    Arrgh!

Sometimes while you are posting,,, and you have attached all the pics and write everything… suddenly inet says “no” and all the work and effort go to the trash bin.Anyway, we are just dealing with ceros and ones not with wood.

Thanks very much Pete! Nice place you live. I have just checked it out on google maps and looks beautiful. Lots of forest to make model ship building or Bourbon barrels…

Christian!! Where are you?! How is the HMS Pegasus going?

Sometimes one feels so alone here in the “Complete Model” forum…

Here´s the work done so far during these two last days.

As you can see the top beams (4x4mm) at the ends of the frames were pretty helpful to glue the limber strake.

Here´s a shot of the two strakes glued. Took me two days. Meanwhile I was cutting more patterns, studying the plans and sanding the hawse pieces.

And here is where I am moving on… the fore and aft platforms. I have to buy a small level to ensure the platforms are leveled. It is a device quite expensive. Made in Japan.

Hope to post more tomorow. Fingers Cross.

    Hello All!

As I said, I was going to make a "practicum" about the Hawse frames but I dropped the idea. I´m not an expertto do so.

Instead I´m going to put a bunch of pics that I hope will speak by themselves... There we gooOOO!

    Just checking.

One pair sanded and the other one not.

The angle in my model against the -W- frame was 26º so I sand a piece of pine to put it against my tilt sand table.

All rough sanded. I will add the 5th one later on.

Starting the sanding. Pretty pretty slow and always checking. When i say slow is slow and slow...

Checking the outside fit. the interior is not still faired.

The inner side was much more easy than I expect with the minidrill.

Checking again. Did I say it? wood is patient like some body says...

and that´s it till now, still the portside to be done...

    Best wishes and happy thanksgiving!!

    Hello All!

At last Saint Fryday! a whole weekend to spend modelling...

A small update. The keelson. When I remove the Triton from the jig, even all that pine chocks between the frames, was quite weak. Indeed I broke some of them trying to simulate the movement I should do with a sand block.

I put the keelson to strength the hull. From now on I have a good central "line" of wood and I can start adding the thick stuff in the inside. The inside is allready faired. I also cut yesterday the mighty hawse pieces. I´ll give them a try today. Finger cross.

    Here are some pics...

I had to bevel a little bit the stern keelson to be able to fit it between the aft frames. The gap there was pretty narow.

    Best wishes!

Only three hours?  I guess we all work pretty much the same way... Have you seen albert´s workshop? the one who is with the Naiad. It´s like a surgery room.

Anyway, I always like to see the workshops of the people around. No room in the house smells like our shops with all that dust, oil, paints, jars and thousand of hours working there to build jewels.

    Enjoy the weekend!

OK you may have thought it was tongue in check when I said I had to clean the
    shop before I continued.

You see I am the type who likes to spend as much time
as possible working and I just jump from one step to the next. If what is on my
desk isn’t needed for the next portion of the build I just push it aside and onward
I go. Well seeing that there was no workspace left for me to start cutting the
red heart for the inboard planking it was time to clean.

So I just spent the last 3 hours cleaning and now it's be full steam ahead this weekend!

Thank you Daniel. The build may be clean but I sure have got to clean up the shop before I can
do anything else. I’ve been a little lazy when it comes to putting things away!

As far as sealing the wood goes if I have finished a section and no more gluing will be done I apply
a coat of MinWax Wipe on Polyurethane satin finish. This seals the wood and helps protect it.
Also with so many nooks and crannies it would be really hard to apply later.

Thanks Augie, Yes the holly, like all the wood from Hobby Mill, is really nice and fun to work with.

    Thanks Chuck much appreciated.

Hi Bob, Thanks and your Essex is coming along very nicely too!

I have completed planking half of the gun deck. One plank had to be notched to fit around the hatch.
It doesn’t adhere to planking procedures and it is a little too thin but close enough. There won’t be
any rot issues anyways. At least I hope not!

The hatch has not beeen glued in place yet as I have to sand and scrape the deck, treenail and seal it.

    Hello shipmates.
     Another long update :-
Spent a little time making a ropewalk. but this one is a little larger than the Philips shaver on I have used before.
The shaver would not stand twisting the heaver ropes that I wanted for this model.
The parts are from Ebay. Approx  2 hours to build.
A simple servo tester, A cheep brushless speed controller, And a brushless motor.
    Gears used ..1 off 60mm dia 58 teeth, 3 off 20mm dia 18 teeth, 1 off 14mm Dia 12 teeth.

Yes I have used miniature thrust bearings as I has them in my storage box.

That’s about it for the Ropewalk.

    Now for the Build
A test of the Tulip wood and the different types of caulking that I am using for the deck planking

little loop on the wire ends for the Led lanterns to hang from.

Wire hidden in the wood. Cut a line with the razor saw then push the brass wire into the slot.

Main Gundeck in place But not glued. Bits missing are left out to enable deck to fit between the frames.

    View from the bottom.

Hello everyone and thank you all for visiting and thanks for your "like" votes.

Not done much today, had to go to an holiday office party - - - free lunch!

@ Daniel, there are no silly questions my friend.  I know it was a bit confusing in describing all the "stuff" involved with the con.  The reason for these pipes or tubes is to make whatever goes into it move up and down, i.e. make them retractable as was done on the actual boat.  I'm making it a semi working model as much as I can.
Yes, the styrene tubes are for the AA guns.  They are mounted on a platform that is attached to a plate that is attached to a hydraulic cylinder that allows the gun to be lowered into the tube which is then closed from the outside before the crew goes inside through the crew hatch tube.  The AA gun tube is also rated for maximum design depth and will thus remain dry.
I have reposted one picture with letters to each tube with an explanation for each one and why.

