pete48 reacted to Jim Lad in Francis Pritt by Jim Lad - FINISHED - Scale 1:48 - Australian Mission Ship
Back from some time in England looking after my ailing mother-in-law and back at work on the 'Pritt'. Not much more done at the moment, but at least the upper deadeyes have been seized in so I can really go ahead with the rigging now.
ne disappointment on returning to the museum was to discover that the staff had decided to clean the model makers' display cabinet and on moving the 'Pritt' out to clean the cabinet they managed to lose the boom crutch that had been completed and was sitting on the cabin top awaiting fitting.
The photos show the minor progress that has been made.

Now that the boats for the 'Herzogin Cecilie' are finished, I can finally get back to work on the 'Pritt'. I've finished the iron work for the masts and the masts are now fitted. When fitting masts I use a tiny dab of glue on the mast coat that touched only the mast and the deck, so that removing the masts (if ever required) is just a matter of cutting away the mast coat, while in the meantime the masts are held securely.
I had held back on fitting the masts as I hadn't been able to figure out from the photos the form of the spreaders that support the topmast shrouds, but a close ponder over a very highly magnified enlargement of the foremast had revealed that the spreaders are iron rods with holes in the end that are fixed to an additional mast band, so these have now been fitted. By the way, I'm not quite sure why the 'Pritt' had these upper shrouds. They're attached right at the top of the mast, but that's not really very far above the main shrouds and the 'Pritt' is the only pearler I've ever seen that has them fitted. She's also the only pearler I've ever seen with the running stays on both masts, as well, so perhaps she was sailed very hard at some time in her life and needed the extra support for the masts.
The photos below show the model with the masts fitted and some of the standing rigging over the mast heads. The third photo is a close up of the mainmast with the spaghetti of partially installed rigging and the spreaders.

Hi hexnut, Looks like you went all in on this one, thanks for sharing all the info and computer modeling it gives alot of perspective of the actual hull shape. I will be building one of theses after I finish my Billing's Dragon. I was actually planning to build 2 at the same time because I cant decide weather to build as the box or do a smashed version to give it more depth and detail.

Finally got a break in the weather, I was able to get a coat of primer on the Hull, and then used West System epoxy with 410 microlight for Fairing. I then Faired the hull. Next will be to get another coat of primer on and get her ready for gloss white. Here are the results

Well, I procrastinated long enough, I knew that installing the Keel would be difficult, and it lived up to the billing. I started by lining up the Keel on the overturned hull, and marking the Hull as per plan. I used West System G-flex epoxy with 406 filler.( That went smoothly ) The tricky Part was Installing the Deadwood. ( this took a few attempts and burned thru a bunch of wood ) Once the Deadwood was set, I epoxied them in and filled the seams. I will let her stand for a day or 2 and fair the Keel. Here are the results

Thank you, Michael, I will be painting the deck a sand color, the same as on the Buzzards bay 14, it should set her off nicely
Thank you, Patrick, I appreciate it
Thank you, Cap'n'Bob, She has a lot of the same characteristics as the Herreshoff 12 1/2

Today, I decided that it would be better to get the Deck on, rather than finishing up the Cockpit. This way the Keel can be installed. I started by fairing the deck beams to the correct camber. I then cut out and installed the Deck. I then faired in the Deck with the Hull to 180 grit sandpaper. The boat will now be rigid enough to turn her upside down and install the Keel and Deadwood. Here are the results

Thank You, John, Here is where I am at with No. 2 I have installed the Keel and am about ready to start planking, This one is going together a lot smoother than the first, the fine tuning of the molds and building jig have made a big difference and she's right on the money. Here are the results

Today, I actually got a very early start, and a very simple task, I painted the Grey bilge coat ( it proved not to be as simple as one thought ) Next will be to work on the Cockpit seating, ( I have not decided whether to enclose them or leave them open like on the plans ) Here are the results
