pete48 reacted to Trussben in HMS Pegasus 1776 by Trussben - 1:48 - Swan-class sloop based on TFFM
Thanks Alan, Druxey and all the likes.
First pic shows all aft framing up to and including the first square frame 14 aft.
Gunport sills and lintels were made of 5" stock Tennoned into the frames, took a few attempts to get these a good fit.

Second pic shows one method I use to apply iso for debonding glued in temp spacers, after the earbuds are soaked in ISO they are positioned and covered in cling film to stop it evaporating, after an hour the spacers will pop out.
Last pic shows how messy the work area has become, it shall be cleaned before any more work is done but also gives an idea of my progress to date.

I think I will fair in the inside aft framing before moving forward to start making the bollard and hawse timbers.

Framing of the last cants and aftmost gunport has begun.

After cleaning up, the foot of each frame was carefully paired down with a chisel and offered up to the model until a correct height was achieved, then glued back into place and new spacers made and added.
From the pics you can see that they are now in their correct positions and no problem fairing them in should now occur.
Now back to making the last of the aft cants and the aftmost gunport.

Today, I thought I would finish Planking the Herreshoff, However I realized that I did not cut in the 1/8" for the Transom. I decided that I would add a 1/8" X 1/8" strip  to the stern of the Keel, and move my Rabbet line 1/8" aft. That is somthing that I will remember for the next one ( and there will be a next one ) there are already a few things that I would do differently. ( That will be for the next build log ) Anyway I then started soaking my planking material while I finished shaping the sheer line ( I am pleased with the result ) It matches the Print . the Planking went smooth and all the seams are nice and tight. I did a good amount of Fairing . Next will be to finish the Planking and build a Cradle . I have had alot of fun building this boat ( my favorite so far ) and aside from the transom sticking out an extra 1/8" ( or the boat being 1/8" too long ) the rest of it is right on the money. Here are the results

pete48 reacted to Jack Panzeca in Oseberg Viking Ship by Jack P - FINISHED - Billing Boats - 1/25 Scale - 9th Century - (Modified)
I started on the deck.  The planks fit between the bulkheads. The Oseberg was made primarily of oak so along with the rest of  the modifications the planks will be made of red oak.  The top of the bulkheads are exposed plywood ends.  The kit has fewer bulkheads than the ship so the planks are longer than the real thing.

I had a false start with the bulkhead strip.  The planks are 1/6 in thick so I thought I could use three layers of the oak veneer that I used on the keel.  (3 layers plus the thickness of the glue was pretty close to the thickness of the oak planks.)

The veneer bent around the curves easily but was so brittle that I could not get it to hold a sharp edge on the long side.  It looked a little sloppy where the planks butted up to the strip.  I decided to rip 3/16 inch pieces of the planking material to use as the strips.  Soaking the oak was not enough to get it to bend to the curve of the bulkheads without breaking so I went to the steam rig.

15 or 20 minutes was enough and rather than build a form I just pulled them out of the steamer one at a time and pressed them into the curve using a bit of an old packing tube and clamped them into place until they set.  Even with the steam, trying to bend the strips with my fingers, it was difficult not to crack the wood but the tube made it easy.  Clamping required a little creativeity.

Next was to add a frame to hold the planks at the same level as the top of the bulkhead.

I will probably face that small bit of visible plywood where the bulkhead turns up with oak veneer.  I say probably because I have not tried it yet and do not know if it will work.  Stain may work as well.

There is still a ton of work to do on the deck and mast foot.  Updates as they happen.  Thanks for looking.

Thank you for your interest in "Newsboy" 1854,

Next step is fitting the jibboom and associated head rigging. Key points include:

    >>> Deadeye assemblies prepared with silver soldered rings
    >>> Deadeye assemblies fitted to bow
    >>> Jibboom / dolphin striker outfitted with eyebands
    >>> Jibboom / dolphan striker fitted and head rigging installed
    >>> Martingale stays and backstays fabricated from 27 links/in brass chain
    >>> Balance of head rigging installation consists of tieing off the fore stays that pass down through the bowsprit bees and jibboom sheeves (following foremast installation)

I then cut out strips of 1/64" Birch ply and roughed in the Pieces. Then fine tuned them Painted the edges Black ( I got a little sloppy ) and glued it up . This is the First one I have done like this . I will do the same for the Fish well Deck . I did start to cut out the bench sides and proped them up for the Photo. Here are the results

Today I finally got the final coats of paint on Keel # 3 for a total of 9 including 2 coats of primer, I got that fiberglass gloss that I was hoping for,  I then shaped the rudder and sprayed 2 coats of primer. I then turned my attention to Keel # 4  I first installed the winow glass . ( I use the plastic from X-Acto blade refill packages ) I then made the cabin top, the hatch rails ( I found a unique knot in the wood that I used for the inside face of the inside hatch rail ) and installed them I then took some Birch ply for the cabin face then installed some Mahogany for the drop board rails . Here are the results

This morning I awoke and started wet sanding Keel # 3, in that process, I dropped the boat and broke off the bow of the cutwater, I decided to just round it off .once I fixed it so that it would look halfway decent, I spayed 2 coats of gloss white.  next I will wet sand again and sprat 2 more coats. ( I wanted to capture the tumblehome and the transom in 2 of the photos )Here are the results

    Hi all

Just finished plating the starboard side of the hull. The port side is only partially plated (ie only plated at the bow and stern) because the frames inbetween the bow and stern will be cutaway so that the internal accommodation can be viewed. Hope this makes sense. If not, then it will all start to make sense as progress continues!

Needless to say, also, the hull requires fair bit of fairing and sanding to get it perfectly smooth. Once done, then the hull will eventually be painted.

    Hope you enjoy the photos.

    Cheers
