  4. Having lost my build log in the catastrophic crash of 2012, I will try to resurrect an abbreviated version. I used Portia Takakjians plans and referred to both the AOTS book and the POF publication. There were significant differences in the deck framing between the two books. This was my first ship-model and I learnt a lot along the way, especially from MSW members later on. The build took 10 years and was done in american cherry for the structural elements.   6. Thanks, Druxey. Some of the earlier photos are after application of orange oil, hence the shininess which is temporary. The latest photos are raw timber. The timbers around the transom show darkening from the orange oil. Dick

  11. Thanks, Grant. The Jarrah is difficult at times and the dust is irritating. So I always wear a mask when sawing and sanding. Some members may not like the very dark hue the wood takes on when oiled. Cheers, Dick
  12. The stern timbers are made and installed. Please note the is a large entry port on the larboard side of the stern which was originally for loading of timber and masting. Dick
  13. Here is more on rebating the "counter-keel" to receive the floors for each frame. I used the cross slide on my saw to make these. Ensure that the stem and stern frame rebates are lined up on the frame marks on the baseboard.The next job is to make the rabbets. Dick
  14. I will try to document each step, including the mistakes. The first step is to make the keel from western australian jarrah hardwood. The stem and stern post as well as keelson will also use this wood. Cheers, Dick
  15. I have it in mind to build a 1:48 scale fully framed model of the french gabare Le Gros Ventre. This will be based on the excellent plans by M. Gerard Delacroix published by ANCRE Press. This is of particular relevance to me, as a western australian, since this vessel, under the command of M. St. Allouarn, was part of the Kerguelen expedition of 1772. He in fact laid claim, in the name of the french King, to the western australian coast and left a message to this effect in a bottle at Shark Bay 30th May 1772. Unfortunately, M. St. Allouarn died at Ile de France 5 months later. Le Gros Ventre ended its life as a hulk in 1779. As a start, I present the building board. Dick I plan to use only western australian woods for this project.
