    Thanks for your words Popeye,

I can feel with you concerning The Academy Titanic (scale 1:350 if I`m right)......

I have both "Titanic" (Mini Craft, 1:350) and Cunard`s "Lusitania" (Gunze 1:350) still sleeping in the cupboard. One reason both are frozen in at the moment is that in the meantime I have seen such fantastic detailed and incredibly well built models, in particular the Titanic, in a quality I will never acheave in that scale.
As I mentioned to Peter (Flyer) some days ago, I`m gathering information on a british naval cutter scale 1:48, and on the 1897 launched german passenger liner "Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse" , probably in scale 1:144, for to make my decision wich of the two for the next project
For the cutter I have basicly all I would need already, for the liner not yet

Aussie048 reacted to shipaholic in Novel Way of Making a Stay Mouse
    Hi everyone

I stumbled apon this when trying to think of a way to make the mouse on the mast stays look realistic without having to weave the cover to get that knittled look. Here is a photo of the actual mouse for the Endeavour replica vessel

I am using rope from Syren Model Ship Co for the stay, it is cable laid four strand rope.

First I worm the rope on my Domanoff serving machine. I'm using black cotton so its easy to distinguish during the worming process, (the stays will be painted black later to simulate the tar)

The rope is then served just beyond where the mouse will be

The eye is formed by unpicking the ends of the rope, gluing them down to simulate a splice

Then it is served over the splice

The mouse is made by drilling a hole in a piece of dowel. The dowel is sanded to a cone shape on the end then cut off and sanded to shape and slipped onto the rope.

The create the woven effect over the mouse I am using a flexible cloth wound dressing, its self adhesive so very easy to attach.

The lower part is served. A little bit of PVA glue on the join will stop the self adhesive letting go in the future.

    The completed stay

    Hello Peter,

very kind of you for using that opportunity in Venice and following up to the yard arrangement when bracing........., Thank you very much !

This is how I did it....

As unfortunately neigther Lees`s nor Lennarth`s highlight this point in their books, I did it by the truss-tackles, (loosening the weather side and tightening the leeward Truss until the yard gently touches the most fore leeward shroud), The pics will show....
At The leeward side the yard comes to fit about in the vertical level where the catharpin sits, just under the futtock shrouds, this is sort of a waist in the shrouds and allows maximum bracing on leeward side
In the vertical hight the yard is securely positioned by sling and jeers. I trust it looks quite realistic

I know in the meantime that also on some british ships the first one or two shrouds on each side had an integrated additional tackle to loosten these perticular 2 first shrouds, so they do`nt foul with the yard. In the german version of Wolfram zu Mondfelds publication (in case you have.... this is also shown on page 301 ). It was too late for me to adopt that at time of building...
Mostly the modelers do`nt brace the yards, so this point dos`nt raise questions for the unbraced....

    Nils

here the weather side truss allows the yard to move a Forward distance at appr. a masts diam. (corresponds exactly with what you noticed in the museum)

Here the yard touching the first shroud, but not fouling it, in hight of the catharpin

under running # 3 on the scetch drawing (Mondfeld) it shows the first two shrouds ready for to fit an additional tackle, so the deadeye lacings at the channel need`nt be loosend as well

Whence last we left Our Hero, he were contemplating the matter o’ massively o’ersized drink-can ring-pull hull-horseshoes.
“The problem were to be resolved,” CaptainSteve didst interdict, “by using not the ring-pulls, but, instead-eth, by a-clipping out the folded-over lip from ‘round the top of the drink-can.”

The problem there be that this piece didst require-eth to be edge-bent to make the horseshoe shape … and, verily, we all know-eth how much fun THAT can be-eth.

"Now", Our Hero were to begin-eth, "annealing be a process whereby one doest heat-eth metal, and then doth beat-eth the bejeezus out of it."

But, after much hammering and annealing and wailing and knashing o’ teeth, CaptainSteve didst forge ahead (pun intended), producing these …

“By the way !!”, Our Hero were to explain. “I be a-seein’ on me plans the plottin’ o’ a set o’ keel-clamps, and didst figure to be a-making those at the same time.”

Firstly, ‘twas necessary to gouge-eth out a seat for the newly-forged iron-workin’s.

Finally, here they be after the two-part epoxy didst dry-eth and the clamps were to be removed.

“I shall be a-needin’,” CaptainSteve added, “to buff that clamp mark out, methinks !!”

“As ye would know-eth by now, I be a-plannin’ to over-copper these pieces later on.”

