Sjors reacted to usedtosail in HMS Speedy by usedtosail - Vanguard Models - Scale 1:64
I guess I should call this build the classic Speedy kit, as Vanguard is about to release an updated version which is quite a bit different in construction.

I have been planking away on both sides of the hull. I added 10 planks to the starboard side, then added the garboard planks. I used a wider plank for the planks next to the keel as this will allow me to use an even number of full width planks down the middle of the hull. I then added five more planks down from the top of the hull on the port side, which is where I am as of today.

These planks cover all the area on the port side that won't be covered with copper tape. I will now add the remaining five planks starting at the keel and working up, so if the last plank is funky shaped it will be covered in copper foil.

Hi Sjors! It has been some time. My mojo has been seriously lacking on wooden ships lately. I do still have Connie and pick her up from time to time to see if the bug bites me again. With my youngest almost flying from the nest, my wife and I should be moving in a year or two and that should come with a much larger work space to spread things out. I'm positive Connie will be resumed soon after that.

    Best,
    Patrick

side rails are now fitted on both sides, although they look symmetrical it also looks so very tatty, for me thats been the most frustrating part of the build, with little to show for a weeks work

Gunport sides had to be prepared in a parallelogram shape to fit perfectly. Using the extensions of the gunport spacer as a template, I marked the side strips and shaped them with a disc sander.

I started the assembly of the gunport headers on the gun deck by completing the waterways. Like other modelers, I used spacers to keep the headers at the same height. I will add the cannons with full rigged carriages instead of dummy cannons on the gun deck.

I continued with the bow framing. Before glueing the gun deck I cut the openings for the gratings, ladders and masts on it and started the waterways.

Thank you so much for the likes and comments my friends.

I glued the bulkheads and put spacers between them. I always put these spacers as a precaution against warping the keel in later stages.

Hello friends. I am here again with my new project 1:76 scale USS Constitution model. Of course, it will be a build from scratch again. While making the model, I will use the Constitution book as well as the kit plan of Model Shipways. Model Shipways' kit does not include gun deck details, but I will add the gun deck and its details to my model. My current thought is to make full rigging equipment except sails, but I don't know what the time will show us because it will be a long-term project. Again, as always, I am open to constructive criticism, comments, suggestions and recommendations. The pictures show what I have done so far and I'll continue to share as I progress. Kind regards.

It will have the exact same masts and rig as a 64-gun ship of that period. The only difference being the lower masts are cut a deck shorter to take into account the height difference.

Originally, they gave Indy the mast and yard plan of a 50-gun ship, but that proved almost disastrous, so was changed back to a 64 set up very soon after initial commissioning.

    Beautiful job.
Question from Anja, how do you get those tiles so shining.
    You clean them?

I've noticed the same thing and therefore am checking as many sources as I can going forward.  The Practicum is a great leg up over going at Conny with nothing other than the plans provided with the kit and the build logs here by such as yourself provide broader perspective as well as inspiration.
    Thanks

The framing of the Stern and Bow are done.
For the bow framing I have redo it 3 times because i don't like it how it was.
    It goes to far outside.
So i think I'm all right now with that.
Then the waterway is also in place.
I think I'm gonna start planking at the top of the frames because they are very fragile.
I have broke all ready 8 frames.
    Then the gunports.....
Also a question for other Conny builders.
I see at other build logs that they place a deck.
I think they make them by them self because they want fully rigged guns?
Picture are so sharp that you see every thing on it.
Keep in mind that it has to be planked and painted.
    Now pictures.

    Thanks Peter,

I have take a look at that practicum but it’s to expensive.
I will do it with the resources i have.
I will redo the filler blocks but first i’m planking the upper hull.
The top of the frames are easy to break.
When that is done i can put her up side down and have more space to work.
It’s balsa wood so easy to work with.

    day141-4
have spent the last few days trying to get the side rails to look right, although they are nearly there, they are far from brilliant, the pain for me, is getting the last section over the after three ports where it ccrosses the banding, ten attempts so far without joy, the yellow has to be redone as the banding has moved slightly,
all in all, im loving this, build, any fault there are are due to my stooooooopidity

    Sjors,
I did a little research here at Model Ship World and found a discussion on the use of wood filler.  Someone recommended Goodfilla Wood Filler. So, I went to their website and read some FAQs.  See below for a question about how to more-or-less fill larger spaces.  (lay it on 1/4" at a time).  Since you're planning on planking first, you have the luxury of filling the gaps a little at a time over the course of many weeks.   This seems like the easiest way to get the job done.

From Goodfilla FAQs (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – GoodFilla😞
Q: Can you use this to mold new pieces for repair on furniture as you would with Bondo? Would I add wood glue for increased strength?
A: We would recommend our powdered "Filla-In-a-Bag" mixed with wood glue and water mixed to a clay-like consistency. If using a solid mold, add wood filler incrementally in 1/4" layers allowing each layer to dry before adding the next. Pouring GoodFilla into a mold is not ideal since the filler dries via evaporation and needs air to dry.
