Really wonderful, Druxey. In 100 years or so (and than I am very very old) I hope that I can also build my models so good.

Continuing the assembly of the stem..

I used temporarily spacers to fit the Knee of the Head, which is only 10'' thick, to the stem.

Next I shaped the Knee of the Head using the info David Antscherl gives in his books. After this I glued the completed assembly to the stem. Therfore I used brass pins and the earlier descriped spacer. At last I shaped the competed stem to the hopefully right thickness.

In the moment I work on the lower apron and the rising wood.

I've finished the "Disposition of Frames" drawing.

I am not quite happy with the position of the timberheads between station line 17 and 19. But this is the position I got from the As Built plan of the Fly.

Next I will built my building board and start with the model.

Today it rained all day, so I had enough time to finish the design of the cant frames

The Bollard Timbers and Hawse Pieces are missing to complete the planning of  framework.
The individual components and the frames I'll draw later during the build.

Next, the construction of the two-stage slipway is on the ToDo list, then I can lay down the keel for the model.

    Welcome on bord, Antony

The completion of the hull of my control model in the region behind the last frames has attracted much longer than expected.
When planning the last phase of the construction I realized that the body plan of the original drawing and therefore my reconstruction at the top of the last two frames is too narrow. So back to the drawing board and the frames 19 and 20 newly constructed. The hull at frames 20 is now about 1 mm wider in the region of maximum breath than originally. With the help of several buttok lines and the new water lines I have also redesigned the transoms

I haven't add all changes on the test hull, so you can see in the pictures the not entirely harmonious course of the lines.

The first step of my little project -the reconstruction of the lines- is complete.
In between, I have asked myself several times whether the construction of the half-model was even necessary. After the problems in the reconstruction of the transoms and fashion pieces, that define the shape of the stern, have identified, the construction of the test model was more than worth. I am happy to have the mistakes now and not found during the construction of the POF model.

In the next few weeks I'll construct keel, frames and all other components that are needed to build the hull. In autumn I like to start the construction of the POF model. Until then, one last picture which shows the side view of the test hull.

Thanks Johann, druxey, Mike and Nils for your nice comments and all others for the Likes

Next I've installed all bulkheads until frame 20 and the filling pieces.

Then my favourite pastime - sanding

Finally the shell has been completed. It is quite delicate right now, as the last half strake is only edge-glued to the strake below. However, the pink stern is quite strong, even at this stage.

Next will be installing the keelson, followed by bending in the frames. The plug, as you can see, has been beaten up quite a bit in the process of planking.

The sheer strake proved challenging in more ways than I had anticipated. First, this strake tapers to a point at the bow. Finessing this was not easy. Secondly, I had a minor mishap. While working with the hull off the plug, my sleeve caught the unsupported aft end of the strake and it snapped off. So, a re-do. I flattened and re-assembled the broken plank to show its peculiar shape. Wes mentioned a U.S. quarter, so I've included one for scale.

I will not remove the shell from the plug again until both sides of the aft ends are complete and united with the outer transom!

Thanks for all the kind comments, and the input about the painted cutaways.

I've decided to go ahead and paint the cutaways red :

The pump tubes are tapered at their tops, and have a re-inforcing band around the extremity. I turned these from brass tube. I didn't bother adding this detail to the unseen Starboard tubes :

I've also made and fitted the Hatch Coamings for this deck. These are 6" wide by 5" deep. The Coamings (the fore-aft pieces which are also named this way) have a 3" by 2 1/2" rebate for the Gratings. The Head Ledges (the athwartships pieces) are rounded slightly to match the round-up of the deck. Each corner is rebated into it's partner and rounded to the level of the top of the planking :

Note that I have a temporary "beam" beneath the outer ends of the Carlings for stability. This will be removed when I have finished planking this deck.

