I think I'm going to leave sheer-pole off... I have learned so much from you all.. Next build will be a breeze ;-)

I added top mast rope. Not sure exactly how that operates in reality. Looks like it raises the top mast out of the cap ? Any.how it's fitted as instructed.. Rat line business is next. Front and back stays... Realising blocks could be refined down more, but all good..

Most don't do black ratlines I gather.. I read they were lightly tarred.. Will probably go with fawn.. Regards Oliver

    Thanks all.

John, thanks so much, very interesting and informative.. I have some new decisions to make...I wondered if strip sat down on deadeyes, makes more sense to me that it does... Many thanks ollie

Ok canons are on the way.. Thinking it's much better. Big learning curve these finer points. It all just fits in there.. Couldn't have had tackle points any closer..

I read that it's much easier to add rope coils separate and just lay it over the existing rope, if that makes sense.. Regards ollie

I'm getting all indecisive again... I still kind of think the dinghy shows off well on deck so might still go with that, and re do tackles of guns better..

dinghy would hide my holes from eye bolts.

Do you guys think this deck  layout would be okay? either way I took that rigging off guns for now, regards ollie

Thanks each and every one of you .
Yes it's a bit of a chore Banyan.. I.need those spiders.:-)

I've been catching up on some other pastimes with some lovely winter sunshine.. Climbed some mountains, kayak down a stunning river. Beach and creeks..

John, thanks mate, I made up the spacing jig like you suggested because that really made a lot of sense to me... All my pictures show row boat as I have done. Interesting..

Alistair I can't decide either.. Think that the timber side just wins.. :-)

Leanne, I really hope you get her back in action! I should be able to help with some issues if they arise with the building... Looking forward to it..

So I have procrastinated a lot with my canons rigging. The dinghy was a escape I think.. Okay whipped myself into action today and not far off having them done... Just have to decide how to tie them off and if I will do coiled ropes..

    Much thanks. Oliver

    Ollie,

The 'lanyard strip' is called a sheer-pole.  It's main purpose was to stop the deadeyes from twisting or, as Tom has said, in a ship with the shrouds set up with bottle screws, it was used to lock the screws.  When fitted, it should sit right down on the tops of the deadeyes but is lashed in the manner shown in the kit plan photo.

With regard to the Mermaid, the contemporary paintings don't show a sheer-pole, and I'd be surprised to see them on a ship of this size and period.

If you really want to fit them, yours looks a little over scale.

By the way, when you come to the ratlines, note that the contemporary painting show them as being on the forward three shrouds only.

Thanks again. Yeah can't believe I'm this close.. I'm about to fit lanyard strips. They are glued only at the moment..

Kit doesn't say how to fix them. Wondering what the proper procedure is.. When I lash it like in kit photo it looks different.. Regards Oliver

Well, it's been a lonnnnnnnnnnng time since I've posted an update.  This is partly due to the fact that not a lot of progress has been made, partly because I've missed a couple of days at the museum and also partly due to the fact that I keep forgetting to take my camera with me when I go in to the museum!

A few more frames have been raised and hopefully the framing will go a little more quickly from now on.  I'm finally at the stage where the remainder of the frames are rough cut, so while I'm waiting for glue to dry on one frame I can be finishing the next one ready for fitting.

A couple of frames are going to need adjustment at the fairing stage as, for some unknown reason they're slightly too long - but too long is easy to cut down at the final fairing stage.

The lanyard bar is really no more than a place to keep "needful things" on a sailing ship. It's old fashioned "lash it up here" to keep it out of the way type of thing. When the shrouds became steal cables it became a rod that slipped through a hole in the turnbuckles to lock them in place so the tension did not change.
When I was young I got the rare opportunity to talk rigging with a man that actually sailed around the horn in an Ericson Line windjammer. A big honor!!
Had him all to myself for a whole day! He was 85.

Do they look too bulky to anyone else, or do you think it suits.. 2x3mm walnut is what kit says..

My advice would be to decrease the dimension a little so it looks closer to scale then lash it in.

Yes they look too bulky to my eye, I'd incline to 3/4 that size - a guess. Purpose - firstly a spreader for the shrouds and secondly a step on to the ratlines for the sailors but that's a guess too. One thought is that your sailors would have to have very long legs to get onto the lines. Your lanyards may be a bit long. Don't change them! Just a thought.

After just one week, I have got somewhat further than I had planned. I first constructed the Building Slip, making just a couple of mistakes because I failed to read the instructions carefully. This included making a bit of a botch up in varnishing it, which wasn't necessary. It works very well though and, although somewhat expensive, it does make the building of the boat that much easier. Also of course, it can be used in building other boats in the future.

Attached are two pictures showing where I have got to so far which is the installing of the bulkheads and part of the stern, and the first deck. My next task is to install the deck planking which I expect to be quite time consuming, and very detailed work. In looking ahead to this, my son has given me a book which I have found very useful in developing my knowledge of on all aspects of ship modelling and which I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending. This is "Ship Modeling from Stem to Stern by Milton Roth and published by TAB Books.

Will keep you informed as things move on.

I will use the card to make sure lanyard strips are level and the same height on each side and set the way for ratlines..  Have a great day all... Ollie

Hi all, had a day off yesterday and spent it in the shipyard..  Shroud time.. Oh and i was wrong when i said all timber work was done!! had the lanyard strips to make up..

I had trouble getting them to all line up right even after lots of jigging and testing.. I had to take one pair off and redo them.. I am very pleased to have got a step forward, although i did some reading and perhaps i should have left the dead eyes loosened so i could take up final tension once other rigging applied..

I think it should be okay and i am planning to put satin gloss to set them..

I ended up using a card to get heights close to perfect alignment with channels I will use template to make sure lanyard strips go on paralell to channel..

    Regards Ollie

    Mike,

I have taken on board your wise counsel and am tackling the remaining jobs on the basic hull. In particular I am attempting to improve the appearance of the steps. For this I made a chisel with a 1mm wide blade to trim between the treads.

I also noticed the Chapman plan had 13 ports per side on the upper deck. My assumption was that the foremost was the bridle port leaving 12 gun ports.

One thing about only using 28 of the 32 guns supplied by Corel means that I won't be using these four interesting specimen....

I am trying to decide whether they were some secret type of cannon that could fire around corners, thus removing the need for bow and stern chasers - or was it that 40 years ago, when my kit was produced, Corel didn't have access to a decent lathe. Hum.........    Note - the barrels were not supplied blackened back then.

I will be fitting swivel guns in the next month or so - which perhaps will give a feel for how crowded it will get.
