captainbob got a reaction from John Allen in Two Edwardian-type launches by captainbob - FINISHED - 1:48 - SMALL
Hi Lawrence, I haven’t done much but I’ll show you where I am now.
On boat number one I added the window plastic and mounted the clearstory windows. I added the prop and rudder, and the steering chain. All that’s left on number one is the steering station and a few chocks and cleats.
On number two I painted the hull white and added the flooring. On the bench in the foreground you can see the side windows for number two and the yellow card stock is the template for the front of the cabin.
That’s it for now.

The holidays are over, and finally it's time to get back to modeling. As if that was all there is to do. Before the holidays I did some work on boat number two, but never got around taking and posting pictures, so now it's catch up time. Here is what I did. Now to do more.

HI all,
I decided to put a set of clerestory (is that what they are called on a boat?) windows on top of the saloon. 44 little pieces of wood later . . . and here’s what it looks like.

Hi All,
Just a little bit more. There's still a lot of clean-up and the parts are just set in place. Also I need to do the roof and, oh yes, I still need to put a finish on all that bare wood. But here's the pictures for now.

David, I brush on two or three coats of acrylics I buy at the local craft store. I usually buy Americana brand. The blue is Primary Blue. The other boat will chang from white to Tomato Red. And then a couple coats of Minwax Polycrylic.

Thank you all for your kind words and likes. I’m kind of taken aback. Usually I build a specific boat from plans and pictures. These two are quite different in that I do not have a specific boat in mind. The hulls are pretty much standard, a little longer, a little narrower. But hulls are hulls. It’s the cabin where the creativity comes in. In every picture I saw the cabin was different. So I had to decide, ‘how many windows do I put in’, ‘are the doors centered or to the side’, ‘do I plank the inside or leave the ribs showing’. And then it’s on to the building. Each piece of wood is held in place and marked. Do I want it this long or should I make it shorter? As someone said in another thread, “The eye knows what is right”. And according to you all, my eye must be fine. I have to admit I am enjoying these builds. And I want to thank you again for the encouraging words that keep this old man going.

Popeye, I just wish my envisioning skills would let my know what is going on ahead of time. Then maybe I could figure out how to do it in my dreams, like you do.

Julie, Julie, Julie I see it all now. It reminds me of when I bought a boat with my brother-in-law. Since I was single, at the time, I moved aboard to pay the dock fees instead of rent. Guess who sailed her the most. Good try Julie.

Sorry Lawrence, didn't mean to leave you out. If you join Julie, Michael and me that would put someone in each corner on North America, North East, North West, South East and South West. Maybe we could all meat in Kansas. Oh well, on with reality. Been doing a little more on boat number two. I added the deck and framed in the cabin. I'm trying not to hurry this one but I'm getting anxious to start my next build already. Any way here are the latest pictures.

What a wonderful chess set. But I don't have tweezers small enough to move the pieces without knocking all the others off the board.

"Work went very slowly", he says. From hull to finished ship, that's all. well done.

There was no forced air air conditioning in those days, so they needed all the vents, and if there were an electric fan all the better.

I do apologize for my tardiness in updating this log. I have been in the process of restructuring my professional committments and, consequently, have neglected the more enjoyable of my pursuits. I have, however, finally worked out the likely method that was used to laterally stabilize the mainmast. The shrouds are passed inboard, not as in later vessels outboard to chainplates. The pendants from the mainmasts ( more later) are secured by tackles. This is more in keeping with the iconography of the period in mediterranean vessels. It may well have been different in the northern european vessels as illustrated by the drawings by the flemish master WA, which show chainplates. Certainly it would have been vastly simpler for me to secure the pendants outboard but, in shipmodelling, it is sometimes better to aim for accuracy rather than facility. Nonetheless, I offer this as a solution which is consistent with the scanty evidence.

Most of us would say, "She's just about finished", and a fine job. But I know you still have the inside. Can't wait.

She's a beauty. I'm always awed when I look at this ship. She's so much nicer than the 10 story monsters on the water today.