Well, a challenge it has certainly been. The aftermost plank of the sheer strake is unlike any plank I've hung before. The pictures describe this plank better far than I can write about it. There was a lot of shaping required to get this plank to lay down properly. One can now see the beautiful sweep of the sheer properly.

Now all I have to do is repeat this on the other side!

    Tom,

I have the drawings from Alex for the Sphynx and since this week for the Anson. A few years agos before I start my Swan class sloop I thought a longer time to build HMS Sphyx as POF model after Alex drawings, At that time I don't have enough knowledge to reconstruct the frames.
I don't know the original drawings so I don't know where he got the information for the swivel gun mounts on his drawing.

I don't found information about installed swivel guns in Winfield, but I think that she had them until 1794. At this time the ship got carronades.

The deck is finally planked on the first model and I've started on the second.  Another shipment of boxwood arrived and I hope I bought enough to finish this time.

I did a little more work on the cam frames and started on the spokes for the flywheel.

Soldering the spreaders for the cam frames.

Completed cam frames.  The cams were 24" X 24", the distance between the cam frames is 24 1/2"

    Finally, one deck complete.

Flywheel spokes fresh from the mill.  The channels for the spokes in the flanges were of different depths on the port and starboard sides requiring them to be cut slightly different.

The outer face was beveled slightly from 5 inches at the flange to 4 inches at the rim.  The mill could only cut one side so the bevel was added later.

Test fitting the spokes.  The mill cuts the interfaces so cleanly that there is almost no hand fitting necessary. This will save a lot of time on the 96 paddlewheel spokes when I get to them.

    Thanks Greg and John.

They're open to show the chain Greg. See pics below.

I'm half wondering whether I should paint the cuts red to show that they are indeed a cut-away (and the same with the cut-outs in the aft end of the well, also any future cut-aways). Thoughts anybody?

I've temporarily fitted the four chain pump tubes to make sure I have all the angles etc correct. They fit quite a bit better than the full model's tubes . :

The outer tubes needed a small cutout in the mast partner to get the distance between the tops correct. I didn't do this on the full model and had a few issues later on. TFFM doesn't specify this :

Thank you Druxey, George, Pat, Albert, Maury, Greg and Wes (welcome back) .

Pat, I'm taking far more time and effort in getting every small piece spot-on, as it's a lot more visible than in the full model. I'm also adding a bit more detail.

I've made up one of the Chain Pump Sprockets - the other one will be covered by the Cistern Hood and therefore invisible. The bars are silver-soldered into the PE wheels :

I've also made up three lengths of the Chain, again using pieces from the PE set. The longer one will fit over the sprocket at the top, and the two shorter lengths fit into two cut-outs I've made into the lower ends of the pump tubes :

Time for a progress report. The planking has slowly been spiled, cut, bent and hung as far as below the sheer strake. The first picture (arrowed) demonstrates the bevel for the land of the next strake. This was formed using the sanding stick mentioned earlier. Note that the bevel alters - and disappears - as the hull form changes.

The second photo shows the transition of the strakes at the stern from hooding into the stern post rabbet to running out over the tiny transom. Only two strakes end on the transom. Forming the junction of these two strakes neatly was tricky.

The last photograph shows off the elegance of the hull form. At this stage I bevelled the stem so that the planking appears to flow out of it. After the sheer strake is added there will be clean-up and minor adjustments to make.

    Christian,

I agree.  Alex's plans will be nice to work to.  Also Admiralty plan ZAZ4009 which shows the body plan with stern board decoration, sheer lines with inboard detail and figurehead, and longitudinal half-breadth for Camilla; and ZAZ3978 a disposition of frames drawing for HMS Sphinx and HMS Vestal.  I'd like to know why he has swivel gun mounts on his drawings.  Do you think he's uncovered something in the ship's logs, or is this, as I mentioned in my post, something at a captain's discretion.  Maybe I'll write and ask him.  Christian, how is it you know of Alex's draughts?  Did you build a model of the HMS Sphinx?

    Tom
