Cheers mate! I'm bound to get some misstakes as it's new for me, but I hope they will not be crucial.

Hey all! Ok so I made the ratlines for the starboard side of the mainmast. Lots of beginner misstakes, but it was quite enjoyable work. To be honest shaping the dead eyes and metal parts for them was more challenging on the nerves as there where many stages. Once these are on you have a result. I like that as it gives energy to continue. I decided to do not go by a template, but did them freehand, by the eye and tried to look at the reference instead. I did end up with more rows then the original at the museum.

I still need to weather the ratlines and give a light coat of varnish to hide the CA but this is where Ï'm at now.

    Grating construction Part one.

Not only do I want to produce  more historically accurate gratings,I wanted to produce them in Pear to match the rest of the model. As far as I am aware A.Banarov is the only producer of grating kits in Pear but ordering some gratings from Odessa would be a bit extreme, even for me

I decided that the ledges and battens would be 1.5mm wide with holes 1mm square. This gave a scale hole size of 60mm by 60mm.The way I have decided to produce these should enable scale holes for Royal William by adjusting the centres I work to on the miller.

The first step was to make some sacrificial jigs. These comprise of some mdf cut to a suitable size to allow easy clamping on the miller table. On to this I bonded some pear strip machined with 1.5mm wide slots at 2.5mm centres.

The next stage was to bond some 1.5mm by 2.5mm pear ledges into the slots. When dry the top was faced off in the miller and then perpendicular slots machined 1.2mm deep into the ledges. The gratings will be thinned in depth further when the battens are glued in place.Keeping everything oversize to start with, eliminates any deflection of the ledges whilst machining. It is my intention to curve the assembled piece after assembly and removal from the jig as everything will be far too thin to allow the curved face to be sanded on.

    To be continued

    Kind Regards

Hello my friends and fellow followers

Well, the fun with my Caroline goes on. After my Holidays with my dog I did continue to build up the deck furniture and to prepare eg the cannons and anchors. But at the Moment I have to wait for additional parts like double-blocks for the cannon rigging, for some Wood as I want to create my own chain-wales. I ordered the parts but they are not delivered. But I expect to get them today. The cannons come out quite good, I did burnish the brass muzzles.

Next will be to seal the decks with a semi-gloss colorless lacquer before I install the cannons and do the cannon rigging.

It is so nice and satisfying to build this kit...

    Have a nice time

    Best wished ... and: Cheerio

    Hello my friends

just a little update from the past few days. I just build up the deck furniture (?) like the different bits, chimney, gratings, stairs etc...

Now as I learned a method to "carve" the bollards I am quite satisfied with the result. I use a triangle file and not longer a knife. I am sure you guys just laugh about my "discovery" - but I found out this by myself... almost a little bit proud *blush* :D

The last three pics are somehow experimental as I love to play with photos/photography. Perhaps they look a bit strange... hope you dont mind

I am on tour with my Caroline for almost five months now (approx 250 hrs minimum)

Cheerio, cu - and as always: Comments are welcome as I want to get better...

    Max

Yeah, it's great Keith. Last time I went to Stockholm I stopped by the museum and took pics of the things that was upcoming in the build.

Here's a bigger version of the picture so you can see better.

Steve, sounds like it could work but I'll go with the clove-hitches and CA on a toothpick.

    Thanks Tim!

Mark, ah, yeah I get what you mean. They look like this close up on the original:

I agree the twists would not be very obvious at this scale.

Keith, To me it looks like a piece of leather or fabric used as a cap yeah. Here is another showing that area, not as upclose, but pretty clear:

Thanks for the suggestion Steve! Yeah I found a thread here suggesting that. I'm pretty sure I would mess up the shrouds with that method. And for me its something of an aesthetic decision, like adding nails to the hull or not. Or not adding any chaulking between the weatherdeck planks.

I don't really agree that you would not see any knots where the ratlines cross the shrouds. I see it even on smaller reference pics.

I do agree that the knots in this scale are slightly to big, but I prefer that to no knots. I hope to get a glose color match between the shrouds and the ratlines and that this would make the knots less prominent.

    Cheers!

    Ahoy Dragzz

I am a big "fan" of the hobby heat gun for forming planks.

For unruly planks, I soak them and then wrap the area in a wet paper towel then aluminium foil and nuke them with the gun. Just don't burn your fingers on them

If you use PVA glue it will also debond joints (wet the area first) I use a paint brush and apply water and heat to undo my screw ups.

I figured  it was a leather cap to keep water from wicking into the shroud end and causing rope swelling.

In that second picture Its hard to tell. I saved the large photo to the desktop and expanded it but it pixelates a lot, but it appears that the shrouds a served all the way up. HUM,

...also on the lower shroud where they wrap the deadeye and are seized, it appears wormed, but not parceled or served. double HUM.

Wonderful photos Matti. You definitely have an advantage with those photos to build from.

On that last picture of the shroud... is that a cap of some sort on the end of the shroud rope end?

That's a great detailed picture of the deadeye wrap and seizing and the ratlines look smaller then the seizing lines.
The shroud also appears served above the last seizing, did it rub the railing on the way up? Do you have a pic further up the shroud Matti, I'm curious how far up the serving goes....

Did you consider to use a mixture of the white wood glue with water (50/50%) and then fix each knot with a small drop of this mixture using a small old brush
consider that CA might break after several years and this is a very hard glue connection which can also break after touching once you are finished.

this is my experience as well from several experienced builders in the Netherlands, we try to not use CA on shipmodels except when all other glues cannot be used
I am using CA only to make a needle from the beginning of a rope so this makes it a lot easier to have the rope in small openings from blocks etc.

I'm finally done with the channels and its details. Also did the collar holding on to the bowsprit.

Matti - rope is made by twisting several strands of thread together on a rope walk. You would not see this twist on simple sewing thread without a magnifying glass. Maybe someone else could explain it better than me.
