    Hello Sherry,

I agree with Steve, the captain's cabin should be the one with the open balcony so he and his sweetie can sit there in their rocking chairs and sip mint juleps and munch popcorn

Ref the deck colors, please don't make too dark, even honey maple can make it too dark for decks.  I like to see some contrast too and with the walnut for the hull planking that should look great.

    Cheers,

I would say something, but I don't have an answer to the question at all. You are right, I think you can definitely tell summer is upon us, it had gotten rather quiet of late.

    Hi Sherry

If I understand the layout of the HMS Victory, the Great Cabin ( or Captain's Cabin) was located at the end of the main gun deck and above the officer's cabin.

If the San Felipe is similar, that would put the Great Cabin as the one with the balcony and the officer's cabin would have the covered balcony.

    This is my guess....

This seems to be one of those areas that always causes the most pain for us. Either from a critical comment that this or that is not correct, which is a real stretch for me because not many of us were there to witness the "Real Way" or because we beat ourselves up for not doing research and correcting the "apparent error". That said over 50 years of making models both as a hobby and commercially I am my own worst enemy.

Sherry your model looks really super I am enjoying watching the build as it changes from one level to the next. Building a fully rigged ship is an enormous challenge, I am always awed by those of you who do it. One mast is enough for me.

    Hey Sherry

Some times you can't win for trying!

I totally got your Armada reference....and I have been chatting up a storm over whether the Serapis was this or that...Who says we have to build historically accurate models, it's about having fun and enjoying the build and results personally speaking. I for one, am building these for my enjoyment and what others think doesn't really matter. It's how I feel about it in the end. I hope others appreciate what I do but my hobby is my hobby.  When I build for other people, of course that changes things, We as builders are entitled to build any 'ole way we want! LOL

Carry on....enjoy and #3 sample for me!

Sample # 3  for me...not based on any one else's opinions, other than my own...I like the warmth and straight grain and red-brown tone

Thanks for doing this survey...it was fun!

I'm with you, old school, no needle threader. Never heard of one other than me! LOL

I use the same method of CA drop on the tip of the rope or line since ships don't have ropes!  I then cut it on an angle to sharpen it and then presto!...oops missed...try again...presto! There like that! LOL

Nice but you have to mess it up a bit! Way too clean! haha

PS If I may add my 2 cents worth on your changes! It's your model. Do what you like...as much as we try to make it as realistic as possible, it will never be exactly as the original. Of course on a site like this, people will way in, as I am doing now, and offer their opinions, some positive and some can be negative. (I am not saying whoever commented on the chain plate being in the wrong position was a negative comment) just saying you need to assess what is important to you. Can you fix the issue? How long will it take to fix the issue? Do you want to fix the issue? Will you be happy not fixing the issue? I think you are like most of us here. Yeah it sucks to have something pointed out that requires changing. But if you decide to fix the issue, all the effort will likely make you feel happy that you did it. Good luck on whatever you decide, and I'm glad you decided firewood was not the choice. If you had, you would have seen this Canadian over there so fast you'd think it was D-Day all over again. There i would be pleading with you not to do it! LOL

    Good luck on it!
    Cheers

Yes, the Endavor was a Barque rig in later years but was ship rigged under Capt. Cook,  She has slightly raised prowl and poop.  Designed as a collier with a blunt bow and shallow draft, not a real pretty ship is you ask me.
Here is it in need to some future attention.  I plan to start back on it after the Constitution is done.

    Hello Steve,
Here is a picture of my Hms Serapis as she is now.
There is still a lot to do and and a lot of things to talk about.
I wonder if it should not be better to start my own buid log to avoid confusion with yours.

    Hello All!

Time I started to be more involved in this forum. I started the HMS Serapis back in the late 1980's. A few of you may not even have been born yet!  I had just finished building the Charles W. Morgan whaling ship and wanted another ship model to work on at boat shows to help attract attention to my booth. I loved the story of the Serapis which is what brought me to purchase this kit.

    Here is that story:

The Battle of Flamborough Head was fought September 23, 1779, between the American privateer Bonhomme Richard and the Royal Navy HMS Serapis and was part of the American Revolution  (1775-1783). The HMS Serapis was a 44-gun 2-decked Roebuck-class fifth rate "frigate" captained by Richard Pearson. The Bonhomme Richard was lesser armed with only 32 guns and her captain was John Paul Jones. Serapis was named after the Greek & Egyptian God Serapis.

These two ships clashed at Flamborough Head, England,  on Septermber 23, 1779 during the American Revolutionary War. The ships traded heavy gun fire at which point the Bonhomme Richard lost most of her firepower but did manage to grapple the Serapis and bind the two ships together. Captain Pearson seeing that the Bonhomme Richard was sinking, he hailed the Bonhomme Richard and asked for her surrender, the famous quote by Captain John Paul Jones "I have not yet begun to fight" was his response. The battle raged on for another 3 hours giving time for the Alliance ( a frigate in Jone's squadron of ships) came upon the 2 ships and began firing at both. With the Bonhomme Richard sinking and being bound and tangled to her and unable to turn her own guns on the Alliance in defense  Captain Pearson surrendered the Serapis. The American's captured her and transferred her to the French who commissioned her as a privateer until she was lost off Madagascar in 1781 to a fire. Although and embarrassing event for the British, Captain Pearson was decorated for his defense of the convoy that she was tasked to defend.

The kit itself is as you can see over 30 years old. So no laser cut pieces. The frames were pre-cut as was the keel and that is it. Several sheets of printed plywood, pre-cut cannon bases, sanded blocks for the rigging, 5 different bundles of rigging, 5 sheets of instructions and a very small instruction page. The planking is double plank on bulkhead, with basswood for the first planking and walnut for the 2nd planking. Materials are of decent quality. A unique feature to Aeropiccolla kits of this time were pressed wood-fibre molded pieces for the stern decorations and lifeboats.

I have included at the start a photo of the finished product that came with the kit. My hopes are that I will end up with something somewhere near as nice!

Here is the first set of photos.

    Hi Sherry

I must have missed your posting when you mentioned your brother and daughter. I went back and I am truly sorry to hear about both! I am glad your sister is doing better and I truly hope your brother turns things around and makes a speedy recovery.

Just to add to your lighting thoughts, model railroading being another of my endless hobbies, they have simulated flame lantern or fire lighting accessories for between $25 to $70. Most come already wired and ready to hook up. And HO scale is very close to the same scale you are building your model at. Here is one such gizmo...

http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/mtr/mtr10010101.htm  George's Trains in Markham might be a source to try out. I haven't been following the model railroad stuff for a few years to direct you any better but they have been around for ages, since I was a wee one. LOL

The frames look great so far...great to see the decking go in. What are you planning to do for the deck planking? Please tell me you aren't going to mill those as well? LOL

The scroll saw was a great investment. I must have several days of cutting ahead of me cutting all the printed parts for my HMS Serapis kit...honestly, I am not stoked about it at all....I guess this is why they invented the laser cut to assist lazy bones dude like me!   Don't get me wrong, I love working with wood but if all my kits were like the HMS Serapis, I would never have time to finish all of them. Thank God for laser cutting!!

    Cheers
    Steve