Now, those wi’ a keen eye wouldst, verily, be a-noticing bulkheads in the last few pictures, e’en though Our Hero has made naught mention o’ them thus far.

“Oh, them !!”, he were to stammer. “I be a-puttin’ those in o’er the course of the past seven-day.”
This was a relatively painless step seein’ as they had already been marked-up with reference lines, and the fairing had been done previously …

Exciting times lay ahead now for Our Hero. What with bulkhead spacers and framing and filler blocks to be done (not to mention more thought to be given to matters o’ Electrification) then, most verily, it couldst be some time a-fore the next instalment of the Adventures of CaptainSteve.

“By the way, a teaser,” Our Hero were to add-eth, in closing. “I be expectin’ a couple more additions to me toy-box o’er the coming week and a bit.”

Today, before I sand and Varnish the Hull, I decided to add some birch ply to the forward Cockpit bulkhead and the rear deck Cockpit station and stained them a cherry red. I started by laying out the ply using the plans, I then cut them out and glued them in, and then stained them Next I cut out the floor and cut out birch ply for the rear deck. And lastly I cut out the seat benches. Next will be to sand and varnish the Hull. Here are the results

Something I've had spinning around my head lately is using the contemporary look with her, and fore-going the copper all together. Boxwood lower planking, stained a reddish orange, Ebony, or painted black, whales, and Holly the rest of the way up, painting black above the gun-stripe. I don't know, just a thought. I really like this configuration though. As she supposedly looked when launched.

I have mine sort of in between. Here was my thinking. I have my cannons run out ready to fire. As such, that means the ship is moving toward if not already in a battle posture. My understanding is during a battle the ship's boats would be lowered and towed astern to clear the line of fire as well as try to preserve the boats, which seemed to have a short shelf life. That was also my reasoning in having the rudders attached to the sterns rather than unshipped. Of course, I also like the look.

So I just played with the location until I liked the look. Here are some photos. I chose the white and green based on a Bainbridge note.

    Hi All,

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement.  I've attached some photos of the latest progress of the model at the completion of Stage 39, hull fittings and ladders.  The ladders took quite a lot of time and I'm pretty glad that part is done now. Again, I found the instructions and information lacking a little and after quite a lot of thought, I reduced the height of the ladder rungs by 0.5 mm to make them look more in scale with the model. It was a bit of a test to try and do that in a uniform manner and modified the dremmel router table with a removable fitting in order to achieve it.  See what you think....

I hope all your modelling is going to plan,

    Cheers,

Today, before I finish the final 2 coats of Varnish on the hull, ( I decided to go with a varnished Hull no bottom paint or water line. Kate said you don't want to cover up the wood do you ? she wins ) I started by trimming the deck edge where the Cockpit coaming meets the deck, I then sanded the deck to 400 grit sandpaper ( starting with 220 ) I then applied 2 coats of semi gloss white to the deck . Here are the resultes

After some long contemplation, I decided that I would Varnish the Hull, With Epifanes . and rather than showing it being sanded and another coat being applied. I would show it after 4 coats have been applied sanding with 400 grit in between coats, and waiting 24 hours between coats . I will do one more coat and she should be ready to go . I will more than likely do a flat white bottom paint with a blue waterline. the slot for the tiller has been cut into the transom. Here are the results

    RE-DUX

“Avast and Ahoy !!” announced CaptainSteve, most whole-heartedly. “Firstly, may I just say that it doth feel-eth most good t’ be back."

Now, for those o’ ye who be a-reading this log from the beginning, and have-eth arrived to this very point and be a-wondering just what the heck a ‘re-dux’ be, then please do read-eth on …

“I be back,” he were to explain, “from me self-imposed hiatus whereby I didst take a brief, fourteen-month, break to be a-building me Bounty Launch."

(Now, 'twas during this time that CaptainSteve were to discover this somewhat twisted persona what doth possess-eth most annoying penchants for referring to its' ownself in a convoluted mix o' the First-, Second- and Third-person, as well as fer talkin' in Ye Olde English ... )

    "Ahem ... !!"
“Fer the rest o’ye,” Our Hero were to continue, “who didst link from me Launch build, please feel-eth most free to go back to the beginnin's o' this log and check out me boats.”

Anyways, o’er the past couple o’ years, CaptainSteve hath always kept in the back o’ his mind that one day he be a-returning to his Connie build.
“But firstly,” he were to go on, “I didst be a-needin’ to do that little side project as a warm-up.”

Indeed-eth, with that matter now done and dusted, the time hath now come-eth to be returnin' to the USS Constitution.
“And, thusly, THAT," Our Hero were to summate, "wouldst be-eth why I be callin’ this a ‘Re-dux’ !!"

