Hi Michael, The cleats look good , That is close to the same way I have been making them. I saw Keith's log as well I like how he made them . Your cutter sure is comming together nicely. Amazing work as usual.  I have learned alot from your build logs Fantastic craftsmanship

    Best Regards,

Well, I started this thread so I might as well tell of the final product.
The cause of all this was the thin and generic hinge straps that came with the kit. I bent them so many times trying to follow the pin or the rudder that they snapped like metals do when bent back and forth over and over. I appreciate the advise Von Stetina, and it will remain in my arsenal of tricks but fortunately this time I bent them once and only once. It was nice working with a bit stouter brass... it could take a bit of work.

I ended up buying .5mm sheet brass along with brass tube and rod. After a bit of trial and error I cut the sheet to appropriate size, filed each strip down to uniform widths and bent them to an initial U shape over a piece of wood the same thickness as the rudder. Again, a few stutter starts and finally got the soldering down. There were 6 hinges, each had tube with 3 of them getting a rod to act as a pin. Pulled out the files and sandpaper and eventually with a blackening I had hinges.
The rest is detailed in the pictures...

Wow, So many responses.  Thanks to all of you and to the many “likes”.  Right now it is just pushed together.  I will be taking all apart and will paint the wood white except for the barrels.  The brass parts will stay brass.  But I still have a few other items to make before I paint, such as the main cabin and the steering box.

Hi Pete, welcome to the build.  The scrollwork is part of the kit.  It does take a little adjustment to make it work.  It is in fact the reason I chose this kit.  It is also a large scale, nearly 35 inches stem to stern.  I started the build with changes in mind and they have worked out pretty well so far.

Hello Don, welcome as well.  The Billing Boats kit was the only one I found with scroll work of any kind.  I knew that I was not ready to try that on my own.  One thought is that you could print the pictures of the scrollwork from my log to scale for yours and use them as a pattern.  If you need any additional views I will be happy to take the photos.

Von_Kossa has a wonderful build log on MSW as well  Oseberg Von_Kossa    I have learned a lot from his experience.

Thanks Pete and Patrick, and all the Likes.

Moving to the port side, I added the plank sheer and the solid pieces between the gun ports on the spar deck, and sanded everything flush to the bulkheads. I tried to make sure the profiles on each side of the gun ports are the same so they will look symmetrical. I am going to install the through bulwark sieves and paint the insides of the gun ports, then it will be ready for planking.

I started the day by laying out and cutting out a new Port side Cockpit / Cabin Coaming for Keel # 5 . I then put the Coamings In rubbing alcohol . I then sanded Keel # 3 and got it ready for the second coat of primer. 2 hours later the Coamings were plyable and bent easily , I then sized and installed them on Keel # 5 . I then sprayed primer on Keel # 3, wich I now know I should have waited  ( it's still to cold outside ) and made a mess out of it . I then sanded the Cockpit / Cabin Coamings ( I will do this again using  1/16" thick material ), I like the look .  Here are the results

Today I started by squaring up the frames in the Cockpit section. I then decided to cut in 2 Cockpit Floor Stringers, ( 3/ 32 " square  stock )I figured I would square and plumb this section of the boat first. ( this would be from stations 6'- 0" to 13' - 6" ) after that section was glued , I then installed the rest of the frames working from the cockpit to the Bow. By working this way has kept the Boat square and plumb ( I am very pleased ) Next will be to install the rib bands the Transom and fair the frames. Here are the results

I stripped off the back layer of the inside piece of scrollwork with a scalpel blade so that it would lay flat with the rest of the scrollwork.

There is a spacer at the top of the scrollwork where it pinches together.  It is sanded down and glued to the top of the structure.  There is also a small spacer needed where the scrollwork meets.

Another small piece cut to fit at the bottom of the scroll.  Also, a full hull length spacer at the top of the hull planking to give the last two vertical planks a place to land.  Obechi was specified but it would not take the bend without cracking so I used basswood.   I soaked it and bent it with a curling iron.

Added the last two vertical planks.

Thin your epoxy with 1/3 alcohol.  It paints on easier and when the alcohol evaporates you are left with a thinner coat.

Small update of the work on the masts: I finally found reference of the mizzen masthead so I redid it, the BB is incorrect in the plans (if I'm not missreading it totally).

Also did the the other parts on the mast heads and now I'm planning for the bowsprit details. The BB original parts are not to bad, but it's easy to make better ones and make them close to the one on the real ship.

As you can see I got the ropes and I toned it down slightlly. I learned from the Fred Hocker that they found no evidence of heavy tarring on her ropes, but of a light tarring.

When the Lettie was discovered after being abandoned the masts, bowsprit, and the windlass had been taken off the boat and mostly disassembled so I am not completely sure this is the correct windlass.  I got this design from Chapelle’s “The American Fishing Schooner”.  I think it will do.  It is mounted on a temporary base and I will be taking it all apart and painting some of the parts before mounting it on the boat.  I have to admit I had a lot of fun with the linkage.  I wish I had kept time on this I figure somewhere between 12 and 20 hours.

pete48 reacted to michael mott in Bristol Pilot Cutter by michael mott - 1/8 scale - POF
A set of tiny cleats on Kieth's build log intrigued me regarding how difficult would it be to make a couple for the pilot cutter.

The first task is choosing the right approach, I prefer to have a large enough piece of material that I can hold it in my hand while using files because I can feel the work being done.

I started by cutting a 5mm strip off the end of a strip of boxwood that was extra from the block making

The first cleat vanished as the saw completed the cut through the wood and I knew that it would be faster to make another than the futile endeavor to look for the one that took off. This first one was made by working the bottom sides first, then partially shaping the topside before cutting it off the bulk

On to version 2, this one I began in the more conventional way of shaping the top first using a rectangular needle file with a squared safe edge, the safe edge is very useful and I put it on the one side with a sharpening stone.

I clamped a small wooden clamp on the end so that when the saw cut off the cleat from the main block it was captive for the next operation.

Here the small cleat is next to the hinge on the companionway door for size comparison in scale this cleat would be 1.5 inches long by 3/8ths wide

and next to the 10 inch brass cleat on the deck.
