Le Renard by Tompslattery - FINISHED - Artesania Latina

Recommended Posts

Been quite slack lately, just got back into it.  This is where it's at.  Reasonably happy with how the paint came out, the masking tape lifted some off but thats probably because its been on there for months.  Hopefully will be able to touch it up so it looks ok.

Hi Tom - rather than hijack any more of Gafriggs build I'm happy to tell you how I've arranged various items here. I've fought with this kit for eight months now and have decided that I'll claim it as my "representation" of the original given that the plans really only follow the replica not the original.

Looking good so far.

I did this ship as a first try when I found myself in covid lock down by myself in April. Is this Artesania Latina? It seriously kept me from losing my mind during the 2 month lock down in which I not only finished it, I also built a case. I had a lot of time on my hands lol. I just joined and am looking for ideas for another ship. I will read thru your log and get caught up as to where you are at in your build in case you might have a question. Heres a pic of my ship I named Corona Bound

Like I said I had lots of time on my hands. I worked on it for an hour or two every couple hours. Being in lock down by myself with nothing else to do. Also I was thinking I would get called back to work and wouldn't finish it.

I lashed all mine. No wire twists used anywhere, I'm afraid I pretty well junked the whole AL rigging plans and used my copy of Petersson's Rigging fore and aft craft. In addition I hunted the net for photos of the current replica to check on how it has actually been rigged as the instructions are really a drastically cut down and basic "looks good" set up.

If you check my photo here https://modelshipworld.com/topic/24327-le-renard-by-gaffrig-artesania-latina-scale-150/page/3/

you should be able to see what I've done.

Thank you both. I think I’m going to with lashing the blocks. I did try to use the wire last night but it kept breaking. Also I’ve been blackening all shiny metal bits on the model, so shiny wire isn’t consistent with that.

I've been slack with updates.  All the mast and spars are shaped and painted, fore pin rail has been glued in place as has the boat davits, bitt heads and catheads.  The side pin rails and channels have been fabricated and painted and need to be glued into position.

I keep a small supply of .5, .6 & .7 mm drills. All cheap Chinese but for the amount of time I need them (and break them) they work fine. I see you've beefed up the davits etc. as well. Or were they supplied in the kit in that thickness? Making good progress now.

They were the dimensions specified in the kit plans.

Ok, was able to get a new 0.5mm bit( was a delay as Brisbane had 3 day Covid lockdown)  got 2 individual bits and another set of assorted sizes as they have a 2.5mm shank.  Discover when I sat down to do some work that my pin vise wont take a 0.5mm shank and then I promptly broke the bit with the 2.5mm shank🤬.  Need to get a pin vise that takes a smaller bit!

Glued the 2 channels on, starboard went smoothly port side not so much.  This is related to the broken drill bit.  I've left the glue to set and hoping for the best, but I foresee needing to redo the port side.

Put a coat of paint on the interior of the dinghy/open boat and on the my dodgy sleds for the carronades.

I usually temporarily fit the mast so that I can drop a couple of lines down to simulate shrouds, then I can line the chains and dead eyes up correctly. Also, for future reference fit the chains then add the reinforcing strips, it does save these problems.

Attack of the dodgy instructions again. In the process of attaching all the blocks to the spars and it appears that the top gallant yard is suspended by magic. From my limited research I think there should be a pair of lift blocks at the end of the yard as well as a pair of brace blocks at the ends and possibly a halyard in the centre. If I add these I’m not sure where the  lines would run or where they’d be belayed.
