Been working since 4:30 am on aft section where the grating should go. I have before pictures and after pictures. I am thinking the after will be a final conclusion with the exception of planking the stern sides in. I am not going to cut or drill hills into this piece because thus far it has looked sloppy. Any suggestions and or comment would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !!

A small amount of filler for the small opening....trim is in and now off to do the planking of stern sides. This will be stained a light Oak as the main and aft decks.

    Hi Ollie,

No worries for you I am sure. You are greatly skilled, gifted, and quite knowledgeable, and I will look forward to watching your build mature into the beauty the Endeavour truly is. As a pen & ink artist, this was one of my favorites I rendered....along with the USS Constitution and the HMS Victory. I rendered approximately 15 vessels in several years in pointillism. Well, keep in touch, and best wishes to you and your Endeavour........

John, I have no Idea what I am going to use it for I just tried it out. What would left hand rope normally be used for?

Today I put the rope machine away so that I can concentrate on the boat. I drilled out the holes for the treenails and started to glue them in I decided to use the ordinary carpenters glue without colour.

A slow task but somebody has to do it , It is good to be building again.

Yet again, incredible workmanship - your attention to detail is quite astonishing!

Next you'll be making some sub-sub minature bolts for attaching them to make 'em useable... Burgee halyards perhaps? Wonders will never cease - I know for a fact that while my eyesight is pretty good it's just not matched by dexterity.

I'll always enjoy reading of your inventiveness.

    Mark Thanks.
Remco, Thanks I am pretty pleased with it myself.

I did a little more work on the cockpit walls today.

The groove is visible for the gasket around the walls.

Chiselling out the corner blocks to create the rounded corners.

The shaping is in the first stage so that I can fit the floor plate.

Well that certainly was a bit of a shock.

I will not try to rebuild everything back to the begining but here is a brief overview of from there to here.

This pilot cutter is based on some plans that were published by MAP
(Model and Allied Press) back in the early 70's and those plans were actually
based on the fishing smack CK482. Those of you who have seen the build in the past
will already be familiar with what I have done so far.

    The model is

    LOD 63 inches

    LOA 84 inches

    Beam 18 inches

    Draft 10 1/2 inches

My intention is to sail this model here are a few pics of the build

The frames are Jellutong, and the planking on the hull is Cedar.

The roller reefing is custom built around a worm gear on hand.

The mast is Clear Fir and the boom is Spruce.

The deck is double planked the lower planks are white pine glued and treenailed
into place the top planks are clear Fir the caulking is coloured Carpenters
glue the top planks will also be treenailed in place.

The cockpit surround is Honduras Mahogany as is the forward hatch and the cabin
    sides.

    The underside of the
cockpit coaming the walls will drop into the opening 2 1/14 inches and there
will be a gasket around the edge of the deck under the coaming. The cockpit
will be fixed into the hull with a couple of brass machine screws then a teak
floor grate will cover those. this way I can access the rudder controls and
    keep the water

I have learned form this experience to back up everything and am now building my log in MSword and posting to the site.

It is great to have the site back.

    Hi Bob,

Well sir, you just helped me in a very big way. I love the old vessels in some of my lines drawings books and would like to research these vessels and make scratch builds as you did so well. I have been pondering for quite some time now. I am a draftsman and have been fascinated by Marine Engineering and Drafting. I just need to learn how to model.

Keep going Bob because with you there is so much potential. Thanks for sharing your story of Joshua Slocum and Spray.

    Bob,

That looks like lots of fun! I wish I had time to build some of these models.

It looks like a Malabar Jr to me too. There are plans for it in "Fifty Wooden Boats: A Catalog of Building Plans, Vol.1"

The same book has plans for Alden's  Malabar 2 Schooner (42'). That's another one I'd like to build one day.

Thanks! I'm going to enjoy this build!

I agree with Mark - y'all need to build this yawl!  The Admiral has spoken, you have a very good correlation in that set of plans - have a blast!  If this turns out at all as great as the Spray it will be worth watching from here in the cheap seats!

Well here we go again.  As I said in my last build, the Admiral saw a picture of a yawl and said,
“Why don’t you make a model of that for me”.
I don’t know about you but I find it very difficult to say no to the Admiral.

What boat is it?  I searched the web and I asked around, the wooden boat forum suggested that it might be the Malabar Jr.

           Malabar Jr.

The Malabar Jr. was designed by John Alden in 1924. There are many variations, originally a sloop with Marconi sails it was also built as a gaff sloop and as a yawl, both Marconi and gaff.  The cabin was also changed, most had square forward corners but some had rounded corners like in the painting.

I was not able to find a picture of it as a gaff yawl, but the gaff sails would move the center of sail aft and it would require a longer bow sprit to move the jib forward to balance the sails.  So that agreed with the painting.

The only problem left was the shape of the bow.  In the painting the stem is more perpendicular where it meets the deck.  Then the word came from the Admiral.
”The painter probably took artistic license in painting the picture so why don’t you take modeling license?”

So unless someone out there can tell me what this yawl is, I plan to build the Malabar Jr. with a Cap’n’Bob bow.

Thanks, Barend, that should be a fine RC boat.  Be sure to start a build log so we can all watch.  And you might go to the new member forum and tell us something about yourself.

    Hi all,

Years ago I read "Sailing Alone Around the World" by Joshua Slocum, and in January 2012 I decided that I would build his boat, the "SPRAY", in 1/48 scale POF with bent framing. The way Slocum built it.  I started asking questions on this forum, and I want to thank all those who answerd with help.  The information on this forum is invaluable.

Then the research began.  In the first chapter of his book, Slocum said he was given an old "fishing smack".  So I looked for fishing smacks of 1800.  About when his was built.  Someone suggested the "Emma C Berry" for framing, so I hunted for information on that boat.  I also gathered as many plan drawings of the "Spray" as I could find.  About five.

Now it was time to check and redraw the plans.  The first thing I discovered was that ALL the plans had errors.  Things like, the shear and section views would agree and the shear and the plan views would agree, but the width of the plan was no where near the same as the width of the sections.  Of the drawings I had, the drawing from the appendix in the book was the closest.  So I traced that into an old copy of AutoCad and worked out the errors.

Checking the fishing smacks plans had shown a frame spacing of from 15" to 22" I chose 18" for framing the Spray.  I drew a section at each frame.  I offset a line .031" inside to subtract the 1.5" planking Slocum used.  The frames will be 3" X 5" so again I offset another line .062 inside the planking for the frames.  This gave me the section lines for the plug I will carve to shape the frames.

I am going to plank only half the deck and deck houses so I can show the insides, taken from the sketches in Slocum's book. (See below)

I saw how you did your grating. Superior craftsmanship and I like the way you used exotics. Did you use the kit parts as a template to cut out in exotic woods? That is what it looks like to me. You taught me so much on this vessel. Since my grating is set to high at the stern and already glued I am not sure what to do. I will have to correct somehow....any advice??

You did very well and I am pleased you have taken your valued time to assist in my build.

I was not happy with the carving of the first eagle, so I carved another one from Boxwood.

I cut out the shape of the eagle first, then started the carving.

I took Antony`s advice in putting a light stain on the carving to bring out the detail.

I used French polish and linseed oil.

    Carving with the stain on.

I`m not certain if the carving of the Eagle is good enough.
I might take this one off, and re-carve another one.
