Jared, If I might make a suggestion.? You could get the windows and doors printed on acetate. The type used for overhead projectors. You can get it done at Staples etc.

The 'glass' effect is very good if you surround them with a wooden frame and much neater than trying to make the mullions from wood at that scale.

I've used painters tape 1" wide. I hold on to each end of the piece of tape and apply it making sure it touches middle of the hole first then both ends at the same time. Don't push, just set it over the hole.
Once applied, I use the side of a sharpened carpenters pencil and gently rub the edges of the hole. I sharpen the pencil so the lead is about 1/4 - 3/8 in length.
Remove tape, set on plank, add 1mm cut to shape, sand to fit numerous time until done.

I love the verdigris color too. My argument  to those that say it should be brown because copper only turns green when it's exposed to air is that it's on a stand and no where near any water so of course it's going to turn green!

    Wefalk has it right.

I would just add that I tend to give the whole area a coat of gloss paint before I add the decals. if you just put gloss where the decals are, it can sometimes darken the area behind the decals and make it look worse.  Spray a light coat of gloss then apply decals with a decal 'setting solution' When dry, spray over with matt or satin or whatever you want your finish to be. The decals should blend pretty much completely.

I never use the polishing grit meant for rocks and stones in the tumbler, just the sandpaper.
I use the method for making the block blanks shown on Jerzy Bin's site (http://www.jbmodel.eu/).  Then throw them in the tumbler.  I also use the ones supplied with the kits sometimes, but they are so unrealistic sometimes that it is easier to make new blanks than spend the time cleaning up the kit ones.  The kit ones usually are drilled off center as well, that can't be fixed unless you fill the holes with wood putty and redrill.
I experimented with 80, 100 and 120 grit papers in the tumbler and the 100 seemed to do the best job in the shortest time.  The 80 was too aggressive and the results were uneven (different densities in the wood I guess).

Eric O., I've not used that kind of tumbler.  It is true that when you run a batch of 2 or 3mm blocks, many of them can get under the sandpaper so it must be sealed tight against the tumbler walls.

I use a rock tumbler from Harbor Freight $29, sometimes less on sale.  I lined the barrel walls, and the top and bottoms with 100 grit, I  let it run 24 to 48 hrs, while checking every few hours.  Seems to do a good job for a large number at a time.
I then usually end up finishing about 50%  of them off by hand.

    Most informative.

I hadn't realised the thicknesser was a sander. One of the reasons I haven't bought a thicknesser was because of the maintenence that blade thicknessers require (sharpening). I shall look into getting one. (and I'll try to pay more attention to what's going on!)
    Thanks.!

This subject is the next in a series for a client who buys and restores old speedboats and cruisers.
It's a 1929 33 foot Baby Gar speedboat which will measure 33 inches (hopefully) when complete. I'm afraid it's all rather rough at the moment but I have reached the staining phase and with some time and a  lot of coats of varnish it might finish up ok!

    Basic frames and first planking.

    Plywood skin for the decks.

    Mahogany outer planking.

How it should look when finished. A similar boat.

I can't remember if I posted this on the old site but there is a manufacturer in Croatia called Maristella that produces kits of some very interesting subjects. They don't look too difficult and are certainly a little more unusual.
