  1. Well it has been a while since I posted anything on the ships boat. I wish I could say that it was because I was to busy working on it to take the time, but I did not get back to it until yesterday. I started the planking, and I think it is going better than I expected. I found that my clamps do not seem to work well on this size. The Titebond sets quickly for wood glue, so I have just started holding the planks in place until it sets (about 10minutes). The first plank did not get as close to the stem as it should. I did not notice because the clamp hid it from me. I would like get the planks along the keel placed today. Is it easier to bend the plank and then shape it or shape and then bend? I would appreciate any critique and suggestions. Thanks for stopping by. Till next time, see Ya!
  2. Thanks, I may have to do that. I believe the softest pencil I have is an HB and that is what I started with. I use a H6 for marking wood for cutting. You have to have good lighting to see it.
  3. I have completed repainting the hull. I decided to go with pretty look, instead of authentic or real look. So I used semi gloss red and black paint for the hull. I figure the shiny paint will awe my audience and they won't notice any mistakes. The red paint is actually pretty thick. I used a black sharpie to mark the waterline. It took 3 coats to cover the marker. I will never us a sharpie again (fingers crossed, it usually takes a couple of times for me to learn from my mistakes). The black paint is a little thick as well. It was drying as fast as I put it on. I just looked over at my ship yard and spied the ceiling fan running on high. A little late I guess. Well I guess I can't put off working on the masts and rigging any longer. Till next time, see Ya!
  4. I am also building the ships boat as my first POF. I look forward to seeing how it goes.
  5. Henry, you got it correct. That was quicker than I expected. DFellingham, That was how I found it as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USRC_Ingham_%281832%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingham_incident http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texan_schooner_Independence Your turn Henry.
  6. I stumbled across this ship last week. It has a very eventful career over just a couple of years. I will accept any of the three names it sailed under. Extra bonus if you can identify the flag. There should be six gun ports.
  7. I have not made much progress of late. My shipyard in in my sun room and it is currently 52F. I need to re-paint the hull on the Atlantic which requires me to re-mark the waterline. The cradle that came with the kit is not stable enough to mark a straight line so I made one from some scrape plywood. No if it would warm up enough to work I will get it painted.
  8. Hi, I just found your build. I love the idea. It looks great. Can't wait to see the finished Ship/wagon.
  9. You are correct DFellingham. This is the HMS Campbeltown shortly after joining the Royal Navy. The Cambeltown was formerly the USS Buchanan. Here is the Wki article. "HMS Campbeltown was a "Town"-class destroyer of the Royal Navy during the Second World War. She was originally US destroyer USS Buchanan, and, like many other obsolescent U.S. Navy destroyers, she was transferred to the Royal Navy in 1940 as part of the Destroyers for Bases Agreement. Campbeltown became one of the most famous of these ships when she was used in the St. Nazaire Raid in 1942." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Campbeltown_%28I42%29 Here is a photo, I assume before she blew up. It is your turn DFellingham.
  10. OK here it is. This should be an easy one. It played a part in history.
  11. I have a chance to acquire an old Model Shipways USRC Robert B Taney. I was wondering how close the model is to the original ship? Would I be better off and going with the Amati Robert B Taney?
  12. It is the USS Independence 1814, 90 gun Ship of the line. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Independence_%281814%29
  13. I realize now my first guess was wrong. According to wikipedia I should have the sail plan in one of my books, but it is not there.
  14. OK I got it. But, I will let someone else take a turn.
  15. I am thinking it is Royal Navy 1820-1850 2nd Rate Ship of the line. Which one, I don't know. There were quite a few.
  16. DFellingham, you are correct. The USS Hayler (DD-997) was suppose to be a class of it's own, DDH-997 (helicopter destroyer). But the Navy could not get enough funding to build it as such so completed it as a Spruance class destroyer. By the time it was built they were out of parts so had to find them where they could. All of the spruance class destroyers had the SPS-40 Air Search Radar except for the Hayler, it had the SPS-49. It made it easy to find at the piers, when there could be several Spruance classes nested together. As far as that armored door, I remember having to do maintenance on it. We had to bring in riggers just to change the hinge pins. During heavy seas the door would be secured because it could crush someone if it closed unexpectedly. All of the other Spruances and Ticonderogas had a large aluminum door in that location. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Hayler_%28DD-997%29 DFellingham, you win. So what have you got?
  17. DFellingham, it is not the Oldendorf (DD-972). Titanic it was not the Kidd, the Kidd was the lead in it's on class. Here is the hint. When they were building this ship they ran out of Spruance Class parts, so they used parts from the Ticonderoga class and what could be salvaged to finish it. This included the Fresh water evaporators (Ticonderoga class - never had water hours in 5 years), HF Communications suit (from a decommissioned ship), Air Search Radar (Ticonderoga Class) and the huge Steel Armored door on the starboard side just aft of the break (Virginia Class Cruiser I believe). I never understood why put a steel armored door on an aluminum superstructure.
  18. Eamonn, It was not the Briscoe. You were on the right track with the Radar antenna. This ship was built with a different air search radar than all of the others. Note: The USS Radford (DD-968) was the one with the funny mast. The mast was added to the USS Radford in 1997 and used as a testing platform for new technology.
  19. Sorry Titanic, you got Destroyer correct, but not the name.
  20. Ok here it goes. The ship I decided on is one that I spent 5 years on and got to know very well. The ship class will be easy to get, but, you need to name the specific ship. This ship had many unique features that set it apart from other ships in the class. I made sure that all 3 of the pictures captured one of the most noticeable feature (that is, if you are a details oriented person).
  21. The gunboat Helga. Used against the insurgents in the 1916 Irish uprising. "26 April 1916: Field guns from Trinity College and the gunboat Helga on the River Liffey bombarded the Irish Citizen’s Army HQ at Liberty Hall and demolished it. Buildings in O’Connell St were also targeted and destroyed. The upper floor of the GPO was evacuated has the men there came under sustained attack from British snipers and guns." Link
