Hello.

This is the start of my Niagara rebuild

As some of you know I built the Niagara a few years ago. Unfortunately the finished model was badly

damaged in a house move.

So rather than repair I purchased a new kit in Dec 2011 and started again.

Progress has been slow for a number of reasons but I am pleased to be back in the Niagara Club :)

I will post pictures of progress to date over Easter.

Welcome back to the club Ken!  We look forward to seeing your build!  Sucks about the damage, but one good thing of starting a new one is that you have an opportunity to do it even better than before!  :)

Good to see you getting started again.

My kit arrives this morning and perhaps our construction will run parallel.

Hello.

I have taken a few pics of progress to date. The hull is nearly finished but I have

not done any sanding filling or touching up of the paintwork.

While I am working on the hull I have also started on the deck fittings

I am at the stage of assembling the deck fittings on the Niagara

The Companionway and Saloon Skylight etc.

What is the best way to make a neat job of fitting the black bars to the windows?

Thanks for your help

Thanks Patrick.

That is what I will do.

I think i will also paint them before I put the bars in so that I dont get buff paint all over the black bars.

I am also looking at using some A4 acetate sheet cut down to use as windows behind the bars

That sounds like an excellent plan with the acetate. Do you use annealed steel wire for materials? I remember David (Bahamas Diver) mentioning it a while ago and finally found it in a hardware store. I like working with it much more than the brass wire.

Hi Patrick.

I am sure you are right about the annealed steel wire.

But unless I have something suitable around the house i will use what comes with the kit

Then spray with an etch primer and then black matte paint

Fellow Niagara builders. :)

I am starting to asemble the capstan

The plan ( Detail 3D) shows a metal ring on the top

And 2 metal strips around the top.

Is the metal ring a supplied part , or how do you make it up ?

I am assuming you make up the metal strips around the top from supplied strip metal

Thanks for your help

Ken, I made the ring by making a hoop with the brass wire and soldering it closed. I then hammered it flat and blackened it. I don't recall seeing the other metal strips but can tell you for sure that I'm not worried about adding them at this point.

Posted

Ken,

I made the metal strip out of manila folder.  Using a compass I could get it perfectly round.  I then used a black permanent marker to color it black.  Finally, I put small drops of CA glue on the ring to look like the bolt heads and once dry used a marker to paint them black as well.  There is no metal ring supplied with the kit for this purpose.

BTW...in response to your question about the metal bars....You can purchase black annealed steel wire from Model Exp.  It is not expensive and solves the problem of trying to paint the bars.  I first painted the outside of the companionway and the insides of the windows, then drilled vertically down and dropped the wire into the holes.  once the top is put on the bars stay in place.

Ken,

I guess it's been a long time since I've lgged on, sorry to hear about the original model taking a beating during the move.  Perhaps you could changethe name to Lawrence and display it next to the Niagara?

Did you make it to lake Erie for the big bicentenial re-enactment of the battle of lake Erie?  The wife and I went up only to discover that it was on Labor Day and not on the actual aniversary which was a week later.  It was a nice drive anyway, I guess.  We were able to pick up a bicentenial flag at a local IGA so it wasn't a complete debacle :D

I sorta gave up on my Niagara build at about the rigging stage.  I bought a second kit for parts for a Newsboy of the same scale as Niagara.  I drew up the plans with BobCAD CAM, etc. and just finished the hull planking yesterday.  It might turn out okay.

The new ship looks awesome.  Good luck.

Hi Rshaw

Thank you for your kind words.

No I didn't make it to Lake Erie. It is a bit of a trek when

you live in Australia :)

But I did have a holiday Two weeks in France !!

While in Paris I visited the du Musee national de la Marine.

I will post some pictures that I took in the next week or so

So my Niagara has been going slowly what with work and holiday

I have build a number of the deck fittings and now need to sand and fill the hull

so that I can paint it and then fit the deck pieces

Hello Everyone

I am posting a quick photo to show I have been doing some

work on my Niagara :)

As you can see I have been putting off sanding and painting the hull

and working on the deck fittings

Now that it is warming up here I have no excuse not to get outside and finish up

sanding the hull

Ken

Ken- nice!  It's good to take a break from the hull and make some of the deck fittings.  Everything looks really good!  Now that your winter down under is setting in you should have lots of time to make awesome progress!  :)
