    Hello Everyone,
Here’s another update to the Triton, this time in the form of canons. Well yesterday I mentioned that I would go ahead and start working on adding the eyebolts to the carriage assembly. Not only did I add the eyebolts, I also added the breeching as well and went ahead and secured them to the bulkhead. I still need to work on the gun tackles but that is for another day.
    Cheers,
    Raymond

    Hello Everyone,
Sorry for the delay since my last post. I didn’t have a lathe in order to turn my canons and was contemplating how to go about making them. Well I happened to go to the thrift store here on Fort Huachuca, AZ and was able to buy a lathe for $75.00. The only problem was that it did not have a faceplate but she still purred like a kitten and decided to buy it anyway. I was able to get a faceplate for it at Wood Craft for $30.00 and now I have a complete lathe capable of turning the canons. The next step was to learn how to use it since I’ve never owned one and all I had was a concept of how it must be used. Well I decided to turn a canon at twice the size the plans called for in order to get comfortable with it and I’m happy to report that I was able to make my first canon. I also made the carriage for the canon and added all the eyebolts and rings for it.
Since I was feeling comfortable, I decided to go ahead and make the three canons at the correct scale for my Triton. I also made the carriages for my canons with the exception of adding the eyebolts which I will try to do tomorrow. I went ahead and emulated my mentor by painting my carriages red but leaving the quoins natural in order to have color contrast. I also made the gun deck stanchions and added them into place. The following photos will show you what she is looking like along with my first try at the canon.
    Cheers,
    Raymond

    Greetings to all,
The newest update to my Triton consists of planking around the gun ports both inboard and outboard (to include the outboards trim moldings). I’ve also completed the gun deck’s section of planking over the chain pump casing well, permanently attached both main topsail sheet bitts. I constructed the chain pump, one of the two hand pumps leading down the well, and installed the gun deck’s grating. I’ve also placed the first quarterdeck beam as a means of establishing how it is going to look once I get started on its.
Now here is my dilemma, in a couple of photos below you will see a couple of 7/8” barrels I purchased in Hobby Lobby. At this scale, the barrels will be equal to 42” in height which I believe are ideal size for the storage of the ships freshwater supply. My question is, did the Triton have platforms in its hold area? I ask because I believe that it will add for more details in the hold’s area and at the same time allow for the storage of barrels.

    Greetings to all,
Many thanks to all for your kind words. Please excuse me for not posting lately. I just feel as if I don’t have enough to post, then I should continue to work on my model until I do have enough. Now that being said, here it goes.
I last left off with just the lower deck planked, lower deck hanging knees, and ladder going into the lower hold complete. Since I’ve only been working small items at a time, I’ve managed to install the hold pillars, add the gun deck beams (which have been planked to include the waterway and spirketting). Added the gun deck hanging knees, coamings for the gun deck hatch and ladder way, and made the main topsail sheet bitts.
I plan to make the gun deck stanchions, quarterdeck clamps and beam, and start planking around the gun ports over the weekend. The following photos will show you what she is starting to look like.

    Greetings to all,
Well, where to begin. I know it’s been a while since my last post but I must confess that I’ve only been working on my model for one to two hours a day or at the very least every other day. Guess what, that adds up pretty quickly and before I knew it I was already getting started on the second deck. I am currently pulling a 24-hour shift at my job and after I got here, I realized that the gun deck I had already started stayed at the house and I was not able to get any more work on it. So I concentrated on finishing all of the ledges, add the louvers on the lower deck, plank the lower deck, install the hatch coaming, make and place the ladder to the lower  hold area (which I thought I needed hence its placement), add limber boards against the keelson, and finally finish the outboard planking. All of my planking received simulated tree nails by using an awl to mark the location and following up with a pencil. The following photos will show you where I am so far.
P.S. I forgot to mention that I've also added the hanging knees on the lower deck (Hooray).

    Greetings to all,
Well I said I would finish the lower deck by this week in order to get started on the gun deck but for some strange reason I find myself shying away from the hanging knees. I know that I have to get them done and incorporate them into my model. What I will do is follow Arthur’s suggestion and mount and secure my rotary tool onto a base frame and use it as a spindle sander to sand my hanging knees into shape. You may all wonder, “If Ray isn’t working on the hanging knees, then what in the heck is he doing?” Well I’m glad you asked. I am currently planking the port side of my model below the wales and she is starting to look rather sexy. The following pictures will show you what I’m talking about.

    Greetings to all,
Please excuse the fact that I have not posted anything new recently. The fact of the matter is that I’ve been pretty busy at work and other side projects. Speaking of side projects, a Buddy of mine wanted me to help him enclose the back porch of his house to which I was thinking of doing for free but he insisted that I charge him something for my work. What I then did was tell him that I was looking at Model Shipways New Bedford Whaleboat on eBay. If he truly wanted to pay me for my work then I’d take that as payment. So, I’ll give you a guess as to what my next future project is.
Well back to the subject at hand. I have only been working on the Triton at least an hour a day sometimes two. As per the general consensus, I decided to plank the port side of the Triton and have added the ceiling up to the lower deck beam clamps. I’ve also completed the lower portion of the well with shot locker. I’ll be honest with all of you, looking at it outside of the Triton, I can’t help but think it looks like an ice-machine found at any hotel. I also added the shot locker’s door and door entrance to the lower well. I also made the chain pump casings for the well and just dry fitted them inside the lower well to see how they look. Not too shabby if I do say so myself. I hope to finish the lower deck in order to commence work on the gun deck sometime this week.

