I agree, those sails are absolutely amazing. A tutorial would be nice. And more pics of course.

You're likely right on "we don't know enough." There's quite a bit of detail that changes depending on where you get your information. Lubbock probably got his information, like Longridge did, by visiting the ship in his day and reading tons of reports, news articles etc. I don't know how legit his research is and how accurate it might be but it's better than nothing. If one wants to model her during a given period in her career, then some of this information is essential. I'm simply interested in her beauty and I can make changes to a model to suite my tastes so the level of detail is less important for me. I too have often wondered why no more information is available about her given how important she is purported to have been.

There's an interesting interaction between her Owner Mr. Willis, (no relation that I know of) and her skipper Captain Woodget. Willis asked why the boats were white and not black as prescribed by his instructions to his captains. Woodget simply replied, they look better white and that was the end of that. Willis knew to appease his good captains and not cause a stink over nothing. I'd paint them white.

Will she be in the gardens this summer? I'll stop by and check her out once she's afloat on display.

Sailor1234567890 got a reaction from mtaylor in HMS Surprise by Vincwat - scale 1/69 - Lego
Check out Master and Commander, there are at least a few scenes in Surprise's Sick berth. They'd have been laid up in hammocks slung fore 'n aft. I look forward to seeing how she turns out. Not sure there are many (any even) lego builds on the site. I think Lego is one of, if not the greatest toy ever designed. Make sure the good Doctor's coca leaves are well secured against those millers to be onion-sauced.

Ian,
I've heard of a few names for those metal multi-ring-shaped pieces. Monkey face plate, they often had three circles in the plate; eyes and a mouth. I've heard it called a Spectacle Iron as well.

It would appear to me that there is enough information out there for some rich guy to actually build one full scale if he so desired. The work here is incredible. I love seeing your progress.
Cheers,
Daniel

What is the space with the little door at the bottom? Shot locker? I can't imagine opening that if the locker was full.... Can't figure it out.
Thanks,
Daniel

Simply amazing. How are Spanish 74s different from French or English ones? I can't seem to find much information about them anywhere. I think I read somewhere that they are often of a better quality but in what ways? Your work is stunning, looking forward to seeing more of it.

Where does someone find the time to build something like this? I have enough trouble fitting in an hour or two here and there to put together my plastic model. These ships took years to build in real time. Hundreds of workers for years at a time. You have the same number of parts to fashion, do the work alone yet still manage to assemble these works of art in something under a lifetime..... Amazing.
