Jim Lad got a reaction from coalman in Leon by Doug McKenzie - FINISHED - a beautiful little brigantine
Doug, Underhill didn't have the plastics and fibre materials that we have now, nor did he have our modern epoxy adhesives or modern paints.  His insistence on everything being pinned was partly due to his distrust of the adhesives available at the time.

We also have the advantage of having a myriad of small and very accurate hand held power tools plus access to first class ready made parts if we desire to use them rather than make our own.

Jim Lad got a reaction from tasmanian in SD-14 by Kevin - Marcle Models - 1/70 - CARD - cargo ship forward section
I'm pretty sure the SD14's has MacGregor hatch covers - steel sections joined by short lengths of chain and running on rollers along the hatch.  They were pulled either forward or aft into the space at the end of the hatch and folded up on their ends as they reached the storage bay.

The (very old) photos below are of one of the shipped I was on as a cadet - MV 'Wollongong'.  In the one of her at sea you can see the hatch covers secured over the hatch and, as you say, virtually becoming a part of the structure.  In the second photo she's loading iron ore and you can see the sections of hatch cover tilted up and stowed at the end of the hatch.

Another small update at last - and the last one for a while.  I'm currently undergoing some intense medical treatment and won't be back at the museum (where the model resides) probably for a few months.

At least all the square frames are now fitted.  The next job will be to do quite a bit of fairing and sanding before I start with the forward cants and hawse timbers when I can get back to work on her.
