The second try . As its a little known ship, i include a picture of the original.
once the hull was done - having built it twice as the first one had a messuring error 🙁 - i started with the superstructure. As you may guess, i did it twice too.. first in aluminium then in wood. Mainly because the area for access to the rc ewuipment is so small, i had to go back to the drawing board. Still not ideal, but now it seems a good combination between access and being water tight.
the next big thing was the wooden main deck which is made from pear (?) 1.5mmx50mm planks. That took a while but i am happy with the result. So here next try with pictures, hopefully right way up.
cheers sascha

Hi all, hope i can get this to work. (The post).
Some years ago i started building this one. Hull is wooden frames, balsa planks and epoxy (w mats) coating. My toolset is a bit limited so all „handmade“ - as you will see with the missing accuracy. Better with next one. Also am trying how to post, so will stop here and try attach some pictures for starters. Will put one more later if this works.
ah, on the ship: light cruiser, built 1916 and scuttled 1919 in internment . It will be RC, so i have to build lightweight as max is 5.5kg. So far with engines, batteries, servo etc it will reach a calculated 4.5kg , so plenty of reserve.
so here the first pictures from when it began 😎
mmh sorry two are upside down . No idea why nor how to turn them around.

Just a quick update. More work on the superstructure and then start to work on the trim. Some weights are fixed in the hull, as its tricky to grt to some parts. But anx „ses trials“ will have to wait until 2022.

gieb8688 reacted to mog in PT 105 by mog - FINISHED - Dumas - 1:30 scale
Just shy of 2 years work, this my first attempt at the PT , I still have to trim out the edges , frame the box and build the case . My goal here was to depict a day in the life of the 105-boat moored at Todd City for minor repairs and resupply. Thanks to everyone for all your comments and support.

gieb8688 reacted to king derelict in Flower-Class Corvette by king derelict - FINISHED - Bensworx Virtual Kit - 1/48 - a log for the less gifted
This build inches forward at glacial speed. I find myself doing a lot of reading and planning on each step; much more than I would for a regular kit model. Partly I think its trying to decide how much of the generic Flower Class corvette can be tweaked to be a specific ship and then how to achieve it. The historical record is also quite patchy when it comes to detailed deck shots of a particular Flower. I think this may be nearer a scratch build for me than I am used to. Its very enjoyable but I'm not breaking any records making progress.
I planked the wooden foredeck and once the glue had set I scraped the planks smooth with a glass microscope slide. It is far too clean and now needs to be weathered with some grey and brown dilute oils.
I have filled the portholes and painted the steel decks. The 4 inch gun bandstand has been assembled and painted. Next task is finally shim the foredeck elements and build up some more details prior to placing them permanently.
Thanks for looking in

Got some work done today while manning the ship model shack at the Philadelphia Seaport Museum. I got the main ladderway, vents, and Naiad RHI boat started.

A couple shots. I will be redoing the name decal as well as the numbers. The ink bled a bit so I will be adding an additional coating on the carrier sheet.
I also believe the gun radome is reversed so I will need to fix it. Additionally the stabilizers had the paint peel off.

You did a really nice job in a short period of time and I'm sure the crew and attendees at the commissioning ceremony were impressed with your model even if it was as complete as you would have like it to be. Thanks for all the photos also. They stir up memories of my Coast Guard years from long ago.

It's a long drive from Florida to Bahrain for such a small ship!
Now you can relax and work on the model at your leisure.

The cutter left today for Florida. She will head down there before going across to Bahrain for her final homeport. She will likely never come back to the USA. The model will reside in Philadelphia at the USCG base once finished.

I think you did a very good job in such a short time. The model is already looking very good!

I made a huge amount of progress but alas was not able to fully complete the cutter by the commissioning date. The officers still wanted it there albeit unfinished. From a distance it looked good but overall I was pretty annoyed with my project timing. I also included some pics from the ceremony.

I got to visit the 1/1 scale model of the cutter today. I was in a hurry and will grab more pics when I can. I got the CO and XO to pose in one of them. The poster is for the commissioning day. It includes 2 of Tunnel's NFL trading cards.

Paint touch ups and I am finished for the night. I put a gloss cote on the mast. The deck was darkened and I am debating on using panels of sand paper to simulate non skid paint. I have some panels laid out in the pics. This is the first ship of a scale it feel comfortable trying this technique on.

Buff paint on a ship or boat is one of my favorite colors. Depending on lighting or weathering of a vessel it can look very different to the beholder. I use Apple Barrel acrylic paint colored Autumn Gold to simulate this. I then put in some acrylic gloss sealer in a couple coats to make it shiny. The mast has not been coated so far.

gieb8688 reacted to David Lester in HMS Agamemnon by David Lester - Caldercraft - 1:64
I mentioned in another post that a nearby fellow model builder asked me if I'd like to take on a partially built Agamemnon that his late father had started, but was unable to complete. I am happy to be the recipient of such a great kit. All the work that has been done on it is first rate, so it's just a matter of moving forward; nothing to be re-done. I'm really honoured that Peter Rumgay, a very skilled modeller, has entrusted me with his dad's unfinished project.
I going to work on this kit simultaneously with my Speedy project. I've never worked on more than one project at a time before, and so far I'm enjoying the process. The key for me was getting properly set up and slightly changing my modus operandi. In the past, (mostly through laziness) I usually had too much stuff piled on my workbench, so it looked like a hoarder's workbench, sometimes to the point of leaving only the tiniest workspace. That just wouldn't work this time, so I have cleared it completely. Fortunately I have a lot of room in my shop so I set up two separate tables, apart from my workbench, and have one table dedicated to each kit, including plans and all parts. and just move over from the table the immediate things I need at any given time and then move them back. This makes it very easy to switch projects and keep everything organized. I should have been this organized all along.
Here's the model as I received it.
It would appear that the first order of business for me is the second layer of planking and I've made a start.
I'm thankful for the other Agamemnon builders on the forum. I've been studying their build logs and I know I'll be turning to them again and again as I work through this very large undertaking.

gieb8688 reacted to B-Ram in Benjamin W Latham by B-Ram - Model Shipways - Scale 1:48
Hey everyone,
Sorry for the lack of posts, but I haven't had much progress other than fixing mistakes. I've been making some progress. I have gotten the stanchions in place. When I started installing the stanchions, I discovered that I had installed the planksheer incorrectly. So I had to cut the planksheer out, which left it unusable. I made a plank sheer and fitting it in. I'm making quite a few mistakes, but I am learning and am enjoying the build. I have also been doing some sanding on the hull.