@ Popeye, yes, but the only part that has a lot of "stuff" inside is the actual control center where the periscopes can be used for attack and navigation.  Oh, there is much more "stuff" inside that room but - - - .  Below that control center is the central control station.  Access to the control center above it is with a pull-down ladder.  When on the surface access to the outside of the con, called "the bathtub," is through a hatch tube.

@ Sailor, right you are, like I mentioned there is a lot of "stuff" in these boats.  I remember the smell of the boat when my father came home from patrol or during his inspections of the boat and or work that was being done.  No matter how often he bathed it always stayed with him.  I guess it became part of him, like I used to smell like aircraft when I was working on them.

@ John, thanks my friend for visiting and yes, things are getting exiting now.

Okay, as I said above, not much work was done today but I managed to make provisions for the 2 X 3 stringers to tie all the bulkheads and frames together and to support the gun and "bathtub" decks.  I hope to be able to cement the forward and aft half circular styrene command center walls to it.
I am also making the frames for the forward section of the con but need to make the AA guns first to be able to determine how long I have to make the "piston rods" so they don't pop out of the "cylinders."

I do not have photos of the AA guns and will have to go to the internet to find them.  She had two 40 mm Bofors in pairs and one 12.7 mm gun for anti aircraft.  This was all changed during the refit in 1943 but that was after my father's time.  I'll have to search again through all my photos, also of the boats that were build and launched just before the Nazi army overran the Netherlands in May of 1940.  Even so, these pics may not be enough to give me an good idea how these guns look like.  The same goes for the deck gun.

Tube A is the outer casing for the snorkel exhaust pipe. That thing is on the most aft part of the con and the exhaust pipe can be raised and lowered.
Tube B is the crew hatch for access to the aft AA gun deck and is flush with the deck surface.
Tube C is the water tight AA gun tube.  The aft gun deck ends just forward of that tube where the Periscope sliding cylinders are housed.  This tube stick out above the deck surface.
Tube D is the shroud or cylinder for the snorkel intake.  This is also a retractable pipe as the exhaust is.  When "snorkeling" all you could see are the exhaust, intake, antenna mast and periscopes.  For submerged sailing every thing was retracted as much as possible.
Tube E is for access to the bridge or "bathtub" above it.  I made this tube extra long to give it sufficient support.  In the real boat it was rather short with the watertight lid/door at it's bottom, which is in the "ceiling of the command center.  I could have made this tube short but wanted the extra support.
Tube F is the forward gun deck crew hatch tube for access to the forward AA gun.
Tube G is the forward watertight AA gun tube.

    Cheers,

And when I say all I mean it. Those who click on the “like” tab and the ones those actually write something. Richard!! Glad to see your Triton growing and growing and mini-you going smaller and smaller with all that frames above you.

After doing some surgery with the platform, cleaning all that glue and removing like eight carlings, the refurnished piece looks good to me.

I have moved to do the “floor doors” for the fish and spirituous drinks. The wood for the frames is blood wood (2x3.5mm). The cover is ramin (0.6mm thick) and the transoms underneath walnut (2x2). These transoms are not going to be visible but God sees everything…

I have tried Ed´s method to simulate the caulking mixing the glue with dark acrylic paint and it worked out! I rasp the excess of glue with a sharp file just on the visible side.

I made a sketch of what I´m intended to do. The hinges will need some thinking but probably I´ll cheat and make them with evergreen plastic stuff. I have no equipment and room to be soldering around. Photoetched parts? I´d love to do them but I´m kind of broke and the etched parts are not cheap.

    Hello all,
I received my Swan book - what wealth of information that is! A good buy.
Additionally, I have been installing frames from stem to stern and am now working on the bow cant frames.
I feel I need to install these cant frames first so that I have a reference line for the bollard and the pieces that go before it. It should be an easier task to just fill in the gap rather than start with the bullard and then make frame W.
So below is my progress so far. Mini-me has made a return to help with scale. I have glued the pieces together for the cant frames and have just placed them in their position to see how they look. I will begin fairing them soon to a point close to their final shape then I can start the filler pieces and the bollard.
Please pardon all of the rubber bands. They are trapped on the frames but will be cut off when the cant frames are done at both ends. They are still needed to hold the model in place when I glue in the final frames.

The next picture shows the hole being drilled for a pin on the port side of frame 16.  A bent pin in this hole will secure the top on this side of the frame to the ribband strip.

I mentioned earlier that a wood block is used to space the frame and the caliper to set the height of the ribband to the bottom of the planksheer rail.  That rail will be added much later.

The next picture was taken after frames 16 and 17 were erected.

At this stage the ends of the temporary ribbands were reached.  The next picture shows work to extend the ribbands.  Setting frames using the ribbands has been a major time saver and helped get the frames into faired lines.

Connecting strips are being glued to the bottom of the existing ribbands.  The next picture shows the ribband extensions being glued on.  The “gantry” is being used to hold clamped guides the set the height and breadth of the ribbands at that position along the hull.

The gantry can be moved and the guides set at any given position.  The next picture shows another view of the hull with the extended ribbands.

In the last picture frame 18 has been installed and pinned to the ribband extensions.

The length of the hull – and the eventual size of the model are starting to become apparent.  It is really long and slender.  By way of comparison, Naiad was 147 feet long with a breadth of roughly 39 feet – an L/D ratio of roughly 3.7 to 1.  Young America had a length of 240 feet and a breadth of 43 feet – an L/D ratio of 5.6 to 1.

There are now 11 more full frames to install.  19, 20 and 21 are in fabrication.  22, 23 and 24 have been lofted.  After installing the last full frame - number 29 -  the keelson and aft deadwood assemblies will be completed to prepare for the half and cant frames.
