Bug - nice to have you on board.  I think I'm below the $1 mark

Colin - thanks for kind words, I'm learning from your wonderful Pandora

Mobbsie - it was Andy that put me onto that.  Anyway, I owe you at least a couple for the 'mouse' help...speaking of..

    First Mouse:

I've been procrastinating over my first mouse on the mizzen stay.  Size was estimated from various drawings.  Followed Mobbsie's method and made the mouse out of wood dowel and glued onto the line which was then served.  PVA glue was brushed onto the wood to keep the serving line in place (this photo is the second attempt and you can see the fuzz from attempt 1)

Finished moused end...Lever identifies a pretty small eye vs the instructions which call for a much larger one against the mouse.  The stay was served a little beyond the mouse which per Lever can be done "according to fancy".

Mizzen stay in place...it looks OK to me but as always would welcome feedback if I'm off track before committing to this.

Got my replacement parts from JoTiKa today. Great service from them as I only spoke to them on Thursday.

Next step for the build is to gradually shape the bulwarks. Using a mug and large clips at the moment. Once they are roughly the correct shape I will bend to the bulkheads on the ship.

    Excellent progress today!

Glued the crosstree assemblies onto the fore and main masts and replaced the shrouds that I had previously removed. Rethreaded all of the shroud lanyards and just need to seize the ends around the shrouds. I'm pretty much back to where I was before the accident. After that it's back to finishing off the ratlines again. Never thought I'd be glad to be back to ratlines....!

Crosstree assemblies are now complete. They're not perfect but i'm very happy with how they have turned out. I just need to paint both assemblies and then glue back onto the fore and main mast.

    Getting there......

Quite pleased with myself! The scratch building is going pretty well so far.

Made two of the crosstrees. First cut pieces of 2mm x 15mm walnut to rough size, I then used a file to file the angled ends and then the notches to size.

The trestletrees were a little more complex. Fortunately, I was able to rescue a single piece from the wreckage and use this as a template.

I cut several pieces of walnut to approximate size and then pinned the trestletree to a piece.

I was then able to cut and shave the wood to shape using the template. Managed to complete three successfully so far. Two more required.

Good for you Jim, those pieces look great, you should be pleased.  My experience was that the walnut can vary greatly from piece to piece, some seem to split by just looking at them but you seem to be managing just fine.

Coppering has now been fully replaced and the hull looks so much better now. The new plates don't actually stand out that much from the old plates so I will let them be and see how they look in a couple of weeks.

Now working on re-rigging the shrouds. I had two chainplates snap on the starboard main channel, and all five went on the port channel that was torn off the hull. The easiest way to replace these has been to use 0.75mm black thread in place of the deadeye strop, and tie a double knot to the deadeye to simulate the strop. The loose ends are then fed through the channel and tied to the chain plates. I have had to replace these as well as they were bent out of shape.

Used a little jig to create new chains from 0.5mm brass wire by looping several turns round two nails and then clipping down the side of one length.

Cheers Mort! Happy new year to you.

That image above does show the crack in the stem piece. Possibly more obvious as it is full of filler.

Once the coppering is finished it will be gone....!

Channel has been re-pinned and glued back in place.

I am now replacing the copper tiles along the keel bottom and at the stem. Port side is almost complete.

Time to sign off for the new year. See you all in 2014!

    Ok. Question time!

I have added ratlines at every fourth line to help keep the shape of the shrouds, and I have worked my way up to the bar that the catharpins are rigged against. I have glued the bars in place with a bit of CA. Now my query is how have people gone about rigging the catharpins in place?

The plans would seem to indicate that they are wrapped around the bar and then seized in place. However, upon trying this it is damn difficult to get the tensions correct without seriously warping the shrouds and also actually getting the seizing to work without it all looking massively out of scale. The rigging book I have has shown that catharpins would actually be created by splicing a loop at each end just short of the bar and the seizing through the loop to the bar with some thinner line.

    Recommendations would be most welcome!

Stergios, this is where I found the base - www.historicships.com, I went with the mahogany.  The wood for the cradle got from www.woodcraft.com.   Shipping is pretty high from both.  The cradle was made by using the contour gauge against the hull to get the shape and then cutting out with a fret saw - basic woodworking but I haven't had to do anything like this since school so was a bit trial and error

Bit more progress last night. I have airbrushed black any areas that are likely to be visible through the deck. I need to have another look at the Haddock plans though to confirm as they are different to Caldercrafts Ballahoo layout.

Added mast supports from a little scrap wood and used balsa to make fillers at the bow and stern to aid planking.

Finally, the stern has been built adding the supports and pieces of the transom.

Next step is to soak and shape the bulwarks to shape and add the false deck.

Coming together nice and easily so far......
