  1. Finally I've got this sanded, at least to where I think it should be. I also put a coat of poly on the inside of the boat
  2. I've removed the bulkhead centers with my rotary tool with no issue. Now comes the time consuming task of sanding the inner frames. I need to find out how much I should sand them.
  3. It's not my first build but it is the first time I've done a POF. I have completed some models from Midwest, which are relatively easy compared to this little model but they where excellent starter kits.
  4. I got it fully planked, its not perfect but I feel a sense of accomplishment. I've leaned a few things for the next project.
  5. In order to complete the planking I have to modify the second strake down from the top on each side. I already tor it down once to about the 4th strake up but I should have gone down to the second strake up from the bottom and did the planking over after beveling each of these strakes a lot more. The lesson for anyone who's going to build this model is you really need to start beveling at the bow right from the beginning of your planking .
  6. I Carefully assembled each frame to the false keel, looking to make sure each one is centered and straight.
  7. I'm going to attempt to build this kit that I bought a few years back. I've looked thru many of your build logs which is invaluable knowledge. I know that I'm probably not going to have a perfect model if I'm successful at completing this boat. I guess the best way to learn is just dive in.
  8. I use CA as my primary adhesive. One of my concerns is will CA hold permanently or will it fail over time.
  9. I've built a couple of models using CA as the primary glue. My question and concern is will CA hold permanently the wood that has been bonded together with it or will it eventually come apart?
  10. I've installed the rub rail. I'm going to paint a blue strip underneath the rail a 1/4" wide. This is a fun project, I'd recommend this kit to anyone new to the hobby.
  11. I've installed the stove pipe and guard rods. the guard is a little higher than what is shown in the plans, I don't think that really matters to much as long as is looks OK.
  12. I'm far from experienced, I'm learning the craft. It'll be interesting to see what the end result will look like.
  13. I finally got all the planking done. It was quite a learning experience for the first time doing it.
  14. I also manufactured my own windlass ( I think that's what it's called ) I didn't care for the one provided. It's funny with this hobby, there are times I think I'll never look at another model again but then I sit down, work it out, I feel good about it again.
  15. I've got to this point But this is where it gets a little tricky . I tried tapering the ends of the plank but still finding it difficult to get the center to bend to the form. I'm going to try soaking the planks and pinning each one to the form. hopefully it will take the shape and dry that way.
  16. I wish I had known before purchasing the Phantom that it's really not a beginners kit at least not for those of us who have no real prior experience. although Model Expo claims it is a good first kit, I think it's quite deceptive of them to give you the impression that this kit is so easy even a caveman could do it.They leave out the fact that you have to figure out how to manufacture 80 percent of this kit on your own which requires some pretty advanced techniques. I use the word kit loosely it should be called a box filled with bass wood that has a picture of a boat on it. When I saw the Peapod Model I new this is a good beginner's kit,I wish I had found this one first.
