Thank you very much FMartin Not much going on this end in the way of model building, work is ballistic at the moment and looks like being that way for several months.
I didn't find anything other than the museum model and kits plans so there are numerous examples of 'artistic license' in my build.

    Kind Regards

Knock knock... errr... I'm late for the party, but man am I surprised I found your build log. This is some amazing building you got yourself going on! I'm mesmerized... If I had a doubt about my next ship, it vanished right away... My next build will be a Mordaunt, so please take a lot of pictures for reference      !!! Jokes apart, congratulations on the clean build. It's really top notch!

I have a question... do you think you method of hull building would work in a smaller scale (20~40 cm hull size)? Do you have more pics on the "shape" preparations and fairing? I'm a beginner and I'm reaaly interested in this different construction method!

What kind of oil / varnish do you use? It's beautiful and gives it a weathered look!

EJ_L that is precisely my finding today. I'm trying all kinds of improvised stuff to impeove this wandering off but so far nothing. With veneer its even worse cause it's so thong i end up cutting instead of scribing... tomorrow is a holiday here so i'll spend a few hours trying a few ideas. I hope i can gey acceptable results...

It is very nice for me. Thank you that you appreciate my work.

Hi Mike,  In my scale (1:27) everything is easier and any mistake could easy fix. So far everything is pretty OK with plan, but sometimes I found small inaccuracies. This is my first model built this technique. I'm still learining.

Thanks again for the wonderful comments and support everyone.

One of the previous problems I had was no definitive reference points.  This led to more than a few errors in the heat of battle... err.. building.

I'm adding some things to the frame drawings...  the cutline is being defined as are the wale locations, gunport, and deck clamps.  Hahn defines these on his framing diagram but then suggests that we cut up his plans and use them to mark up the hull...     I'm planning on "nicking" gently the frame at some of these points such as cutline, wales, putting in a nub to mount the deck clamps on, and as before, pre-cutting out the gunport area.   I've also marked the frame drawings with lines at the outside/bottom edge of the build board so I don't make the frames over long.

The frame in the pic doesn't have any gunport work but is representative and I still have another 54 frames to do...

Lastly, I've mounted the framing diagram (since it has 95% of the reference points I need) on a piece of Masonite.  When I'm done verifying each frame, I'll glue a strip of wood to overlay the baseboard line.  This will give me a positive reference point when using the EdT Measuring Tool.  Again, I know I had some issues getting the bottom end dead on the line for the base board consistently.

For those who haven't see it, it's a great tool for transferring reference points from plans to the build.  It came from Ed's Naiad build.  Mine is made from boxwood with some brass fittings and a steel thumbscrew.

I have scribed planks before on a deck but not a hull. The hardest part I had was keeping them straight. It didn't take much for the blade to catch a different grain and wonder off in an unwanted direction. In the end it came out quite nice and I do think it would be a great solution to planking at such a small scale.

Thanks for the comments, the "likes" and just looking in...

At last, a real update as life (the Admiral's health) got in the way.  The frame extensions have been removed and she's starting to look more like a frigate.   I still need to sand them down to the sheer strake but I'll be doing that when I need a break from the gundeck work.

Here's the pictures...  as always, a click on them will open them to full size (or what constitutes full size on MSW).  The last two are more of a reference shot for examining things on my part but I thought I'd toss them in anyway.  Sorry about the sawdust and mess.....

Thanks Patrick! I'm not sure its going to work because I'm doing it on veneer. It is already thin and after scribing and sanding it may become too fragile. But Ill try anyway. Scott, my 'unorthodox' approach comes from a mix of lack of time, money and space hehehe... Since the bulwarks wouldn't appear and I had some styrene lying around (I used to do some helicopter plaatic models), I told myself to give it a try... Next time I'll stick to wood though...

Oh I forgot to say... On the port side is a Brazilian wood called tauari. But the cutting of this veneer left it with a lot of 'scars'. I'm using it only for the template although it's a beautiful wood (this piece however has 'muted' colors). On the starboard side is a different wood. This is the final wood. Its beautiful yellow collor is close to the model in the French museum. Unfortunately I have no idea what kind of wood it is, since i bought it in box with scraps of veneer (let's say I don't have much money for hobbies - going to graduate school is great but maybe not a sound financial plan hehehe)... i'll save some of it to try to find some more of ot or what wood this is. It does have kind of a 'flamed' effect like maple...

Hey everyone. I haven't been having much timw to spend on the model lately, to my great self disappointment... My vacations are over, my dissertation is still late and my index finger is still a bit sore. But sinec classes haven't started yet (I teach in a local university), I had some time to consider my next steps.

First, I found the work of a modeler/artist called Rex Stewart. I guess most of you have heard about him but I admit my ignorance. His models share some similarity with mine - his main concern is not replicating the original building methods in miniature. I don't either, so maybe I could learn something from him. The way he builds is a lot smarter than mine (he carves a solid hull with a dremel of sorts).

But here it gets interesting. He doesn't plank the outside, he rather simulates planking by scribing/scoring.

And his results are not bad really. If I didn't check his buildlog on Flickr, I would've thought he planked this model. Check for yourselves...

In my case it's late for a solid hull, but I could somehow partly replicate this idea, right?

So i used some low tack scoth tape and after a looot of sanding I managed to get templates for thw sides of the ship...

I'm gonna give scribing a try, see if works fine with me and I'll post the results later, before glueing it all in place. It seems promising!

Having relatives over can be really stressful... they don't offer any help and expect everything ready at hand... My helper (cat) flees every time she sees a child... but I still managed to finalize glueing the wales...

The dreaded planking will start soon, I'm still working on how to do it. I'm thinking abou doing it a bit more in detail and with care from the first wale up. From the wales down (waterline to be morw exact) I will paint it like the parisian model. So, just a good sanding and some Tamiya putty will make it look good. Has anyone tried this putty with wood? With my plastic models it works wonders...

I'll also finish the upper decks and glue them soon... just as long as my relatives don't kill me first...
