Denis - thanks - kind of you to catch up as well as the good wishes.
Vivian - SO nice to have you stop by - welcome back - I'll go to your log and catch up.

So - as I have not quite learned "measure twice cut once"haha  - rebuilt the upper deck, learned more about proper plank spacing so all in all a good mistake to learn from.

Hesitant to drill holes for deck treenails - mistakes would be visually a real mess. need to ponder that one. I know that some ships did not have treenailed upper decks - need to go to my books, and Google University ---
Next will be adding two carriages/guns to upper gundeck - adding last set of lanterns, and gun door ropes to underside of upper deck. As always thanks so much for your visits.

    Cheers,

Well, as people asked, here are some pictures from my marriage. In the first one me and my wife with my dad, and the second one at the celebration: cake time!

And some pictures on my progression. I searched for better sail pictures before sewing mine and found the gains on sewing them in stripes weren't that big. Don't know If I could do better, but think they are fine. I have some papers on junk sails rigging and will try to use them when the time comes - hope next weekend.

    Good morning.
I use a lot to remove the tail, these circular brushes from Dremel. When two hours have passed after having glued. There are corners where it does not arrive and you have to take it into account so that it does not overflow in those places.
It is necessary to put the machine at the lowest possible speed so as not to burn the nylon of the brush.

Unbelievable precision and neatness of work. My deep admiration to your workmanship, dear Amalio. I enjoy watching these ultra realistic wooden models.

Time for an update on Licorne.  "Yippee!" he says.

The longboat has been planked and removed from the building jig.  Overall, I pretty happy with it.  It's not perfect but can be fixed.  Worst case is bin it and the next one will be better but for now, I'm going to attempt the "fixes".  I needs more sanding, perhaps a bit of filler.  I go with filler, I'll find some stain or paint to resemble the planking wood.  I need to finish cleaning it up inside and out, adding the rest of the internal ribs and the decking.  I'm not adding too much internal detail as this one is on the bottom of the stack of 3 ship's boats.  What's a bit scary is they get smaller...

Here's the photo's before and after removing it from the jig.  Yes, there's a bit of damage, but after finding the bits in the trash pile, it's been fixed.  The first three on "on jig" and the second three are after the jig has been removed.

    Happy new year everyone.

Spend some time in the shipyard, together with my son. He wanted to do some planking work on the ship.
Giving him some advice, he managed to finish a part of the planking of the fore castle:

A very small update for today. Started with the deck beams. Quite a lot of measuring, sanding and starting over again.
At the moment I'am quite pleased with the result.

Back again. My familiy granted a little time for modelling.
Started with the construction of the forecastle. I glued two temporary planks in place, that will be removed later.
After a lot of sanding and measuring over and over again, that's what I've achieved:

Finished planking of the main deck. Man, that was a tedious job to do.
I think I have to retire to catch up the speed of other builders here on MSW.

I hope i get the forecastle finished before begin of advent season.

Work keeps me quite busy, so only a little update today.

Finished the deck planking of the aft castle:

I've finished the second planking above the wales and glued the futtock riders. Not easy to make. I made them from swiss pear and remade it more than once. After staining, i'am quite pleased with the result:

    That's it for today.

Well, it had occurred to me that having that area open to the elements could get pretty bad at times. Rather like being in an open boat. One thing you might try is getting in touch with the people in Bristol England who operate the Matthew, a reconstruction of John Cabot's ship of 1497.

She is at least partly open in this region - maybe they can tell you what it's like under the aftercastle in bad weather.

By the way, the arched openings have removable shutters to close them in. Not a bad idea.

This is a little hard to answer. A lot of contemporary pictures of round ships of this period are shown from the stern so they don't show this detail. Of the ones that are seen from the bow, many pictures (and the Mataro model) just show this area open, presumably for easy access.

Others (not very many) show an arch similar to the one at the forecastle.

By 1520 this area seems to have been closed in with what might be an arched door leading within - but the carracks of this time were considerably larger.

I haven't seen the picture of the Spanish carrack you refer to, so I can't comment. Is it possible to post it?

being silent for a while, here's another view of the forecastle. Some further detailling and planking in progress. Installing the ropes for the anchors, the upper deck is ready for planking.

During the last month I've made a board for my chisels and improved my workshop a little. Thus making working easier, it also reduced the time for ship modelling.
