  1. I've been 'stealing' space on other threads a bit too often lately so it's time offer up info on my scratch build project. I used to own a full size Fisher 34 motorsailer 1986 model and decided last year that it was time to make a 1/12th size copy. I thought it would take about 6 months to build! I bought the plywood for the keel and frames in September last year. The new launch date is about April 2021. I have come to accept that this build is a sort of 'labour of love'. I have built a many different model aircraft and sailplanes through the years but only one or two motorboats in my early teens (55 years ago!) The build of the Fisher was going a bit slow in the winter/spring so to have a yacht for the summer I built a Krick Comtesse (mostly ABS plastic !) in the spring and launched that in July. It would take some time to post a build-blog backdated to sept 2019 and not many will be interested in such a long-winded process so to begin with I will only post a few early photos and a few later photos of the build. I live in Norway so there's a bit of time difference to many of the other members on this site. Regards, George
  2. Hi Andreas, on some 1:1 RS1 photos the hull finish looks very matte. I wondered if your hull was painted/sprayed gloss? or have you just shined it up with car polish?! A nice shine looks good on a model -even if it's not as the original. I look forward to seeing more of your building photos when you get back to "work". Regards, George
  3. Hi Bob, many thanks for the info'. I thought I answered you two nights ago (2330 here in Norway) but I see this morning that it was not sent. I have sent you a PM instead so I don't clogg up Sundt's own building thread with my painting problems. Regards George

Hi Bob, I though I sent you an answer last night (2330 in Norway) but see now that it was not sent. Just as well because I thought later that I should not really be discussing my airbrush finishes on Sundt's Colin archer thread.

I used Tamiya gloss white acrylic on my Fisher 34 (34" radio controlled motorsailer) but could only get a silk-matte finish. This was the first time I have ever airbrushed anything (and I'm now 69!) so I don't really know what I'm doing!

After spending some time Google-ing about airbrushing I think that I did not spray on heavy enough and maybe with a too thin needle for such a large area hull. The spray was drying too quickly after application.

When I spray my Billing Colin Archer hull I think that a silk-matte finish will look right so I should be able to get the required finish on that. The hull is ready formed in ABS plastic and is in fact already silk-matte! So maybe I only need to spray the anti-fouling area from waterline and down to the keel! Maybe just polish the white section a bit  20200813_170957.thumb.jpg.43433efdf9ebd72cd31850e28cc14d60.jpgand leave it unpainted.

Thanks anyway for your info, stay safe,

    George

      Hi Bob,

I'll try to find a suitable CLEAR gloss topcoat . I don't think my cheap-ish airbrush can accept a wider nozzel but maybe I can  buy another one with a wider spray pattern. There's now a lot of 'woodwork' on the hull as you can see from the new photo but that's varnished so It will not show if a bit of clear gloss gets under the masking tape.

I've had a look at Pen Duick, beautiful yacht. Many thanks for the info'.

      Regards, George

My local hobby shop has 1 Hobbynox Ruby airbrush in stock; .8mm needle ( the first I bought was .3mm). They also have Tamiya X22 Clear Gloss. So with new inspiration from you Bob -who never gives up- I'll be rigging up my home made spray booth and having a new  attempt at "more-gloss-on the-Fisher project".

I have a sort of build-blog on the  Model Boats forum in the UK but I'm in here often to follow Sundt's Colin Archer build quite often so I will try to open a thread here and post a few  words occasionally. Also, I can't keep writing stuff on Sundt's own post! Nor Bob's!

