NAZGÛL got a reaction from edmay in Paint brush verses air brush
For me brush works better on a wooden shipmodel. I work with washes and drybrushing alot and also pastel powder. I use the airbrush once in a while when I need to add a thin coat of varnish to make the pastels stick.

I paint everything before assembling them. You need to be sure of the look you want early though.

But this is preference and imo there are few wrong or rights in modelbuilding.

Ah, no problem with the link. I just have a problem with youtube commenters that talk down nice videos. Ive seen to many examples of people -even small kids- showing something they are proud of, and then someone thinks its funny to bully them in the comment field. It makes me sick. But I liked the video.

Hey all! Last days I've managed to do some more details. The railing was less problems to get in place than I imagined. It fitted very well to the shape of the ship. It was a good advice to do it last Nigel as its fragile by it's nature. The ropes holding the anchor and the others hanging will be corrected when the model is positioned on the stand and I can tell how it should hang.

And with this it turns out I'm done with the model. It's a mixed feeling as I'm happy to have reached my goal but also feel a little sad as I'll miss working on it and talking to you all about it. It has been a great inspiration and source of knowledge, so thanks eveyone for the help and support!

These will likely be the last outdoor pctures of her and I will now start on the case so more to come.

Hey all, here is an update finally. I've done the other side of the mainmast and made the portside of the mizzen mast. I found it difficult to imitate the sagging curves of the original, but it was easier on the mizzen as the shrouds are angled straight up. First a reference pic I took at the museum:

LOL sorry to dissapoint but I just love the halfbuilt look. It triggers my imagination and I also like the look and proportions it gives her. A fully rigged model would fit the case, but probably look a bit cramped.

I have continued on and cut the remainder of the deck beams. It was a slow job due to the parallelogram shape of the aft beams because of the deck sheer. These are inserted through corresponding slots in the hull. These will be slid out and the remaining deck clamps fitted.

    Kind Regards

P.S.Excuse the dust,my compressor gave up the ghost the other week so I am currently without an airline for dusting off

Began tying the ratlines today. Most people say this step is a test of patience. I have the patience. My problem is with lyme disease the way you have to sit, lean & reach to do this is very painful. It reduced me to tears & back to my sick chair well cushioned with pillows 3 times today so this is as far as I got.

In the past I always made my sails look as if they were catching a full wind. Thinking I'll do them a little less than that this time. Been looking at pictures of sails under lighter winds & how they are shaped. Using watered down white glue to shape the sail. Not sure if I'm satisfied with this first attempt or not....

FINALLY got all the sail stitching, reef bands & points & bolt ropes done. Now I can start putting them on the yards & get to the next step that will take me forever- the ratlines.

Starting bolt ropes. Had an old spool of rope left over from a build a long time ago. Sewed bolt rope on first sail. Still nine more to go.

Thanks Grant & John. And thanks CaptainSteve for the tip on the reef points. I modified it a little. I'll try to show the steps I'm taking to tie the reef points. My camera doesn't get as close in as I would like I hope it show it ok.

First I pre-tie a knot in a line of sewing thread. I pull this through the reef band with the sewing needle - pulling the knot up to the sail. I cut it off on the un-knotted side with enough extra length to do some tying. Then I do the same thing all over again from the opposite way (through the same hole) each thread knotted on one side passing by each other through the sail with a knot on each side. Now each side has 2 threads hanging out - one knotted & one not knotted.

Began adding reef points. This isn't as easy for me as I thought it would be. Having a lot of trouble getting the knots on both sides. I can get one just fine but tying another knot on the other side right up against the reef band it very difficult for me. Many times I get the knot on the other side too far from the sail & I have to cut it off & start over.

Sewed the reef bands & extra cloths. Next time I do sails I will not use anything thicker than thin handkerchief material. The sails look real good with these details but ended up a little too thick where extra cloth was sewed on. Next will be the reef points & boltrope.

Been working on making & sewing on extra cloths & the reef bands. Used the Fray Check & a hair straightener to form & press them into shape. Making all this on has taken weeks but it turned out to be good timing- my computer crashed & I am now sharing one with my daughter. Things were different & getting all my stuff & info & programs onto hers so I could get back to posting pics on my build log has taken me a while to work out. The reef bands are formed & ready to sew on.

Washed the pencil marks out of the sails. Hung them on the front door on a sunny day. The sun coming through the glass storm door heats the space between the doors & dried them very quickly. The stitched lines turned out looking fine to me.

I am now working on the reef bands & other cloths sewed on the corners for extra strength in the high stress areas where the sail was pulled on by ropes/rigging. Pics coming soon.........

Thanks Buck! I used straws from an old brush to get it in scale. CA glue it to the stick and then trim and it to shape. I did two tests before I managed to get it right.

And yes, my fingers where hairy afterward.

I'm in the same group as popeye: untill now i did not realize that you would stop after setting up the lower masts.
But, in fact, it helps setting your model even further apart from all those out of the box stuff.
I've said itbefore:this one is amongst the best Wasa models i've seen ( if not: the best)
