Thank You, Jon, The key to a good finish is going slow, taking your time to make sure the prep( mostly sanding ) is smooth

Thank You, Patrick, It's not sad at all, The fun for me is building them, so if I can sell a few here and there it helps finance future builds, I mostly end up giving them to friends and family

I thought that I would show a couple of comparison shots between # 2 and the current build, # 2 is currently on the market ( Ebay )and I wanted to get a few comparisons before she ( # 2 ) goes to her new home

Thank You, Piet, I let the first one Sail ( she is now in Florida ) I am pleased with the set of Sails for this boat

Hi David B., The material for the sails is a Sport cloth with blue ripstop nylon trim

Thanks John, I had a lot of fun that day, I did a series of sea trials for the first boat, wich was part of the build log. She sailed very well

Thank you, Nils, The Sails for this boat turned out better than on the previous 2 builds.

After a busy week ( wich still continues ) I have managed to squeeze in a few hours here and there in the Sail Loft. Ironically, Out of all the Boats I have built, Only the Buzzards Bay 14 have I made Sails for every time. ( This was pointed out to me by Kate ) After many failed attempts, I am pleased with the Sail set for this boat. ( Main and Jib ) I thought I would show the set from the previous Builds. ( # 1 is the Boat in the water) Here are the results

Hi Keith, Coeur d' Alene is a beautiful part of the North West. The Deck is looking good. The way to add all references to your posting is done in the Signature. go to your profile page and hit the edit my profile button in the upper right corner, Then on the left side select signature, it will then display " my current signature" scroll down and in the edit signature, you can set it up however you like. I hope that helps

Thanks to everyone for visiting my humble shipyard and your likes of my efforts.  Thanks to Carl, JesseLee, Pete and Lawrence for your comments and kudos.

My little extra project is still in the trial stage to see if it can be done.  All I can say now is that it is nautical with ships.

Not much work done in the shipyard, had to do some gardening.  That always interferes with fun stuff.
Was able to make a few scrolls for the head rail thingies and have to make two more.  Hopefully I can complete these sometime this week.  Garden work again mutters jochie Piet

Y'all have a great rest of the week.

    Cheers,

It was actually made out of 3 pieces of wood, Paul.   The main piece was oak and the other two were pine.   I'm planning scribing the lines in as they're straight and not tabled like the English ships.  Unfortunately, I don't have anymore of the original boxwood that used when I cut the blank otherwise, I would re-cut.   What I do have is noticeably different so... for eye-appeal, I'll go with what I have.

Thanks for the "likes" and comments.

When I laid the keel, I also cut the stem, the stern post, and the rudder from the same chunk of wood.   I've been busy with other things recently, but did spend a lot of time researching the rudder and sorting things out.  I found that many of my assumptions and some of what is on the plans wrong.

Here's what I've found (including from those responding to a post on this)...

    1) As built in 1755, there's minimal vertical taper.  It wasn't common to do this, but not uncommon either.  Which makes me wonder that maybe it was a shipyard decision.   The rudder follows this.

    2) There is no fore and aft taper to the rudder.  That one caught me by surprise.

    3) There is a cavitation/turbulence groove.  This would have been added when the ship was rebuilt/overhauled at some point later in time.  It would have been present in 1778 when captured.

    4) The fore side of the rudder was beveled at about a 45 degree angle.  The pintle and cudgeon<SP?> straps were recessed only at the fore side of the rudder and at the aft side of the sternpost where the straps bend to the side.  They were recessed as on some other nation's ships.

    5) No spectacle plate.  There's an eyebolt with rings on each side just above the strop hole for the emergency steering.  The strop hole is nominally rigged to two eyebolts.

So.. I machined the rudder blank as shown in the pictures below.  There's two mortises in the top of the rudder, one for the normal tiller (which on Licorne is in the Great Room) and one for the emergency tiller which is on the quarterdeck.

I'm off and running with the metalwork.  I've started silver soldering and wondered why I didn't do this years ago.  It's pretty fast and gives a nice result.

    Hi Mark

Yes the deck planking pattern is a bit unusual. I'm not sure why they would do it like that but it may just have been a consequence of the timber they had available in the ship yard.

    Hello Pete

Altair is a beautiful yacht and I hope I do it justice.