  5. Thanks Carsten, some of the photos of Andreas' hull look as though it has been polished nice and shiny :-)) The full size RS1 seems more like a silk-matte finish. My kit is pretty old and I think it may be even more matte due to ageing. Maybe I'll try airbrushing in gloss acrylic. That will give a silk finish if I don't spray on too wet. I can test on the inside of the hull first! I hoped to see some photos of yours and Andreas' RS1's on the water. Are you both still building? Regards, George
  6. Question for Andreas or Carsten....Does the white part of the hull actually need to be PAINTED white? Or is it only necessary to paint the 'antifouling' (hull red) at and below the waterline and the red stripe at the top of the hull?
  7. Yes Sarik. Don't think they say the scale -just length. It is 9" =ca 25cm (incl rudder) x 11 beam. They make only the plastic hull, the rest is up to you! It's not quite the right shape but I think it's an easy way to get a 'Jolle' which looks OK. Send photo of the bare hull beside the CA hull. Regards, George
  8. OK thanks Andreas, I see that one of the deck sheets has a small flaw in it (a round, red-coloured mark in the middle of the foredeck) so maybe Billing just threw in a new one without taking out the other. I have done the first few steps on my CA RS1 but that lives in the 'kjellerbod' most of the time. I am keen to get the Fisher 34 built so only had a few short sessions so far on the RS1. I hope next summer will see Fisher and RS1 side by side, The hulls are quite similar in shape. Sende bilder av RS1 'jolla'. Regards, George
  9. Hello again Andreas, I hope your CA RS1 build is still progressing. I have been looking at my 414 kit in the cellar store room (kjellerbod!). I see that my kit has TWO complete sheets of shaped 1mm ply for the deck. I think this must be a mistake? Can you remember if your kit had 2 complete shaped ply sheets for the deck? I think the part number is '18' . Regards, George
  10. Lovely planking Andreas, I think my deck will be 'look-a-like' plank using pencil lines. I have done this on my Fisher 34 decks and considering it's the first time I've tried it, I am very pleased with the result. I also did some varnish tests. I have not stained the Fisher decks but oiled them with many coats of Owatrol D1. Later I varnished with Owatrol D2 to seal them properly. Silk-matt finish can be acheived by only using D1 oil. I stained the bulwark top capping with teak stain and then applied the same D1 and D2 treatment. D2 is supposed to be flexible and non-cracking when completely dried. I must say I am not an expert at this and have no experience with deck preparation. Although I did use D1 oil on the bulwarks of my full-size Fisher 34 in 1986! George
  11. Any of you thinking of building a "Nordlandsjolle" which the RS1 uses as a dinghy (jolle) to row ashore with? Asked the museum but they only had a drawing of a "Lofotjolle" which seems to have a higher bow. There are some photos of a "Nordlansdjolle" on the CA RS1 gallery. I think I have seen a RS1 with a dinghy on tow on Youtube for 'Colin Archer Modell Yachts'. George
  12. Hi Sundt...and Carsten S, I have not looked in on this site for some weeks. Nice to see your RS1 in build. Great detail photos to help others (me?) do the build. I have not started mine yet (also a 414 PS). The Fisher 34 I am building has taken much longer than expected. I am also building a Krick (Robbe) Comtesse yacht while waiting for glue or paint to dry on parts of the Fisher 34. Not allowed by SWIMBO to build 3 yachts at the same time in our apartment! So have to finish the Comtesse first to make space to start the RS1. It will be great to see photos of both your Colin Archers sailing together (errrr.... 2 meters apart) during the summer. I am in Stavanger so too far to drive just to have a look. Happy sailing, stay well, George

  14. The Billings kits seem generally to have quite scanty instructions. BUT, that did not stop me from buying a Colin Archer '414' kit in January! A chap in Stavanger, Norway had bought it about 10 years ago and did not get around to starting the build. He decided to make some space in his storeroom and sell the kit. I have built the stand and stained/oiled it. I plan to start other build-processes around Easter 2020. I am in the process of building a Fisher 34 motorsailer from Model Boats plans service. The plan is actually for a Fisher 46 aft cabin so I have modified it a bit. Started last September. I owned a Fisher 34 (full size) many years ago and have often thought of building a R/C model of it. Some photos of the construction progress are on the Model Boats forum in UK. I look forward to following the build of your Colin Archer. Hope you show the internal sail winches and control lines. I have bought 2 Graupner winch-servos for mine. Plan to let the mizzen sail be free and only restrained by a light guage elastic. I've seen one or two 'build-bloggs' on the www. from two different modellers in Germany. They are quite critical of the scanty instructions....though the kit is not aimed at first-time builders, so maybe this explains it. Both managed to build great models in the end. One guy only took 4 months to complete. George, Norway
