    Dang - no pressure here

I used a couple of books to figure out the taper and arrangements - Underhill's Masting & Rigging The Clipper Ship & Ocean Carrier, Murphy & Jeffers Spars and Rigging from Nautical Routine, 1849 and Biddlecombe's The Art of Rigging.  Each is a good reference for different aspects of the masting and rigging.

Let me pull some info together and will post a bit later this morning concerning tapering etc.  As to the boom rest - the fore mast is completely square rigged so no boom rest nor gaff.  Only the main mast is rigged with a boom rest and gaff driver (spanker).

Here are a couple of pictures that may hel slightly.  I will go back and get the info on tapering and fittings a bit later today.

WOW Augie!   glad you were able to put her to right!  sad to hear you had to do some back peddling there!  look at it this way.....at least she didn't hit the floor {perish the thought}.......but your back on track now,  and that's all that counts!  great save!

thanks for looking in Bob........I know it's crazy......but I'm used to it by now.   compared to others here at MSW,  I'm still a relative newbie.......I think I've only been doing these about four years now {I lost track}.
I've started the logs......I can just pick them up later.  thanks for the good word.......and not to worry,  I can only work on one build at any given moment

    4 - 13 - 2012

I forgot what I was doing between the time frame.......but I brought the Gothenborg back out.

    4 - 19 - 2012

I did some small detail work at this time,  adding a little something here and there.  there is the gap between the aft deck and the balcony,  I decided to make a locker that will span the width of the aft deck.  I will need to make a slight change in the curvature of the balcony to hide this as well.

I did a bit more with the bow spirit as well.

I cleaned up the chain plates....prep for paint

I added extra wood to the fore chain plates, so I could put more of a curvature to match the hull.

thank you very much Anja.....I am really enjoying this build.   I had contacted Billing's to see about getting another decal sheet,   after ruining the eagle for the stern.   I came home today and found the envelope on my desk.

I also cemented the skylight in place on the deck.   I was kind of hesitant about gluing the dome on the base.....I thought that the CA might cloud the window maker.   though I was very sparing with how much I used,  I found that it wasn't affected by it.

before I stopped for the evening,  I did add one more bit for the deck......the aft boom horse at the stern.  I don't recall the proper name for this part.

Well... I did make it home friday evening... Just taking a brief reprieve... I'll be back up an building soon.. one thing about these winter meetings, although the day is dedicated to seminars and other stuff... the evenings are predictably.... um... well... let's say "lubricated"

Once I get my head back in it, I'll be going full tilt again

Thanks Joshukr,  but I think that's too much credit.......compared to other ships seen here......I am but an novice as well.  all I can say is:  to do a good job,  you have to truly enjoy the hobby......to laugh at your mistakes.......and strive to do it better than the plans your working from.

The method I used for the ratlines was the one detailed by Dan Vad in his Supply Build Log (indexed).

One of the things I did to help me in the process was source out very thin needles.  On the left is a 'standard' thin needle and on the right is a 'specialty' thin needle.

Views of the progress ... kind of like stop motion ...

As mentioned,   after I had finished posting,  I wasa bit miffed.  I didn't want it to look like the part on the kit.

this is not normal plastic.......certainly not a styrene plastic by any stretch.   looking at the underside,  I noticed the dimple in the middle.....looked like a good starting point....I drilled a small hole,  but not deep enough to go through.

then I chased it out with a larger drill

then,  using a new 1/2 inch drill bit and a freshly bladed x-actor knife,   I took out as much material as I could.

checking the thickness with my x-actor knife, the material was reamed out until I was satisfied.   then the windows were cut out.

I wanted to hollow out the base,  but the the delimma of the bottom occurred to me......that and I didn't want it to look weird.  so,  I painted the frame and the base.  the very top of the base,  I painted with a light coat of black......it'll just suck into the wood anyway,  and give me the  'nothingness' look I was after.

I let the frame dry for a bit..........and then filled the panes in with the window maker.

it was a quarter to three in the morning when I went to bed.......got up around seven AM.   I wanted to look at it,  but there was just too much activity.......dog wanted to go out.......brought the son to work.
passing by the coffee maker......I wanted my first cup......no time,  I had to get the trash out to the curb.  finally got that cup of coffee......and then I got my first look.

it was a little blurry.......I put on my reading glasses.

put on it's base,  I was quite satisfied with the results.   I's strong to da finich,  cuz I eats me spinach.....

    Teeny, tiny bits being blackened.

Back to the Cradle.  Here is where I started the painting process.  I'll try to remember the details but basically I laid down a diluted black undercoat using acrylic and then I threw all the rules out the window and started experimenting with oil, acrylic, gouache and enamel.

The 'green' here is oil base rubbed on and then rubbed off and left to cure for a day or two.

Went back in with 'Burnt Sienna' gouache and rubbed on lightly - notice how the previous oil base rub creates a blotchy effect.

Unifying the colour with a thin coat of either dark grey or black acrylic.

Weathering highlights added here as an experiment - better to call them 'mid-lights' as I was going to go over them some more.

If I remember correctly I actually rubbed in some black China Ink, very carefully.

'Silvering' of the surface - dry brush with acrylic gouache.

Partial removal of the silvering using very fine sandpaper.

And here is another view of the rudder with the hinge details painted.

that's in the plans Wayne........perhaps not the bevs though......I run a tight ship!  leave that for miller time

it can be done Sarah.......I have bev containers in my M&M build.......the dollhouse dept can be a good place to find cool things.  there was a time that I wouldn't frequent craft stores......but now,  it's a whole different story.   the jewelry dept.....stenciling.......just a few places where things can be found to accentuate the hobby.  gotta be careful of the colors though.......don't want to clash

dowel would also be a good material to make bottles and cans

Hey Popeye, glad to see the shipyard coming up to full speed!  The customer waiting for his yacht needs to understand that our working boats take priority.

Some weathering might be great and I know you'll leave no barnacle unturned.  But maybe the Cap'n had her reconditioned and only kept the old pots for their good luck!

Speaking of which, took the Base Commander out to Red Lobster for lobsterfest.  You are personally responsible for stimulating the US economy.  And I won't even send Sjors the check.

She's looking really good Popeye and those lobster pots are brilliant, a bit of ageing would look good, if you need an idea just look at Sjors photo, that should help.
