  1. Welcome Paul! And good luck on the Polaris! As for tools. I found my trips to hobby stores every few days to be almost as fun as the build itself, you'll definitely rack up a collection by the end!
  2. Hello all, I'm pleased to announce the completion of my first model ship! The Albatros is done as far as the kit instructions are concerned. I'm still mulling over the idea of barrels but I'll sit with my victory for a while before adding anything. Thank you all for the support and assistance, this ship would not look as passable if it hadn't been for this forum. Drum roll... Tadaaaa Here's a photo dump! I started this whole project as a means of connecting with/mourning for for my dad, I didn't realize how quickly I'd grow to love it. I have a lot more respect for the intricate works that he made in his lifetime, and I can't wait to eventually make something that gets close to his level. He'd be proud of this one! I am very much excited for my next build, which will be the HMS Beagle. It doesn't get here for another week so in the meantime I may start a build log for a gingerbread house and enjoy the pleasant updates you guys post! One down, many more to come! Thank you all again, sincerely. PS i want to post a list of all the things i wish I had known going into the Albatros build, as well as instruction mistakes/miscommunications I encountered!
  3. Thank you Alfredo, you're too kind! Looking forward to seeing your Albatros come to life. I am planning on making a post with the things I wish I had known beforehand, and all the mistakes/misinterpretations with the instructions I've ran into throughout the build. I should be finished with the build tonight! Woohoo! Best, James
  4. Well said Rick, I've been learning so much from this build; half from this forum, the other half from mucking something up. After the initial panic of a blunder, it actually becomes quite satisfying to problem solve and (hopefully) mend it. Thank you for the kind words. Cheers, James
  5. That weathering looks fantastic, and don't worry too much about the bulwark, the rail will cover it up!
  6. I've rediscovered this lesson too many times (most recently last night) while working on the Albatros 😂 That steam engine looks spectacular Rick, well done. Stay warm through the storm!
  7. I don't have enough experience to have a favorite method but judging by the rest of your build, whatever you choose to do with the sails, you'll do it perfectly! I will have to reference this log when I attempt my Beagle build, your photography is wonderful.
  8. Welcome! Fantastic looking Endurance, I do hope you make a build log for the Constitution, it'd be great to follow:)
  9. This makes the injury 100% worth it. All too true, I nabbed an HMS Beagle kit from OcCre during their black Friday sale and I'm ecstatic. It should arrive shortly after finishing this boat up! Thank you Geordie! Thank you all for the stories, and I hope all of your weekends were relaxing. I have gotten some good ship time in and passed the last big hurdle, which was attaching the forsail and mainsail to the brass rings which were already on the masts. I can think of a thousand different ways to have gone about this build to make this particular job easier. I made this way harder than it needed to be😂. I ended up weaving thread in between the brass rings and the sail at equal intervals. Pain in the ***. But with that over with, everything else is straight forward! Only a few more sails to attach! I am dreaming about my next build already, when I take on the Beagle Ithink I will try furled sails, I do think the sails hide a lot, but what shows looks fantastic. I believe my next post will be the finished build! Hip hip! Best, James
  10. Exciting switch! Looking forward to seeing the planking. As a display that picture you posted looks very cool; as a bonus if you decide you don't like it, you can just move the boat elsewhere!
  11. Wow Keith this thing is really starting to come together. I keep having to remind myself how tiny Billy is, you have a steady hand!
  12. Aye aye, Another day of rigging! And quite the productive one at that. Many of the blocks are now in use rather than hanging limply, and it is looking quite spectacular. As finicky as it is, this may be my favorite part of the build. And one sail has been put in! Not catching too much wind yet, max speed of 1 knot. I was injured while working on the ship today, I forgot I had my needlenose tweezers in my lap and went to get into criss-cross-applesauce pose and the tweezers managed to get a good distance into my foot! Lot of blood but nothing serious. Has anyone else experienced injury in this dangerous hobby? Would love to hear the story. The one thing I'm dreading between me and the finish line is somehow getting all of the brass rings through the sails attached to the fore and main masts. I have a feeling it'll be a pain in the butt. Looking forward to everything else though! Thank you all, James
  13. Ahoy all, Rigging has well and truly started! I have finished the standing rigging, and have loosely attached everything except the royal yard on the foremast. I am labeling each runoff to attach to pins later, it's already feeling a bit crazy. I am very much enjoying this part of the build! Only a few pages left in the instruction book! This feels like the home stretch but honestly I have no clue, I will miss working on it as soon as it's done. Thank you all! Best, James
  14. Hello Sigbjørn! Before you post more here, you should start a ship log, this is still a member introduction post. It took me a while to figure out the layout as well. For the Soleil Royal, you should click on "Kit build logs for subjects built from 1751 - 1800" category. From there, press "Start New Topic", then tittle your log: "SOLEIL ROYAL by Sigbjørn - [manufacturer name]- [scale of model]" That way you can post all you want and people can follow your build! I'll be on the lookout for your build log! I would love to follow when you make it. Best, James
  15. I did the same thing on my OcCre build, only found that page halfway into things, I ended up being lucky that everything was put where it needed to be😂
  16. Shaping up to be quite the unique build log! Excited to follow along.
  17. Just ordered the Beagle from Occre, if I can do half as good as you I'll be happy! The ship boats look great.
  18. I remember coming across your build log a few weeks ago, looking forward to your next post Meekes! I spent a long time looking at those ships as well, the mortars on the La Candelaria look so good. Along with the Beagle I picked up the tool organizer/work stand combo to make life easier.
  19. If you didn't know, there looks to be some good deals on OcCre's website this week, worth checking out if you're looking for a new kit like myself! I had to talk myself out of the Belle Paule, but the Beagle seems reasonable for my second ship! (I am actually still trying to talk myself out of getting the Belle Paule, it's so beautiful and heavily discounted 😭) Best, James
  20. Looking good Danny! My condolences for your father, I got into ship building to take after my dad as well. I have found it to be a great way to mourn. I'm excited to follow along on your build!
  21. Welcome Danny! Looking forward to following your first build, best of luck!
  22. That's very kind coming from the ratline expert, thank you Bob:) I'm looking forward to rigging time!!
