Today, I worked on Keel # 4 . I first layed out the deck, and  then the Cabin / Cockpit coamings ( I went with the same size as Keel # 5  1/16" thick ) I then cut out the deck and coamings , I then put the Coamings in alcohol ( I knew that I would need to soak them for a while ) I then turned my attention to fitting and installing the deck , I then installed the Coamings . Here are the results

Well just arrived home from working away, threw my bags through the door and went strait down to the workshop to look at the issues with some of my aft cant frames, Druxey hit the bullseye and my port frames 2&3 are sitting high compared to the starboard side ones!

Starboard frames do not show any problems and the height of breadths are dead on, the first pic shows the astern view of the starboard side from below, the second shows the problem port side internally and shows the frames sitting high compared to other frames.

So this weekend I will break out the isopropanol and move the frames down as suggested by Druxey.
It's great to get sage advice that saves your *** on this site, Druxey - I owe you the adult libation of your choice if we ever meet.

    Thank-you Piet!

Thank-you Pete! Yes, this really is my first scratch build, but not my first experience with carving or artistic things though.

Dan: Not a problem. You have your notepad ready...no pressure there.   Thank-you as well for the Mother's Day wishes which does apply to both Canada and myself.

Thank-you Remco! I'm sure with your skill level, your carvings will be spectacular and you won't need mine,   but thanks for the thought!

Thank-you Sjors! I'll have to think about the online courses.

Today, I thought to take a break from the painting and sanding ( Keel # 3 & 5 ) and work on Keel # 4 .  First I stained 1/16" material( I let it dry for 2 hours ) then soaked them in alcohol so that I could bend them into ribs between the frames. ( I just eyeballed the spacing )  I then cut out a nice piece of birch plywood for the front of the cockpit in front of the fish well deck, and installed it. I then made floor boards for the inside of the cabin ( stained them ) , I will leave them loose so that the bilge can be easily accessed. Here are the results

    Pete,
It's coming along. I'm pleased, although there are elements I'd do differently. I love your Muscongus Bay boats; you certainly know how to put those together. How was the move? I hope you didn't have to go too far.

Nils, Thanks, but your Bohuslan is the standard; a truly beautiful piece of work. I loved your use of plumbing fixtures for ventilators. I saw it too late to try it myself. Sometimes I wish I had more stuff on the deck like you do. It makes things more interesting to look at. From my model railroad days I remember the old saying, "the clutter is the clincher".

    Bob,
Don't forget the woman on the bench at the stern! I know some of us put figures on our models, but I haven't gotten that creative yet.

I've got the Vinal Haven Historical Society interested in perhaps giving her a home.

With the weather here still raining, I started cutting out the rest of the parts for Keel # 5 . The Cockpit/Cabin Coamings wich I used 1/16 thick material . I soaked the Coamings in rubbing alcohol for 45 minutes and still broke the first one, ( you can see it in the photos ) I then leaving the other Coaming in the alcohol, cut out the cutwater, the rudder, cabin top and the hatches. I sanded and dry fit the Cutwater so its ready for instalation. I then pulled the other Coaming out of the alcohol now its been soaking for an hour and a half . I did manage to get the Cabin side of the coaming bent, I like the thicker look that the cockpit will have , so I will take my time with the port side coaming I  will cut out a new Port side Cabin / Cockpit Coaming  first. I did complete more of the fairing and should be ready for primer soon. Here are the results

I had planned to add the four through the bulwark sieves, but again had to think about how to frame them and hold them in place before planking the bulwarks. The solid pieces solved this problem by giving me a solid surface to mill out to hold them.

I milled the port and starboard pieces at the same time so i had a better chance that would come out the same. I first marked the pieces:

Then put them in the drill press vise, which I angled so that the slot corresponded to the X direction of the XY table. I have both pieces in the vice back to back so I could cut them at the same time. I drilled a series of holes along the slot:

Then used a small end mill bit to square up the slot:

And finished with a small square file:

To make the sieve, I sliced the end of a dowel into very thin slices that I glued between two thin pieces of wood. The wood is wide enough to be oversized, even when these pieces are planked on both sides, so I can sand them flush to the planking later. I blackened the edges of the dowel pieces with a black Sharpie.

I then sanded the short edges and the top and bottoms of the sieves to fit into the slots:

I'll add these later after I have glued these solid pieces in and sanded them flush with the bulwarks.

So, I glued the two starboard side pieces in, as seen here:

But, I had forgotten to add the notch for the stern bumpkins, and I did not leave enough room for it on the first pieces. I remade those two rear pieces with the sieve slot a little more forward and the notch for the bumpkin, which I made by just drilling out a hole and squaring it up with the square file.

Now I just need to repeat adding the plank sheer and solid pieces to the port side.

Some progress from over the weekend. I have been dealing with family issues since then.

So, I needed to frame the spar deck gun ports, which I could have done the same as the gun deck gun ports except that the tops of these will be framed by the rail. One way I could have gone was to add vertical frames at the sides and horizontal frames between the bulwark extensions and these vertical frames, but only on the parts of the bulwarks that will be planked over. This seems too complicated and fragile, so I went with a simpiler (at least to me) solution - solid pieces that will be planked over in the parts of the bulwarks that are not gun ports. These are sanded to have the same shape as the bulwark extensions so each side of the gun port will look the same. They are glued to the plank sheer on the bottom and the bulwark extension on one side, so they are pretty solidly attached.

I let these dry overnight, then sanded them flush with the bulkheads on the outside. When I installed them, I made sure that they were flush with the inside, so I did not have to sand them (much) on the inside.

As you will see in the next post, this method also helped out with the next step.

The day started with me fixing the mistake on Keel # 3 ( the primer mistake lots of sandiing ) after that, I then shot 3 coats of  gloss white.  I will wetsand in the morning and do about 2 coats more, In the mean time I made a cradle for Keel # 4 . I then installed the cutwater on Keel # 5 and did some more fairing on it. here are the results

I started the day by laying out and cutting out a new Port side Cockpit / Cabin Coaming for Keel # 5 . I then put the Coamings In rubbing alcohol . I then sanded Keel # 3 and got it ready for the second coat of primer. 2 hours later the Coamings were plyable and bent easily , I then sized and installed them on Keel # 5 . I then sprayed primer on Keel # 3, wich I now know I should have waited  ( it's still to cold outside ) and made a mess out of it . I then sanded the Cockpit / Cabin Coamings ( I will do this again using  1/16" thick material ), I like the look .  Here are the results

Thank you Keith , I have been I like to junp in both feet at once. I did make the tumblehome more dramatic on Keel # 3 ( post # 100 )  It was somthing I thought to try since I was going to paint it anyway,( it was alot of work , Fairing and filler )  It did give the transom a nice line.  I did make a new Portside Coaming for # 5 . I started using alcohol for bending when a freind of mine that was building model airplanes, said that because it was alcohol it would dry faster.  You could have the piece ready to install more quickly.( wich has worked for me ) You should build your kit they are fun to build, they have become a sort of addiction for me.

    Best Regards,
    Pete
