    LA SANTISIMA TRINIDAD   1769 / 1805
    Hola amigos:
    Saludos  Liberto

His books are excellent.  I would highly recommend his more recent book, where he displays some more refined techniques, and where the pictures are in very high quality color:

    https://www.amazon.com/Building-Miniature-Navy-Board-Model/dp/1848321864/ref=la_B001JP2ALM_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1479145996&sr=1-3

I have to say, I always thought that I would jump to 1:48 scale or bigger on my future scratch builds.  After reading his books and seeing his work, I'm rethinking that.  It's astounding the level of detail that he is able to create at the 1:200 scale or thereabouts, at less cost for materials, and less space in the workshop and home.

That one is great. The same holds for the other Reed-books. Quite some overlap in techniques shown, bur all of them very informative.

Not too many build logs you see of this ship. Great start.
What material is that hull made out of?

Hi, I have now started the planking to the decks and have started on some of the superstructures. As well. I have attached a photo of my progress with the superstructures but still work to do on them.

    Hi all
I have managed to find a bit of time to start off my build log. I started the build about 6 weeks ago or so, I took a few pics of the model as it stands at the moment. Sorry about the quality, they were taken on my mobile in my garage. I have started on making some of the cabins etc and will update hopefully on a regular basis.

My experience with Caldercraft  is that the instructions and drawings are good.
I also think it depends on your native language.
If it's English then a kit from UK, US or other English speaking country are likely to be better.
It a kit comes from a non English country the instructions have generally been translated and that is a difficult process with technical phrasing etc.

I know there are exceptions to this and I'm sure members will point then out, but I believe it's a good rule of thumb.

Please welcome and thank Wood Project Source for becoming a sponsor of Model Ship World.  WPS supplies milled wood sheets and strips along with carving blocks for many hobbies.  Their specialty is Alaskan Yellow Cedar Sheets and Carving Blocks.  Other species like Yellow Heart, Purple heart, Butternut, Applewood, Dogwood and Mahogany are soon to follow.

They also carry the staples for our hobby like Boxwood, Swiss Pear and others.  They are just finishing up their new website so please have some patience with them as they continue adding more wood species and products to their online store.  They have many more than I listed.

I have personally bought from them many times as they are close by and I gotten to know the owner.  I have bought some Yellow Cedar and Boxwood from them and will say that I am very happy with the quality of the wood.  They have fantastic prices and they are the lowest I have seen for some wood sheets.

Please join me in welcoming them as a sponsor of MSW.

Visit their site and check them out.  I am grateful they decided to become a sponsor and didnt hesitate after I asked them about it.

So true Michael.  You have described exactly what I will be doing as I continue forward from here.  Sorry if my whining and moaning came across as being without hope.
Like I said earlier, I admit that I have long been spoiled by Chuck's clear and precise rigging instruction script.

Actually, I'm quite sure I'll figure this thing out.
    Thanks as always.

Dave there are lines and blocks on the drawing....what more do you want?
Seriously they do look rather spare. Understanding the functions of the various lines and how they are used is invaluable for setting up the rigging on any ship or boat. The early ships of era that you are modeling must have been rigged in similar ways to the later rigs. is it possible to take the information from the more modern rigs and extrapolate backwards to the paintings and artwork of the ship?

All spars now hanging from their halyards.....

Mixed emotions for me at finally achieving this major milestone.
As much as I am excited to be able to begin with her running rigging, I am admittedly intimidated by the aspect of going forward without a clear set of plans..... specifically, the belaying points.

I am plowing through all of Doris's final pics looking for any clues.

We all know, she will eventually become fully rigged - one way or another.

    Hi Dave
When I rigged my Sovereign, I need this book.
(THE RIGGING OF SHIPS: IN THE DAYS OF THE SPRITSAIL TOPMAST, 1600-1720) BY Anderson, R. C.(Author)Paperback Mar-1994This book is very good and I have no problems with belaying plan.

Hoping to hang the final four spars to her masts today.....leaving three to go on the bow sprit.

Finally taking a serious look at just how pitiful the plan sheets really are regarding the belaying of virtually all of this model's running rigging.
Guess I am completely spoiled by Chuck's thorough guidance in rigging.  Makes me really appreciate the time he puts into his description scripts.
Just look at this miserable mess....

King Chuck mounted and ready for a fight.
Guess the figurehead sculpture cleaned up fairly well.
I do not want to hear that the horse looks a little bit like a donkey. That is a camera angle thing I didn't notice until after I posted this pic. I'm just glad I do not have to make a living with a camera.

I also added the little lion laying in front of the steed.
I've got to do some cleaning up and adding some hind paws to that little figure.......looked ok until the camera told me otherwise.

While waiting for the figures to dry, I began hanging the lanteen yard.

Back to a little bit of rigging.... no crows feet on this one.

Beak extension .... used a small nail to reinforce this joint.  Once painted, I think the joint line will blend in perfectly.

Figurehead roughly shaped.... just removed from the oven..

Can't say I'm real happy with it at this point.  We'll just wait and see how it cleans up.

Guess I've put off the figurehead sculpting long enough.  King Chuck sitting on his royal steed with raised sward is kinda intimidating, to say the least.

I'm just playing around with some Sculpy for now, as I need to get the scale right on the first pass.

Also, I have known for a long time that the beak has got to be extended by about 1/2" to accommodate this figure.

I turned to my favorite material for creating parts that will be painted.... plastic (pvc) faux wood grain Vientiane blind slats.

First anchor shaped, assembled, and painted....
