You might save some money, if you look in a catalog of instruments for a veterinarian's armamentarium.

I prefer a mounting board to prevent the small thin sections from breaking while carving.   Everyone works differently.  But sometimes it achieves the same result.  Whatever is most comfortable I guess.

your carvings look fine to me Chuck. but i have no idea how you can finish them whilst still on a mounting board, how can you get the roundness at the edges, as i said on my post i dont use mounting boards, heres a pic of my Vic stern carving, it is slightly less the 1/32 thick but not much, as for the finish i just scrape my blade sideways to smooth it out, when we are dealing with carvings as delicate as these we have to reach a equilibrium to are own satisfaction, and by the way i dont have big fingers

Oh, and I forgot.... I promised before a picture of the carriages under the deck... It will be barely visible in the end, but I know it's there... and now you guys too

    So far so good..

After a lot of sanding I was ready to the wales on the right (starboard?) side. With balsa wood pins would be pretty much useless so I resorted to use rubber bands and some tape to set the wales in place. I used  CA glue sparingly on the bow and transom, just a bead to make sure they would hold.

With the hull faired, I decided (wrongly I suppose) to glue the wales... I got a bunch of pink cedar strips lying around...

But I was afraid of not being able to curve them properly. I saw a couple bending jigs and tried the best with a plank of styrofoam, a side picture of the Royal Louis (covered in tape so it wouldn't glue to the paper) and a few ball-point pins. No need for water or steam as they are really thin.

A redimensioned side view of the ship to see if it would fit...

    So far it looks good...

As for the gratings, I tried to make them in wood, but even the smallest I could do was so off in terms of scale that even I who don't really care for scale in this size wasn't pleased.

So, improvising as usual, i just printed the gratings....

    Some more details added

the same for the second deck (still need to paint the stairs red like the parisian model).

I also started building some more detail at the transom.

Yes... It's my first build... It's all pretty messed up but I'm loving it... I'm even considering doing something bigger if it turns out "acceptable" in the end... The problem with this scale and all improvisation is that I'm spending a lot of time thinking about the next steps or ways to correct the mistakes I made in the planning...

After a few attempts, I think that the deck planking was not so horrible...

The hole you guys see in the middle section was the fruit of my illusion to add some real miniature grating      ... All the gunports were also painted red. Due to the small size, I think I'll have to use CA glue to secure the bow planks in place, so instead of wood, I carved/sanded a plastic piece (to make it easier, I think...).

The same was done with the other decks...

With a bit of improvised weathering (yeah everything's improvised!!!      )

Thanks for the nice words Jesse, but I'm afraid watching the process would be about as entertaining as watching grass grow.  Very slow process indeed for sure.

Here's another tip for wood carvers.....
After doing the rough carving, and then "refining" the detail to the point that it is beginning to appear fairly acceptable.... take two or three close-up photos of the piece using different angles and light reflections.
Then use the photos to mark areas of the carving you want to re-visit and work on, either to clean up or change the shape.
Then take some more photos, and go through the same process again.

Point is, the human eye simply will not pick up on the type of imperfections nearly as well as the camera.
I must have taken a thousand pics of the carvings I created for the SOS project.

    Cheers.

I have been getting some good fre time and moving along.
There has been a lot of work on the wheel house and I have framed all the windows with plastic sheeting behind.
The biggest mistake was that I glued the 3rd level on back to front and had a big job removing it and putting it right.
Some damage was done but I hopefully rectified it.

Just thought I would show the display cabinet I made to display my projects.
In the top left corner is the model of the Sybiac made in Vietnam and this was the ship I migrated on with my family when I was 5 years old.
In the middle small bay is my first model I made called the Port Jackson and then below is my second construction, this is a Botter boat I brought back from Holland.
Top right hand corner is the Souvereign of the Seas by Agostini and will be worked after I finish the Mississippi.
Below this my Endeavour which I completed last month.
Hope you find this of interest.I find this stuff very relaxing work.

Well finally the stairs are done.It has taken me some time to finish these and I still am not satisfied the way they have turned out ,however I have learned that the more you try to correct things the worse they come out so this my final go.

I have followed LADon's lead and put framing around the supplied cast windows.:this was done as the cast windows did not fit in the cut outs supplied by Artensia.

I dabble in bonsai as another hobby, and this Japanese vendor came very highly recommended by folks on the bonsai boards that I frequent.  Great quality tools, excellent customer service, and very fast delivery from Japan (on the order of less than a week).

While on their site, I noticed that they offer a full line of various types of tweezers.  It's been hard for me to find good tweezers for modeling.  I think I've bought and otherwise gone through about a dozen tweezers, and really only have one pair that seems to do it for me.  So, I bought a few from that website figuring I would try them out.

Wow, the quality, feel and fit are fantastic on their tweezers.  Much better than what I was trying from vendors like Micromark.  A good chunk of their tweezers may larger than what we need building model ships, but they have a few shorter ones that work very nicely.

Anyway, just thought I'd pass their name along in case there are others that use tweezers a lot and have had a hard time finding good ones.  I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just a very satisfied customer.
