    Ollie,

A half hitch on the cleat to secure the fall and then the end coiled and the coil dropped over the cleat.

I am wondering how to keep excess rope on a cleat..? A neat rolled bundle hanging on the cleat or something else.. Or just wrap enough around the cleat itself?? Many thanks, ollie

I have finished my canons!! Woo.. I have realised all timber work is finished also.. its rigging all the way home now..

I am happy with the final outcome and it would be so much easier next time round..

Hopefully will get a bit done later today.. Patching isn't finished yet in these photos, should tidy up reasonably.

I advise any one new to the whole canon rigging, should make a mock up port and get all the mountings placed in before the real deal... Regards ollie

Ok canons are on the way.. Thinking it's much better. Big learning curve these finer points. It all just fits in there.. Couldn't have had tackle points any closer..

I read that it's much easier to add rope coils separate and just lay it over the existing rope, if that makes sense.. Regards ollie

Ollie:  I'm impressed with your workmanship; hard to believe it's your first model.
I favor the guns rigged as if awaiting an admiral's inspection (i.e. with coils and side tackles).  There are a lot of possibilities that are period correct.
Again, great work and I will continue to follow your build.
    Cheers.

Thanks each and every one of you .
Yes it's a bit of a chore Banyan.. I.need those spiders.:-)

I've been catching up on some other pastimes with some lovely winter sunshine.. Climbed some mountains, kayak down a stunning river. Beach and creeks..

John, thanks mate, I made up the spacing jig like you suggested because that really made a lot of sense to me... All my pictures show row boat as I have done. Interesting..

Alistair I can't decide either.. Think that the timber side just wins.. :-)

Leanne, I really hope you get her back in action! I should be able to help with some issues if they arise with the building... Looking forward to it..

So I have procrastinated a lot with my canons rigging. The dinghy was a escape I think.. Okay whipped myself into action today and not far off having them done... Just have to decide how to tie them off and if I will do coiled ropes..

    Much thanks. Oliver

olliechristo reacted to Stockholm tar in Gun tackel coiling-perfect coils vers some variations Questions
I agree with the previous replies that falls for gun tackles would not normally be coiled, or 'cheesed' as it's sometimes known, in normal use. This would only have been done for a brief period during inspections, etc. The reasons have been mentioned above. Btw to achieve this the 'cheese' was started from the end, working back to the gun, until all the rope was taken up. It was normally coiled in the direction of the lay of the rope. In the case of exposed guns on the weather deck, the tackles may have been removed or, if used for securing the gun, would probably have been covered.

As has been mentioned, hemp rope coils – from the gun tackles to all other lines – were not usually left lying on deck, due to the fact that they get wet or damp, which causes rot. The proper place for them is hanging from a belaying pin, where the air can circulate and so dry them. Even when a deck has been wet and dried out, you can be sure that damp will remain under any coils that happen to be lying there.

I think this is a point modelmakers have to bear in mind. Ok, it might look good to have coils everywhere, but I don't think it would have been so in reality.

A set of tiny cleats on Kieth's build log intrigued me regarding how difficult would it be to make a couple for the pilot cutter.

The first task is choosing the right approach, I prefer to have a large enough piece of material that I can hold it in my hand while using files because I can feel the work being done.

I started by cutting a 5mm strip off the end of a strip of boxwood that was extra from the block making

The first cleat vanished as the saw completed the cut through the wood and I knew that it would be faster to make another than the futile endeavor to look for the one that took off. This first one was made by working the bottom sides first, then partially shaping the topside before cutting it off the bulk

On to version 2, this one I began in the more conventional way of shaping the top first using a rectangular needle file with a squared safe edge, the safe edge is very useful and I put it on the one side with a sharpening stone.

I clamped a small wooden clamp on the end so that when the saw cut off the cleat from the main block it was captive for the next operation.

Here the small cleat is next to the hinge on the companionway door for size comparison in scale this cleat would be 1.5 inches long by 3/8ths wide

and next to the 10 inch brass cleat on the deck.

    Hey wq3296.
I think one of the main things I have learned from our discussions on this and other sites is that wooden ships of the period did not have a static appearance.  Even the guns looked one way when the ship was 'cleared for action' and another way when sailing in heavy seas.  Even in port, they were rigged one way for normal daily routine and another when awaiting an inspection by an admiral.  As modelers, we research these appearances and get to choose how we want our model to be displayed.  "Its all part of the adventure."
    Cheers.

    Hi Ollie
    The rig looks great.

John is right. Have a look at my post on KenW's Fair American of my AVS rig. The tackle is tensioned and then CA glued to the deck and cut (right hand side in the picture) the coil is laid over the top of the cut end (left hand side in the picture). Note that I think the coils I made are too big in diameter and there is too much rope on them.

    Result!

Managed to get the technique to work and I will now be applying this to all my future block stropping.

Looped some thread around the block and fixed with a tiny spot of cyano.

Threaded an eyelet over one end of the thread and doubled back over the block and fixed with a clip.

Next, seized the three lengths of thread together to give the impression of a simple loop around the block and eyelet.

Once the seizing was completed, I soaked the area in diluted PVA and allowed to dry. Once dried, all the loose ends were trimmed off with a sharp knife. This left a very nice tidy block stropped to an eyelet. Very happy with the result.

Repeated for four sets of blocks and glued in place on the bulwark. Fixed the carronade in place and threaded the rigging through all the blocks. Really pleased with the result and just three more carronades to go.

Either way for the boat for me, Ollie.  If truth be known, in practice the boat was probably upended over the skylight or some other totally inappropriate place.

Ollie My thought are regarding the access to the belaying pins on the starboard side where the boat is stored, it feel just a little cramped.

    You kayak down a beach?

The gun tackles look like they're spread a bit far apart, mate.  Attached to the bulwark a little closer to the sides of the guns would look better, if it can be done.

I'm getting all indecisive again... I still kind of think the dinghy shows off well on deck so might still go with that, and re do tackles of guns better..

dinghy would hide my holes from eye bolts.

Do you guys think this deck  layout would be okay? either way I took that rigging off guns for now, regards ollie
