Various reports I have seen on the web suggest Mamoli had a serious fire in late 2014 and, sadly, went out of business as a result. Here in the UK many of the kits are still on sale by retailers.

Hi Nigel Others will have a better idea of quality. However, let me say I have one of these all packaged up in a box in my garage. What has prevented me from building it, so far, is the size - 49 x 33 x 18 inches. We just don't have room anywhere in the house for a finished model of that enormous size. Best of luck if you do go ahead - and please do start a build log to let all of us see your progress

That's an interesting idea. I don't know how a whole build log could be saved/copied in one go, but it might be possible to copy individual web pages from a log to an external repository such as 'Evernote'. Has anyone tried this? Given that build logs can run to quite a few pages, this might become quite a task in itself. The questions of copyright and asking permission beforehand are very relevant. Indeed, is it against forum rules to make any kinds of copies at all?

If you can't get isopropyl alcohol, might you consider surgical spirit, instead? I've always understood it to be made of much the same primary ingredient, but with added extras (ie to make it smell less pleasant, and also to make it undrinkable, etc.). I've bought it in the past from chemists quite easily for such as modelling and cleaning purposes.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
