jablackwell reacted to _SalD_ in US Brig Syren by _SalD_ – FINISHED - 3/16" scale
Update on the planking. Starboard side is complete and only a few more planks to go on the port side. (Phew!! ) One thing I’ve discovered is that even the best laid plans can go awry. After carefully laying out the planking profile for the hull I’ve ended up using a few partial planks at the center of the hull. I didn’t bother shading the edges of the planks to simulate the caulking since the hull is going to be plated.
Starboard side, not sanded yet. Port side with a few planks left to go.
Bow
I’ve also started planking the counter. Planks around the tuck look a little ragged but they should clean up okay with the final sanding.
On a separate note, I’ve always had a hard time keeping a square edge on the little pieces of wood that I sand. To help me do a better job I made a little disc sander for my dremel flex-extension with some scrap pieces of wood. I made a holder that the end of the extension sits in and is clamped in place. For the disc I used a cap from a vitamin bottle and cut out round pieces of sandpaper, of different grit, held in place with double sided tape. Now I can sand the ends square or at an angle using different drafting triangles.

Yes, it is looking alright! - the thing is tiny tiny tiny.... I can't wait to get the blocks attached to the tiller and get it installed. Right now the tiller is drying from its staining and the eyebolts have been glued in place.

Worked on the hatches before heading off for a business trip. Such fun to get out to Seattle for a week! What a nice city and so much warmer than here in NH during the winter. While NH had -15F, Seattle was a balmy 50F with rain. Not bad at all.
So, the hatches are done, and then worked on the bell and binnacle installation. Today spent more time on the tiller and wheel assembly. Going slowly to get these little details right and to get as much detail as possible into each one. I am finding that I am doing ALL my work now with magnifying lenses in front of my face. Age? Or small scale ;-) I ain't tellin'.
Making the frame for the hatches: I find the little square to be an invaluable tool.
The two hatches in place complete with handles. I still have to add rings to the tops.
Binnacle in place behind the stern companionway. Adding the bell in this small scale was just awesome. A small piece of wire was used to hold the bell up. Two tiny holes were drilled into the top of the binnacle into which the wire was glued with cyanoacrylate.
Starting work on the tiller and the wheel assembly here. There is a lot of detail to add here: eyebolts, metal reinforcement strips and rope. I'm going to enjoy some Led Zeppelin and make this part last.

Skipping the anchors for now.
Working on the aft companionway.
Does anyone do this? I sign my name inside one of the structures and date it. It's not like anyone will ever see the inside of this companionway, but hey, I thought it was a cool idea.

The main and mizzen top masts are now in place, and have all their shrouds and ratlines added, phew, I am glad they are all finished and that I split it up this way, as it did make the ratlines a lot less tedious to tie,I will now most likely add as much of the standing rigging that I can before fitting the tagallants masts.
I have also included some photos of Diana with Pegasus and The lady Nelson.
Firstly a lower fold down table I used to bring the rigging to a better level to work at

Copper plating the hull.
Firstly I decided to go with the copper plates supplied with the kit although I much preferred the look of the ones used on Pegasus, the cost would have been over £100 to update them too much for me. I started from the edge of the keel and fixed a row of tiles left over from Pegasus on the edge, I then came down 3 Rows before running a gore line, I did it by eye and feel and looking back at Pegasus to get the same sort of effect, as there does not seem to be a definitive way of doing this. One advantage I have found with these plates are they fix very well, maybe it is the dimples on the fixing side holding the cyno better than a plain flat surface, they also cut well and dress down fairly easily with a file or sanding wheel, when you need to make up the triangular stealers.
First few tiles on
Gore line marked out
Gore line tiled
About a quarter done
First side nearly done

The second planking is completed sanded, filled, and sanded again and lastly finished off with wire wool, I have also lined the gun ports with lids, all the gun ports have been painted. One thing I did do was to add a 1mm strip to the bottom of the keel as to my eyes the distance between the planking and the keel bottom looked to narrow.

Stern post and stealers

First sanding
Filler aplied
Lined gun ports
Extra wood added to allow easier lining of bow gun port

Worked this weekend on the bowsprit and jibboom. The first time through with the bowsprit resulted in failure of symmetry. The second time through was just right. I put it in place for a gander at the overall scale (see below). There is something magical about the moment the bowsprit and boom are in place. It somehow completes things and makes it all the more ship-like to me. Now to work on the martingale. All of this is, of course, a diversion from the capstan installation. I wanted to get the bowsprit done so that I could properly make the samson post mortise for the bowsprit. Ahhh the tangled web we weave

Got the cap rail and pin rails completed yesterday - nothing beats a little free time to work on projects! Kick on the stereo and sit to some detailed work, and that equals an awesome afternoon. The results are here. I am pretty happy with the bow rail. The stern took a little effort as did those pin rails. I was lucky that none of them cracked with the extensive drilling (by hand).
I need to work on the channels now and then the chain plates. Anyone out there have a good method for this type of vessel (1860s whaler)? I would like to make chain plates to appear as they would to the best of my ability. Right now I am thinking about wire with soldering. Thoughts?

jablackwell got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Sultana by jablackwell – FINISHED - Model Shipways – Scale 1:64 - first ship build
The model is almost complete now. I have some finishing touches to add: some coils here and there and some black paint dabs to cover up some shiny glue spots. All in all, I am pretty happy with the whole thing with exception of the stern. That part kept me in trouble for most of the project, but I am very happy with wood filler and its ability to mask some pretty tremendous errors. The rigging was a lot easier than I had anticipated. I am still looking for a good pair of long reach tweezers with flat grabs which can get the threads from a distance. I have found that most tweezer makers have pointy tips and a very small region that will grab thread well. I am not even sure how to describe what I am looking for,,,,,
So, some images....
I want to thank all of you for helping out so much, some directly and some without even knowing it. Your posts and information shared on this site have been a real wealth of input and knowledge. It is greatly appreciated!
My next project is already on the bench: the Kate Cory brig. This is a little larger and more detailed. I am looking forward to the added detail work, and this time, a coppered hull. I will try to post more than I did with this model... now that I know this site exists! The Cory will be the last solid hull work for me. I am planning to go to plank builds next and want to get through a build of the Surprise. We'll see.

I've been working on the yards now, starting with the topsail foremast yard. The mini lathe was a real help in getting the shape quickly and evenly. Once the cleats were glued on and the blocks seized onto the tips, rigging the yard was a real challenge! A couple of hours later, the results are in. I am pretty happy about it overall. Now.... three more to go!

Taking the peaceful diversion into making the bowsprit. Got it painted nicely thanks to the masking properties of Tamya masking tape. Love that stuff.