    Hello to all,
I’ve made a little progress today on the Triton. I remade the keel, false keel, and keelson at the new correct scale and also made them longer to incorporate the additional three frames necessary to add the main mast. Upon completing the keel, I marked the areas that will receive the frames to ensure everything was on the up and up.
I decided to experiment making my first frame by following Gene’s explanation on the Eagle and it really seems straight forward. After cutting the 3/16 basswood to size, I marked my working sheet in order to get the correct angles needed to follow the frames contour. Once all the pieces were cut, I laid wax paper on my drawing and placed futtocks 1, 3, and the top timber followed by the floor timber and futtocks 2 and 4. After everything was glued and in place, I placed a board on top of the frame and a car jack to compress everything and hold it in place (please don’t judge me, that’s all I had on hand). I’ve decided that what I will do is cut patterns with correct angles of all futtocks from card stock and go to town and knock out the other 11 frames.

    Greetings to all,
I've just taken a preliminary look at the plans and if you've already done so than you know it is quite extensive. As I was mulling everything over, I noticed the cross section does not coincide with the full build version. I only mention this is because the first time I saw a cross section back in '86, I fell in love with the idea of either owning one or making one. One of the appeals that did it for me was the main mast, main top mast, and main topgallant mast along with their main yard, main topsail yard, main topgallant yard, and main royal yardnot to mention its standing rigging. As such, I've taken the liberty to tweak the cross section plans by first, renaming the frames and second, adding three more frames aft of of the current drawing.
Since I am going the route of adding the mast, I am forced to go down in scale and build it at 1:48 scale rather than the 1:24 I originally planned. Attached you will see the alteration to the plans I made so far and I would appreciate it if someone much more knowledgeable then me can tell me if I hit the nail on the head or totally missed the mark.
On a side note, does anyone know if there are detailed drawings for the masts? Anxiously awaiting any and all information regarding this request.

    Greetings to all,
I am currently requesting access to the rest of the pdf files for the H.M.S. Triton cross section. I realize that the plans are for 1:48 scale but I am choosing to go at it on a 1:24 scale. There are two reasons why I am choosing this scale; 1. at a larger scale I can add extra details to the model, 2. I have large mitts for the smaller details required for a build. Attached you will find the photos showing what I have thus far.

    Hola Mija,

It has been a while since last I looked into your progress and I must admit that your work looks excellent. I am also glad that you are feeling better enough to work a little bit on your Red Dragon. The extra details you are adding is really thought out and I can tell that you are enjoying your journey. I look forward to more of your progress and remember to take it easy and rest when your body tells you to.

    Greetings to all,
I’ve finally completed the standing and running rigging for my Triton. I added the truss pendant, nave line, and another pin rail on the QD rail and the top’s rail. I still have to dress up the lines a bit. I also have to add the other components together in order to say my build is complete. These items include, ballast, barrels, ½ boat, crates, spare timber, and lines. Upon completion of my Triton I’ll move ahead and construct a display case for it. The following photos will show you how she looks so far.

    Hola Maestro,
Your progress is looking amazing. A friend of mine has sent me frame drawings of the Essex and am planing to build a complete ship of her at 1:64. It is a little smaller than your Triton but I will use your log as a basis of building my Essex. Bueno mi amigo, I'll say good-bye for now.

Thank you, Ray, that was exactly what I needed to know.  I have been playing around with several different gauges of wire to make ringbolts and hooks for a 1:48 model I am building, and I felt that yours were fairly close to the right size for that scale.  Thanks again for your help.

    Thanks Bindy,
I hope everything is well with the family. I have truly enjoyed my experience with, and quite proud of, my Triton (especially after that slight misunderstanding at the very beginning). I am now scheduled to work on the "New Bedford Whaleboat" that a friend gave me due to the assistance I gave him with the enclosure of a porch.
I must confess one thing, I am still thinking of the Triton and I may/may not try a full build of her. Seeing that I will be stationed here for another three years I am seriously considering it.
Fair winds to you and yours,
    Ray

    Hi ray
Great work on your extended cross section.can't wait to get started on mine! How did you find working with basswood? Its readily available over here in the UK but I tend to find it quite "fluffy" .how do you keep a nice square and well defined edge? Do you scrape rather than sand?
    Cheers......mick

    Greetings to all,
Well like the old adage says, “All good things must come to an end”, I am here to report that after four fun months of working on my H.M.S. Triton, I have finally completed her. Today I have placed my Triton in her permanent home as the following pictures will show. Please enjoy (as much as I do) and I sincerely hope that a few of my fellow model ship builders will be able to take something away from my experience on my Triton.
I would like to thank everyone who has looked in on my progress and have given me words of encouragement and or likes and I would also like to thank the nay-sayers who have graciously kept their comments to themselves.

    Hola Daniel,
I do not see anything wrong with taking ideas from the Diana and trying to make "your Triton" look like her. I truly believe that as long as you are happy with your progress, then that is all that really matters. "Usted es el Capitan de su barco" you are the captain of your ship.

    Hi Ray

No worries, i really like my little Corsair, but I'm dividing my time between her and my President.  I'm in the stage of rigging her but unfortunately, i don't like rigging too much, i prefer building.

I didn't start a build log for the President since i was already this far in her building process, but perhaps i should start one, don't know.

Some pictures of her where i'm at the moment.
