I just joined the forum a few weeks ago. Your build is great and the pace is faster than anything I've ever done. I look forward to future posts.....Milo

New development!  The Lauck Street Ship Yard has announced that they are going to begin to produce the POF Armed Virginia Sloop kit in 1/32 scale once again.  The kit will be exactly the same as the kit in this build log, except the parts are laser cut rather than CNC cut.  If anyone is interested in a fun but very challenging kit, this is it!

Slow progress.  I've installed all the beams, carlings, knees and ledges up to frame 5.  Frame 5 is just sitting in place.  Because of the bulkhead that will soon be installed, I need to install the stove on it's brick pad next.  It's a close fit, and I will likely first make the hatch with the hole for the Charley Noble so that I can glue the pad to the deck and the stove to the pad with epoxy once the alignment of the stack is right.  While the long cure epoxy is curing, I'll install beam  #5 with it's carlings and ledges, glue the hatch in place and make any final adjustments before the epoxy sets up.

In order to I create a little more contrast on deck, I remade all the hatch coamings in rosewood.  I will used boxwood grating in the hatches. I made the Charley Noble (stack) out of brass, blackened it and glued the stove and grease tray to the brick pad.  I set the stove in place, along with the stack to test the fit.  Perfect.  Next is the glue up of the stove and beam 5.

Back from vacation with the family.

I started framing the main deck forward.  I also built some wooden crates for the hold as cargo.  I'm painting the metal bands on the powder kegs copper colored right now.  They will go in the magazine.  These little details won't be easily seen once the deck s framed in and partially planked, but they are fun to build, and I know they are there!

I’ve been working on the stern.  I didn’t like the look of the swiss pear.  I wanted more of a contrast with the boxwood.  So I removed the pear planks and replaced them with walnut.  The walnut is much darker and I like the color.  In the process, I re-did the ‘openings’ for the stern windows, I re-painted the windows, AND I re-printed the name on the stern.  All in all, I’m pleased with the all of the results.

I added the beams for the quarter deck as well as spare wood to support the opening for the stairs for the officers.  The stairs were built and added.  After a few tries, I think the stairs came out O.K. (even though I had to use swiss pear to get the size of the sides and steps right).  The color is not so important here.

Its been a long time since I made a post; due to problems and interference by 'life'.
I started to plank the outer upper hull and realized that I first had to deal with the stern area.  The transom and counter must be in place before planking.  I had a lot of plans for the transom, and had to compromise on just about all of them.  And this is before even getting to the fancy carvings.  The result, so far, doesn’t look too bad, although it needs more sanding and some cleaning up.  Also, once the transom is attached to the stern, I have to insure it’s compatible with the counter.  The planking I did so far needs more sanding, as the close up photo makes obvious.  But I think I’m on the right track; with a lot of challenges yet to come.

I am playing around with the deadwood assembly for the keel. The deadwood is made up of 4 parts glued together. I plan to blacken the joints between all the parts to simulate caulking, but I also think that some of the component parts of the deadwood can be broken down further than in the kit. For instance, parts SD1 and SD2 were probably each made up of smaller parts on a real ship. I'll simulate this by scoring lines in the parts and darkening the scoring with a pencil to simulate caulking between the parts. Here's a shot from the practicum showing the deadwood, and my proposal to alter it's appearance . What do you think?

I've started gluing up the frames. Frame 0 is amidships. The frame's number increases going forward from there. Frame A is just aft of Frame 0, and the frames proceed alphabetically moving aft from there. Frames 0, 1 2 and 3 are straightforward and require no beveling. The numbered frames forward of these (#4-11) require progressively more beveling as the bow is approached. The same is true for the lettered frames moving aft. The first couple after Frame 0, Frame A and Frame B, require little or no beveling. The remainder (C through Q) are beveled. I finished and glued up the first 4 frames, 0 through 3. I'll also begin gluing up the other frames, as well as constructing the building jig and keel. My frames are maple. The deadwood, rising wood, keel, stem and stern post are all cherry. I'll add a rosewood or ebony false keel. I will also blacken the joints of all the deadwood parts to simulate caulking. I think the contrast in woods will be nice!

I'm beginning my build log of the Lauck Street Shipyards POF kit of an Armed Virginia Sloop, an admiralty style kit in 1/32 scale.  The kit arrived in it's box and it is heavy!  The contents are high quality hardwoods (primarily cherry for deck beams, knees, carlings etc. and hard maple for the frames) with lots of strip wood of various species for planking, trim etc.  There are also a large number of 3-D printed parts; this being the first kit to offer them. There are 5 sheets of plans, each 36" X 24" included.  I may alter the kit, and add additional details and possibly substitute some different woods, but I'm basically going to build it out of the box.  Comments, criticisms and suggestions are welcome!

Here is the box, and some shots of the maple and cherry billets containing many of the parts.
