. Who knows... Maybe I'll get a little more done, but this is competing with other projects now that the weather has turned nice. I still have to cut and veneer two sets of cornhole boards with the block O for Ohio State. Oh, I also included a picture of some reference material that arrived today, It should be a good read.

And I have some questions if anyone feels like fielding some answers. Were the gunport lids in two parts in 1797 like they are today? And from what I can tell, the deck planking wasn't nibbed into the waterways... Is this correct? I have also noticed some discrepancies between sources on the shape of the wales planking... Were they most likely straight planks back then? The admiral of this shipyard also thinks I should leave some exposed framing to see the gundeck... Any thoughts on this?

Popeye, I like the new avatar. I wanted to precisely locate the plan lines onto the false keel. I can use the plans to provide tracing lines to directly inscribe the plan lines to the false keel. The cutout panels won't suffice for inscribing the lines and also because the false keel comes in three pieces. I didn't like how the pieces fit together when I put it together almost a year ago. I had bought another piece of ply but this ended up being warped and the reference lines weren't lining up as neatly as I would have liked. I'm happier with this effort so far as I really plan on pouring my soul into this model.

why are you cutting another frame center {keel}?  is the original one warped?..........or are you creating an armada?

dropping in........definitely the kit!   after seeing how well you did the Niagara,  I'm sure you'll do a great job on this one.   what your doing right now is pretty interesting.......although I tend to use the parts panels to trace out the parts.   for whatever reason your doing this,  it's gotta be cool!

Al, I will have to look for it on Amazon and order it. Thanks for the heads up on it.

Just so you all don't think that I haven't been thinking about ship building, I have a small update. I went to my local Woodcraft store today and found a 1/4" sheet of birch plywood. I have to say that it doesn't have the grain I'd desire to plank with but the quality and rigidity make it perfect for a false keel. I also managed to pick up several blocks of decent boxwood to carve various fittings from. I haven't even cut into this wood yet and already I like it better than basswood. At any rate, I drew a straight line on the plywood and cut out some plan copies of the false keel and adhered them to the ply using rubber cement. Tomorrow I will have to break out the scroll saw and cut this big sucker out. As always, thanks for looking in and I appreciate any and all comments (including the critical ones).

    Thanks for asking Tex.
Indeed my Conny is in waiting, needs attention, but I have been busy, nevertheless.

I had another big birthday and we decided to spend a few days in the sun of Hawaii. Did a lot of hiking, climbing, whale watching, snorkeling and drinking mai-tais around the pool. The admiral is still complaining about her sun-burnt feet (who ever puts suntan lotion on those things down there?)
Then there was the mini-mill I just got from Little Machine Shop. After careful practicing with this new toy, I am getting the hang of things again. It has been many moons since I had a crack at running a milling machine.
I will post more details about my current project with that toy shortly.

At least the Conny gets some visual attention since I had to move it to our dining room table to make room for other stuff.

John, the small lathe is on the wish list. I'd like to be able to construct the capstan and other parts from scratch. The 48" lathe I have will not do the trick. I'll probably just see if I can find something close and if they need modified then so be it.

In case you forgot what Chuck's cannon look like, here's a photo from my log:

    http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/3371-usf-confederacy-by-augie-ms-164/page-6

They come in 2 sizes, nominally labeled 1 28/64" and 1 11/64".  I took the measurements from 3 of each gun and have given you the average, in inches.  There is very little variation.

    1 28/64 gun:

LOA (breech button to muzzle)                  1.4615
    Muzzle diameter                                         0.1760
    Breech diameter                                         0.2245

    Trunnion diameter                                      0.0595
    Trunnion length                                          0.3835
Distance, muzzle face to trunnion              0.7315

    1  11/64 gun:

LOA (breech button to muzzle)                  1.1780
    Muzzle diameter                                         0.1435
    Breech diameter                                         0.1800

    Trunnion diameter                                       0.0325
    Trunnion length                                           0.3195
Distance, muzzle face to trunnion               0.5865

That should cover what you need!

John, thanks for stopping by and welcome aboard. It's a virtual world so every seat is in the front row. If you're bringing beer I figure I'll request some bourbon then. The scroll saw will definitely get a lot of use. I need for the weather to warm up so I can put it through it's paces. Tonight I'll use my hand saw to start cutting out slots on Connie's false keel. On the advice of other's I ordered Commander Martin's book, A Most Fortunate Ship, and I found Ironsides! the Ship, the Men and the Wars of the USS Constitution by Charles Brodine Jr. I also was given a link to some valuable resources online from Navy records. The link is http://www.history.navy.mil/USSCTour/frDrawings.html. This has many drawings on it so I shouldn't have to order the CD ROM from the museum. The resources are piling up and I'm already starting to lean in favor on some decisions. I'm thinking the five window configuration is going to be what we'll see on my finished model. I've also found a rendering of the original figurehead courtesy of this website: http://www.civilwartalk.com/threads/winter-storm-hercules-in-boston.93938/. I'll guess we'll be putting my carving skills to the test.

I did, at 1200 dpi it managed to keep the font readable. A couple of years back this wouldn't be possible on a home printer.

So back to the more mundane cabin building. The doors have louvered openings, the rest is pretty straight forward but involved a lot of testfitting. alle the bulkheads are assembled off the model as this was easier to build.

It's getting pretty crowded on the deck and there is more to come, a pantry, the bitt's and pump's