And so, wi’ his Launch now behind him (”Pics be in the Gallery !!”), the first thing to do wouldst be a complete clean-up o’ his modellin’ room …
“Ye shall be not a-seein’ me benches so clean ‘n’ clear fer the next few years, methinks.”

Now, a-fore he begin-neth in earnest, Our Hero doth wish to ha' a few handy links close at hand …
“These shall be a-coming in most handy fer me,” he went on, by way of explanation.
“First up, just a few o’ the superb modellers who I be a-followin’, and who also be building (or ha’ built a-ready) the Model Shipways kit o’ the USS Constitution.”
Bob Riddoch CapnHarvey Modeler12 Geoff Matson PatrickMil UsedToSail Cookster XKen “I be a-plannin’,” CaptainSteve were heard to whisper conspiratorially, “to be a-plagarizin’ much from the above very fine builders.”

Next up, here be a brace o' links to discussion forums which Our Hero didst also find-eth ‘round MSW:
Constitution Yellow Stripe Constitution Stern during 1812: 5 or 6 windows These were to be most useful fer when CaptainSteve were contemplating some o’ the changes and bashes he be a-plannin’ on makin’.
“I be a-goin’,” he were to inform everyone within ear-shot, “fer an 1812-era look. But there be time for more on that later.”

And this link will make it possible fer Our Hero to check out the real Connie anytime he doth so please …
USS Constitution on Google Maps (Many thanks go out to CapnHarv2 fer that one !!)

Another brace I be findin' most useful:
Old Ironsides Is Getting a Makeover ConnieCam (Thanks also to JerseyCityFrankie fer that las' one.)

And so, wi’out further procrastinations, let’s be a-getting’ this here show on the road !!

“Firstly,” Our Hero were to commence-eth, “a quick check o’ the keel and false-keel pieces which ha’ already been cut, bearded, sanded and faired.”
One little piece didst require some glue-ing and clamping …

“One o’ the bashes,” CaptainSteve didst interject, “which I has been a-plannin’ from the out-set, wouldst be the addition o’ LEDs.”
At this early stage, 'twouldst be nigh on impossible for Our Hero to give specifics – given that he hath been known to change his mind most frequently – but plans are a-foot for lighting in the stern galleries, as well as deck lanterns on the spar-deck.

As such, he were next to be a-fixin’ the wiring connectors …

Thusly, e’en wi’ CaptainSteve’s extremely tenuous grasp ‘pon matters o’ Electrification, he were to proveth his-self to be a Man ahead o’ his Time … for, most verily, Thomas Edison were not to be born for another 35 years hence !!

"These wires," he said, "be jus' fer connectin' power to me circuitry."

Verily, the lower o' the connecting connectors shall be installed in the base-stand, along wi’ a battery-pack and a switch fer’ turning the lightin’ off an’ on again.
“I be a-figurin’ to have the plastic surround o' the upper connectin' connector to finally be extending jus’ below the false keel. Me reasonin’ ‘twouldst be to prevent a short-circuit occurin’ wi’ the to-be-installed copper-platin’.”

But, as the weekend didst draw to a close, Our Hero were needin’ to be wrappin’ things up …

“Now, I be not sure how many o’ Ye doth recall,” CaptainSteve didst reminisce.  “But many moons ago, I didst groove-eth out a channel, one-a-side, to aid in strengthenin’ me keel piece.”

    One last point:
“Those wi’ a keen eye,” CaptainSteve were to close, somewhat paradoxically, “may notice three drink can ring-pulls in the lower right corner o' the last photograph.”
Our Hero, most verily, doth ha’ plans for these, so stay tuned ….

For those o' ye who ha' not a-followed Our Hero through his Bounty Launch build, and be yet to discover the vagaries of CaptainSteve, then ye shall soon learn-eth that he doth have a tendency to go off on tangents, at times.

Most verily, this be one o' those times !!!

"If you wouldst recall," CaptainSteve didst begin-eth, "'t'other eve there be three drink can ring-pulls a-sitting on me work-bench ..."
These were not there, as one might assume, simply because Our Hero got lazy and couldst naught be bothered to clean up after his-self.

"I be a-seein' this pic," he were to announce-eth, "in me copy of Marquardt's AOTS."

It got Our Hero to thinkin', and this eve he were to take-eth up his Dremel and his pin-drill.

"Now, they be a-lookin' like this !!" CaptainSteve stated, somewhat emphatically.

Hmmm ... 'pon reflection Our Hero may consider a re-do ...
